Conservation | René Magritte. The False Mirror. 1928

  • 0:04 - 0:08
The false mirror presents us with its enourmous lashless eye
  • 0:08 - 0:15
Its iris is very impulssively filled with this luminous cloud swept blue sky
  • 0:15 - 0:24
and then right at that center is this matt black opaque disc that doubles as its pupil.
  • 0:24 - 0:30
Before cleaning, the pupil was very shiny and glassy and reflective.
  • 0:30 - 0:40
Once the varnish was removed the black became very soft and deep, so it really does become the focus of the painting.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
You can also see more details in the clouds and the sky.
  • 0:45 - 0:52
Also details like the highlights in the corner of the eye became much more apparent and visceral.
  • 0:52 - 0:58
The white that forms the highlight on the white of the eye is in sink,
  • 0:58 - 1:05
so it´s a cooler white than the white used in the clouds which are softer and warmer.
  • 1:05 -
And we can actually distiguish this in x-ray images that we have of the painting.
