The People Who Can Turn Streetlights OFF/ON Just by Walking by
-
0:00 - 0:01Hi, it's Mike Chen.
-
0:01 - 0:05Imagine this, on a fine evening, you’re
returning home after a long day’s work. -
0:05 - 0:09And as you stroll down the footpath of
the street a block away from your house, -
0:09 - 0:11no one else is around,
-
0:11 - 0:15and you only have the street lamps
illuminating your path towards home. -
0:15 - 0:18Oddly, the street lamp you just walked by
-
0:18 - 0:19suddenly switched off,
-
0:19 - 0:22only turning on again
once you’ve passed it. -
0:22 - 0:24Now being the level-headed person
that you are, -
0:24 - 0:27you probably shrug off what happened
as mere coincidence -
0:27 - 0:28and think nothing more of it.
-
0:28 - 0:31However, three days later, you passed the
same row of street lights, -
0:31 - 0:33and the phenomenon happens again.
-
0:33 - 0:35Which is even weirder
this time is that, -
0:35 - 0:37three successive lamps are affected,
-
0:37 - 0:40each one suddenly turning off
as you approach, -
0:40 - 0:42only to turn on again
as soon as you step away. -
0:42 - 0:43Now, what just happened?
-
0:43 - 0:46Was this another random coincidence
you should dismiss? -
0:46 - 0:49Or did you somehow influence
the street lights -
0:49 - 0:53with a hidden energy or power you didn’t know
you had, light man? -
0:53 - 0:56This phenomenon is something many people
have personally experienced -
0:56 - 0:58– or at the very least, witnessed
-
0:58 - 1:02– a streetlight suddenly turning off
as someone passes under it. -
1:02 - 1:04While some may think that
this is mere chance, -
1:04 - 1:08there are also others that suggest this
to be an unknown phenomenon -
1:08 - 1:11caused by a few individuals
who supposedly possess -
1:11 - 1:15an incomprehensible ability to
influence electrical devices. -
1:15 - 1:17This may sound crazy, but over the years,
-
1:17 - 1:19more and more people have
become more open -
1:19 - 1:23with sharing their unusual experiences
involving street lamps, -
1:23 - 1:28and this phenomenon came to be
known as “Street Light Interference” or SLI. -
1:28 - 1:30"So what is Street Light Interference"
-
1:30 - 1:32“Street Light Interference” is a term
-
1:32 - 1:35coined by paranormal scholar
and author Hilary Evans -
1:35 - 1:38to denote the claimed
ability of individuals -
1:38 - 1:41to turn street lights or outside
security building lights -
1:41 - 1:43on or off when passing near them.
-
1:43 - 1:45Experience of this nature
are quite common, -
1:45 - 1:48with many people all over
the world claiming that -
1:48 - 1:51they involuntarily and
usually spontaneously -
1:51 - 1:52cause street lamps to go out.
-
1:52 - 1:55And typically, “the effect is intermittent,
infrequent -
1:55 - 1:59and is without an immediately discernable
sequence of cause and effect.” -
1:59 - 2:02Although there are many personal
anecdotes involving SLI experiences, -
2:02 - 2:07the circumstances of each case are not always
the same as with other instances. -
2:07 - 2:09Some people report that they
have only encountered -
2:09 - 2:11switching off a single street
light close by, -
2:11 - 2:13while others claim to
have influenced -
2:13 - 2:16as many as a row of street lights
in a single instance. -
2:16 - 2:19There also those who say
they possess the capacity -
2:19 - 2:21to randomly affect only
specific street lights, -
2:21 - 2:25which makes it difficult to discern a testable
pattern in studying SLI. -
2:25 - 2:29Moreover, though the majority
of SLI cases happen while walking, -
2:29 - 2:31others say the phenomenon
also occurs for them -
2:31 - 2:34while they ride on bicycles,
motorbikes, or even the bus. -
2:34 - 2:38And, the SLI phenomenon
is not limited to street lights alone. -
2:38 - 2:40There are also reports of people
-
2:40 - 2:43who supposedly can spontaneously
and intermittently -
2:43 - 2:45affect other electronic devices,
-
2:45 - 2:47which varies from battery-operated
wrist watches -
2:47 - 2:51to railroad crossing to aircraft
navigation equipment. -
2:51 - 2:56Some people also claim to affect volume levels
on TVs, radios, and music players, -
2:56 - 2:59and cause credit cards and other
magnetically encoded cards -
2:59 - 3:02to get damaged and erased
while in their possession. -
3:02 - 3:05There are also those who often
experience problems with compasses, -
3:05 - 3:07causing them to stop or malfunction.
