What is Language?║Lindsay Does Languages Video

  • 0:00 - 0:05
Bad language, sign language, body language,
    animal language, French, academic language,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    colloquial language, Mongolian Russian, Elfish,
    Java...
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    What is language?
In this video, I don't want to bombard you
  • 0:11 - 0:15
with big fancy linguistic words or big names
    like:
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    Noam Chomsky
    David Crystal
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    Phonics
Instead I'm aiming to inspire a new interest
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    in language.
I'm aiming to inspire you to become interested
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    in language.
Language is the words we use, in English,
  • 0:28 - 0:35
French, German, Mandarin, Polish, or any other
of the 7000 or so variations of what we call
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    language. But is that it?
I love you. I love you. I love you. I love
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    you.
    Body language! Hello, old friend!
  • 0:42 - 0:47
What we do with our arms, legs, face when
we speak says a lot about what we really want
  • 0:47 - 0:53
    to say.
I love you. I love you. I love you. I love
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    you.
Little freaked out now? I'm sorry!
  • 0:55 - 1:00
See, the way I said 'I love you' changed your
opinion of what you thought I was really saying
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    right?
So language isn't just what we say, but how
  • 1:05 - 1:08
we say it. Or is that communication? Fine
    line.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
    Therefore, language is communication. Language
is a way we can communicate. Language is the
  • 1:13 - 1:17
very essence that makes us human and separates
    us from animals.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    Or is it?
Animals can talk to each other right? A growl,
  • 1:21 - 1:25
a hiss, a bark, a purr. With these tiny fragments
of sound we can sometimes tell how they're
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    feeling.
What's new, pussycat? Ok, calm down! I'm only
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    asking!
    .....(white noise)...
  • 1:32 - 1:35
And it's not just sounds that we make with
    our mouth.
  • 1:35 - 1:41
    I did it wrong!
    Yay! Sign language!
  • 1:41 - 1:52
    There are
  • 1:52 - 1:57
approximately 200 sign languages in the world,
so they definitely deserve a mention.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
And Braille. Even if you can't read words
in ink, you can read with your fingers, you
  • 2:01 - 2:05
can touch words. That is language. That is
    communication.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    But why does it matter?
    Why do we need language?
  • 2:09 - 2:16
Why do we need to communicate?
I can't do it! I feel like I'm having my passport
  • 2:16 - 2:23
photo taken. It's so unnatural, so unnatural!
I can't even raise an eyebrow because I'd
  • 2:23 - 2:28
be communicating with you a little bit.
We communicate naturally. To get stuff and
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    to give stuff.
And on top of that, we've created systems
  • 2:31 - 2:38
of words, sounds movements and alphabets to
communicate better, to express ourselves better:
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    language.
This allows us to be much smarter, more creative
  • 2:41 - 2:47
and more loving human beings with means to
express our discoveries and our art: via language.
  • 2:47 - 2:54
    So...what is language? Well, everything.
Thank you very much for watching! If you enjoyed
  • 2:54 - 2:57
this video then you should totally share it
with your friends. Communicate with them - use
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    language!
And if you want more, please subscribe to
  • 3:00 - 3:04
my channel where there's plenty more where
    that came from.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Adios!
    I'm sorry, I have a noisy tortoise.
