Gay is OK | Sianna Kazarnowicz | TEDxPascoCountySchools

  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Picture this:
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    You're out in a public place;
    let's say, the mall.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
You see two men walk past you
    holding hands.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
You look around and you see people
    scowling at these men,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    pointing and whispering harshly.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
So you ask someone next to you
    why they're scowling.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    And they reply,
"Those two guys are gay. Ew."
  • 0:32 - 0:34
Situations like this happen way too often.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    Homosexual marriage was recently
made legal in every state of America.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
But is it fully accepted by society?
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    No, it isn't.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
The fact is, it needs to be.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
Since I was five years old,
    I've had two moms.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
That's right. My parents are lesbians.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
Five years of being happily married.
Eight years of being happily together.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
To some, this fact may seem cute.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    But to others, it's disgusting.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    My own mother said
she can't even go out in public
  • 1:03 - 1:06
and hold hands with her wife without
    getting dirty looks from strangers.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    Sad, isn't it?
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    In an article titled
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    "Most Say Homosexuality
    Should Be Accepted by Society"
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    by pewresearch.org,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
it says that as of 2011,
  • 1:16 - 1:22
    58% of Americans supported homosexuality,
    45% supported same sex marriage,
  • 1:23 - 1:27
but only 14% said that children being
raised by same-sex parents is okay.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Seriously?
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    14% is not a lot.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
I'm even going to bring our Declaration
    of Independence into this.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
One famous line from the document is:
    "All men are created equal."
  • 1:39 - 1:44
And even today, in our modern society,
why does this not apply to gays?
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    And I'm not just speaking
    for gays and lesbians.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    I'm speaking for everyone
    who isn't hetero.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    Bisexuals, pansexuals, asexuals,
and transgenders all have a hard time
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    fitting into our society.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
And in my opinion, it just isn't right.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
No one should have to feel
so out of place and so hated
  • 2:07 - 2:09
just because of someone they love.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    Love is love.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
It shouldn't have to matter who it's with.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
And don't get me wrong, making same-sex
    marriage legal is really awesome.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    But, honestly, what's the point?
  • 2:20 - 2:23
What is the point, if gays and lesbians
are still afraid to get married
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    because they're terrified
    of their families disowning them,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    their churches shunning them,
and being shut out by society entirely?
  • 2:30 - 2:32
And, come on, what about the bullying?
  • 2:33 - 2:35
People use the word "gay" as an insult,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
like "oh man, that's so gay,"
  • 2:37 - 2:39
like it's the worst possible thing to be.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
So then that makes people who are actually
gay feel like who they are is wrong.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    Think about that. Seriously.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
Made fun of. Laughed at. Beat up.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
People even commit suicide over this.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    For what? Just because
    of someone they love?
  • 2:58 - 2:59
It sounds pretty dumb, doesn't it?
  • 3:01 - 3:03
People opposed to homosexuality often say,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
"Oh, God hates the gays because they're
all sinners and going to hell."
  • 3:06 - 3:09
I'm sorry but first of all,
    saying this is hypocritical
  • 3:09 - 3:13
because people who say this are also
sinning by hating on the gays.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
And second of all, please point out to me
where in the Bible it says this,
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    because it doesn't.
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    God doesn't hate anyone.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    Okay, now I need you
    to picture something else.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
Imagine if the situation was reversed.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
Imagine if we lived in a society
    where being homo is norm
  • 3:30 - 3:32
and being hetero is considered weird.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
And let's say that you're hetero.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    You have to sneak around
    with your boyfriend or girlfriend
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    because you're terrified
    of what others would think.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
Just because you're a boy in love
with a girl or a girl in love with a boy
  • 3:43 - 3:46
you're afraid that the homosexual society
    isn't going to accept you.
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    And how do you feel?
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Rejected? Unloved?
    Unimportant? Utterly useless?
  • 3:52 - 3:56
Well, guess what, this is how many
    homosexuals, bisexuals, pans,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
and transgenders feel every single day.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    But you know what?
  • 4:01 - 4:02
They don't have to feel this way.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
If we as a country can learn to accept
    people for who they are,
  • 4:06 - 4:10
no one would have to feel so rejected,
    unloved, unimportant, and useless.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
People can be loved by their families,
    joined by their churches,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    and accepted by society.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
We need to be happy for the gay community,
  • 4:17 - 4:20
happy for them, that they know
who they are and who they love,
  • 4:20 - 4:21
even if it is the same sex.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    Homosexuals are human beings,
    people just like everyone else,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
and don't need to be treated
    any differently.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    So remember to wear rainbows
    because Gay is OK.
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    Thank you. (Applause)