-
3:07 - 3:12People who supposedly experience
the SLI phenomenon are referred to as -
3:12 - 3:15get this, “Sliders.” "SLI-ders", "Sliders"
-
3:15 - 3:18Many "Sliders", I'm not talking about
the White Castle kind
(bánh mỳ kẹp thịt Slider White Castle ) -
3:18 - 3:21Many “SLIders” suffer from
a lack of validation -
3:21 - 3:24when it comes to their skeptical family
members and friends -
3:24 - 3:27unless the time comes that they witness the
repeated occurrences firsthand. -
3:27 - 3:30And without sufficient explanation for
the phenomenon they experience -
3:30 - 3:33and with no one to turn to confirm them,
-
3:33 - 3:36SLIders are mostly left to
their own devices in imagining -
3:36 - 3:39and speculating regarding the nature
of their supposed power -
3:39 - 3:42to influence street lamps
and other items and devices. -
3:42 - 3:43Now in a modern world,
-
3:43 - 3:48where empirical research
decides the validity of a theory or a hypothesis, -
3:48 - 3:52any attempt in determining the main cause
of the Street Light Interference phenomenon -
3:52 - 3:54without thorough scientific investigation
-
3:54 - 3:56is dismissed as mere speculation
-
3:56 - 3:58and intensely rejected by
the academic community. -
3:58 - 4:02And this is where the problem
with studying SLI arises. -
4:02 - 4:05As with other reported psychic
or paranormal phenomena, -
4:05 - 4:08SLI is very difficult –
if not impossible -
4:08 - 4:09– to reproduce in
a laboratory setting. -
4:09 - 4:12Because they seem to occur spontaneously
and sporadically -
4:12 - 4:15without the deliberate intention
of the SLIder. -
4:15 - 4:18However, there are some informal tests
-
4:18 - 4:20that have been conducted involving
this phenomenon, -
4:20 - 4:23and some of the data gathered in researchs
and studies -
4:23 - 4:26are based heavily or solely
on the personal anecdotes -
4:26 - 4:28and subjective reports of the people
-
4:28 - 4:32who claim to have witnessed
or experienced SLI for themselves. -
4:32 - 4:35Even then, these tests and studies
have shown that SLIders -
4:35 - 4:39are usually unable to recreate
the SLI effect on demand. -
4:39 - 4:42And prior to his death in 2011,
-
4:42 - 4:46the British paranormal scholar Hilary Evans
was the foremost authority on SLI. -
4:46 - 4:49Aside from being a pictorial archivist
-
4:49 - 4:51and authoring numerous books,
-
4:51 - 4:56Evans also helped found the Association for the
Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena -
4:56 - 4:59or ASSAP in 1981.
-
4:59 - 5:02And after receiving numerous reports from
different people claiming that -
5:02 - 5:04street lights respond
to their presence , -
5:04 - 5:06Evans decided to uncover the truth
behind the mystery. -
5:06 - 5:09He collected hundreds of accounts
of SLI through his research -
5:09 - 5:12which he referred to as
Street Lamp Interference Data Exchange -
5:12 - 5:14or SLIDE.
-
5:14 - 5:16The culmination of this research
was the publication -
5:16 - 5:18of his final book titled,
-
5:18 - 5:21“SLIDERS: The Enigma Street Light Interference.”
