V W, R L and S SH Pronunciation Practice with English Tongue Twisters

  • 0:01 - 0:06
Hello everyone. Welcome to Simple English
Videos. I'm Vicki and I'm British.
  • 0:06 - 0:11
And I'm Jay and I'm American. And today
we've got some more English tongue twisters for you to try.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
Tongue twisters are short phrases that are
  • 0:20 - 0:25
    hard to pronounce.
We find them hard and we're English speakers.
  • 0:25 - 0:30
So they're really hard if you're learning
English, but great practice because they get
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    your mouth muscles moving.
We've got some learners helping us today.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    Let's see them in action.
    OK, here's the first one.
  • 0:39 - 0:49
Very well, very well, very well.
Very well, very well, very well, very well.
  • 0:49 - 0:55
He had to think really hard there.
Yeah, he did well because he comes from Finland.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
In Finnish, w is pronounced a bit like an
    English v sound.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
So this is really hard for him.
Yeah, and there are other languages where
  • 1:05 - 1:10
    v sounds like f. fff.
So this tongue twister is good practice?
  • 1:10 - 1:17
Yes, and it's good for everyone if you want
to pronounce clearly. Actors do exercises
  • 1:17 - 1:23
like this before they go on stage.
It improves their diction - how clearly they
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    say things.
    Exactly.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
You need to start slowly and then gradually
    speed up.
  • 1:29 - 1:39
For v, you want your top teeth to touch your
bottom lip but keep your lips relaxed. V – v
  • 1:39 - 1:44
    – you should feel a little vibration there.
    V. What about w?
  • 1:44 - 1:51
At the start of making the w sound, you need
to make your lips round and a little hard.
  • 1:51 - 1:58
Like you're going to kiss someone.
    Yeah. W is a short sound. W w
  • 1:58 - 2:07
    V. W. V. W. Very well. Very well.
If you look in a mirror, you should see your
  • 2:07 - 2:12
lips go round at the start of ‘well'.
    Well.
  • 2:12 - 2:17
Try saying it with our learners.
Very well, very well, very well.
  • 2:17 - 2:24
Very well, very well, very well.
Very well, very well, very well, very well.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
They said it very well! OK. What's the next
    one?
  • 2:28 - 2:33
    Red lorry, yellow lorry.
Lorry. That's a British word. We say truck
  • 2:33 - 2:39
    in American English.
Red lorry, yellow lorry. Red lorry, yellow
  • 2:39 - 2:45
    lorry.
    Red lorry, yellow lorry.
  • 2:45 - 2:52
Red lorry, yellow lorry. Red lorry, yellow
    lorry. Red lorry, yellow lorry.
  • 2:52 - 2:58
    It's not easy.
Yeah. It's good practice for l and r sounds.
  • 2:58 - 3:04
    l - yellow, l - yellow.
With l the tongue touches the top of your
  • 3:04 - 3:10
mouth just behind your top teeth.
    And with R it doesn't touch. r – red,
  • 3:10 - 3:15
    r – red
Yeah, the tongue doesn't touch. And your
  • 3:15 - 3:22
lips are a little rounded at the start. Red,
    red.
  • 3:22 - 3:28
    Say it with our learners.
Red lorry, yellow lorry. Red lorry, yellow
  • 3:28 - 3:33
    lorry. Red lorry, yellow lorry.
Red lorry, yellow lorry. Red lorry, yellow
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    lorry.
Red lorry, yellow lorry. Red lorry, yellow
  • 3:38 - 3:44
lorry. Whoo! That's a tongue twister. Yeah!
    It IS a tongue twister!
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    Yeah. It's hard.
I've got an easy way to say it in American
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    English.
    What's that?
  • 3:50 - 3:53
Red truck, yellow truck, red truck, yellow
    truck.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    That's cheating. OK, last one.
    What is it?
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    It's a very famous tongue twister. Let's
    hear it.
  • 4:00 - 4:09
Sally sells sea shells by the seashore. Sally
sells sea shells by the sea shore. Sally sells
  • 4:09 - 4:16
    sea shells by the seashore.
Sally sells sea shells by the seashore. Sally
  • 4:16 - 4:23
sells sea shells by the sea shore. Sally sells
    sea shells by the seashore.
  • 4:23 - 4:30
So Sally is a girl's name and the shore
is the land along the edge of the sea or ocean.
  • 4:30 - 4:35
It's where the land meets the water. I think
we say the word shore a little differently
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    in American and British.
    Shore
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Shore
    Shore.
  • 4:40 - 4:48
I pronounce the r more strongly. Shore.
And in American English you talk about going
  • 4:48 - 4:53
to the shore for a vacation.
Yeah, and what do you say?
  • 4:53 - 4:57
In British English we talk about going to
    the seaside for a holiday.
  • 4:57 - 5:03
Let's hear you say the tongue twister.
    Sally sells sea shells.
  • 5:03 - 5:09
    Sally sells sea shells.
You've got to move quickly between sh and
  • 5:09 - 5:15
s for this one. S – your tongue is forward,
and then you pull it up and back a little
  • 5:15 - 5:21
    for sh.
    s sh s sh.
  • 5:21 - 5:29
Sally sells sea shells by the seashore.
Sally sells sea shells by the seashore. Sally
  • 5:29 - 5:37
sells sea shells by the sea shore. Sally sells
sea shells by the seashore. Whoo! Brilliant.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
I think we need some music for this one. What
    do you think?
  • 5:39 - 5:43
Yeah, let's get some mood music. Sea shore
    music.
  • 5:43 - 6:03
OK. See if you can say this rhyhme with us.
She sells sea shells on the sea shore,
  • 6:03 - 6:09
and the shells she sells are sea shells, I'm
    sure.
  • 6:09 - 6:21
For if she sells sea shells on the sea shore.
Then I'm sure she sells sea shore shells.
  • 6:21 - 6:26
OK, that was pretty easy, I think.
Do you think they say it faster?
  • 6:26 - 6:36
    Sure you can!
OK then. Let's try. Are you ready?
  • 6:36 - 6:43
She sells sea shells on the sea shore,
and the shells she sells are sea shells, I'm
  • 6:43 - 6:47
    sure.
For if she sells sea shells on the sea shore.
  • 6:47 - 6:58
Then I'm sure she sells sea shore shells.
Could you keep up with us? You can play it
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    again if it was hard.
We need to say a big thank you to all the
  • 7:02 - 7:08
learners who appeared in this video.

Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore.