-
5:21 - 5:22And here's some
of the explanations, -
5:22 - 5:23According to Evans,
-
5:23 - 5:26it is theoretically possible
that every person -
5:26 - 5:29who claims to have experienced
SLI could be lying. -
5:29 - 5:31However, since the majority
of SLIders really have -
5:31 - 5:35“no ostensible motivation apart from
a natural and commendable desire to resolve” -
5:35 - 5:39this mystery, we can probably set aside deliberate
deceit for the time being. -
5:39 - 5:41And so, based on various research,
-
5:41 - 5:44studies and assumptions from experts
that are supportive -
5:44 - 5:48or skeptical about the validity of the Street
Light Interference phenomenon, -
5:48 - 5:51possible explanations
for witness claims of SLI -
5:51 - 5:53can be grouped into
three broad categories - -
5:53 - 5:54psychological, paranormal, and mechanical.
-
5:54 - 5:59And the second logical explanation
in his book about Street Light Interference, -
5:59 - 6:02Evans raised this primary question:
-
6:02 - 6:03“does SLI occur at all, ”
-
6:03 - 6:07or are the alleged witnesses
deluding themselves? -
6:07 - 6:10According to Evans, a decisive
answer to this question -
6:10 - 6:13cannot be produced until the SLI phenomenon
is scientifically tested. -
6:13 - 6:15However, Evans also noted that
-
6:15 - 6:18SLI does not have the same
psychological pay-off -
6:18 - 6:21as maybe witchcraft
or alien abductions. -
6:21 - 6:25Because those who seek to enhance
their special gift of influencing street lamps -
6:25 - 6:29will not find much to flatter themselves
with achieving such a wondering feat. -
6:29 - 6:32In short, while its possibility cannot be
disregarded, -
6:32 - 6:34it seems highly unlikely that
-
6:34 - 6:36all SLI experiences are delusions.
-
6:36 - 6:38There are also those that suggest that
-
6:38 - 6:41the SLI phenomenon might be attributed to
-
6:41 - 6:44people’s tendency to see patterns
in “random noise.” -
6:44 - 6:48Because it is unusual for a light to turn
itself on or off when you walk past it, -
6:48 - 6:50it catches your attention.
-
6:50 - 6:52And when it occurs several
times consecutively, -
6:52 - 6:54people have the tendency
to think that -
6:54 - 6:57there is some kind of mechanism
at work that makes it possible. -
6:57 - 7:01And so, some argue that SLI can trace its
roots in the power of suggestion, -
7:01 - 7:04which requires a mix of
different factors to work. -
7:04 - 7:09As such, SLI could be brought about by the
normal behavior of bulbs getting older, -
7:09 - 7:10the witness’s observer bias,
-
7:10 - 7:14and some other important factor
that is unknown to the person -
7:14 - 7:16which would help in making sense
of the situation. -
7:16 - 7:19Now go onto the paranormal
phenomenon explanation, -
7:19 - 7:22Street Light Interference as a paranormal
phenomenon -
7:22 - 7:25is considered by skeptics to
be the least likely possibility. -
7:25 - 7:26Now, by “paranormal,”
-
7:26 - 7:30It doesn’t have to mean that a supernatural
force or an occult process is involved. -
7:30 - 7:33If SLI really does occur as SLIders claim,
-
7:33 - 7:35then this phenomenon cannot be confined
-
7:35 - 7:37in the parameters of conventional science.
-
7:37 - 7:40Until now, there is no scientific
recognition that -
7:40 - 7:44the human mind can cause physical
effects at a distance, -
7:44 - 7:46which is what SLIders allege
to be the case in SLI. -
7:46 - 7:50However, the problem with SLI
being a paranormal phenomenon -
7:50 - 7:54is that it will be difficult to conduct
experiments to test SLI -
7:54 - 7:56since the phenomenon happens
only at random -
7:56 - 7:59and it is not produced by the person
willing for it to happen. -
7:59 - 8:01There are also those
who believe that -
8:01 - 8:04what is causing street lamps
to turn off or on -
8:04 - 8:07could be some kind of “energy”
that is emitted by the human body. -
8:07 - 8:11SLIders report that the instances
they spontaneously influence street lamps -
8:11 - 8:15usually occur while they are
tired, stressed, furious, or sad. -
8:15 - 8:16Others, on the other hand,
-
8:16 - 8:19believe that street lamps are affected
by some kind of static electricity -
8:19 - 8:21that is produced by the body.
-
8:21 - 8:24There are also speculations that SLI might
have something to do -
8:24 - 8:26with the electrical impulses of the brain.
-
8:26 - 8:28At present, these electrical
impulses are known -
8:28 - 8:31only to have an effect within
the body of an individual, -
8:31 - 8:33but if it could be the unconventional
remote control -
8:33 - 8:37that turns street lights off and on
for these SLI eyewitnesses. -
8:37 - 8:39Now moving onto the mechanical effect.
-
8:39 - 8:40According to Evans,
-
8:40 - 8:44“The fact that a mechanical device
is involved logically suggests -
8:44 - 8:47that a mechanical explanation
should be looked for.” -
8:47 - 8:49This is precisely why some
skeptics suggest -
8:49 - 8:52that SLI occurs as a consequence of lights
-
8:52 - 8:53nearing the end
of their life. -
8:53 - 8:58Typical modern street lamps are
of the low-pressure sodium-vapor variety, -
8:58 - 9:00which emit red glow at start up
-
9:00 - 9:04and turn into a steady monochrome
yellow once they’re fully operating. -
9:04 - 9:07The lamps automatically switch on
at sundown -
9:07 - 9:11through the activation of a light-sensitive
cell or a photocell. -
9:11 - 9:12When sunlight returns at dawn,
-
9:12 - 9:15the photocell is triggered again,
switching the lamps off. -
9:15 - 9:17These bulbs take three to four minutes to
light up -
9:17 - 9:21and have a lifespan of 8,000 hours
or approximately two years. -
9:21 - 9:23When a bulb reaches
the end of its life, -
9:23 - 9:26it manifests a behavior that could explain
the SLI phenomenon. -
9:26 - 9:28This behavior is called “cycling,”
-
9:28 - 9:31which entails street lamps
turning on and off -
9:31 - 9:33every few minutes until the time comes
-
9:33 - 9:36that a technician comes
along to replace the bulb. -
9:36 - 9:40It is also possible that the bulb becomes
slightly dislodged from its socket. -
9:40 - 9:42If that is the case,
even a minor vibration -
9:42 - 9:45– such as that caused by a passing car,
bike, or person -
9:45 - 9:48– is enough to make the
lamp blink for a brief moment. -
9:48 - 9:51So in conclusion, the Street Light Interference
is a phenomenon -
9:51 - 9:55that remains to be a genuine
and fascinating mystery to those who believe it, -
9:55 - 9:59and to those who are open to reserve
judgement on it until such a time comes -
9:59 - 10:01that sufficient evidence is presented
-
10:01 - 10:03that completely disproves it
or verifies it. -
10:03 - 10:05Should it be proven true later on,
-
10:05 - 10:09SLI carries profound and exciting
implications for science -
10:09 - 10:12as well as for our knowledge
about human potential. -
10:12 - 10:13But speculations aside,
-
10:13 - 10:16we also must not lose sight
of the fact that -
10:16 - 10:18at least some, if not all,
incidents of SLI -
10:18 - 10:21can be attributed to
entirely mundane causes. -
10:21 - 10:23It could simply be
a natural event -
10:23 - 10:25that could be explained
by logical reasons, -
10:25 - 10:27but we are unable to conclude as such
-
10:27 - 10:30because of insufficiency
in tangible or verifiable evidence -
10:30 - 10:32and the influence of
psychological factors. -
10:32 - 10:37Although I don't really think people are
controlling the sreet lamps from turning on and off, -
10:37 - 10:39I'll be lying to say that
-
10:39 - 10:42thoughout my life, and it just has happened to me
while I walked by a streetlight -
10:42 - 10:44and it turned on or turned off.
-
10:44 - 10:48And I'll be lying if I told you guys that
I didn't think at that moment that -
10:48 - 10:50yeah, I had something to do with
that thing turning on or off. -
10:50 - 10:52But let me know your thoughts
on this entire phenomenon. -
10:52 - 10:54Do you believe SLI is real?
-
10:54 - 10:56Are you a SLIders?
-
10:56 - 10:57Do you like SLIders?
-
10:57 - 10:58Let me know in
the comment below. -
10:58 - 11:00Thank you all so much
for watching this video. -
11:00 - 11:01I'll see you later.
