The Making Of Unorthodox | Netflix

  • Not Synced
    And action!
  • Not Synced
    It's huge.
  • Not Synced
    It's mind blowing.
  • Not Synced
I have to keep reminding myself
    that they're not real.
  • Not Synced
It's like a historical movie, actually,
    what we are doing here.
  • Not Synced
This is 90 percent of my filming
    experience, here?
  • Not Synced
    Is like this.
  • Not Synced
Come over here to do a show
    set in Williamsburg,
  • Not Synced
to do it in Berlin, it kind of,
you know, plays with my head.
  • Not Synced
A series in Yiddish, for me also,
    personally, I think it's a great thing.
  • Not Synced
Going to be dealing with a language
    that no one understands.
  • Not Synced
I mean, we're dealing with costumes
    and rituals no one understands.
  • Not Synced
But the essence of what's happening,
    that's universally understood.
  • Not Synced
This very beautiful and unique story
  • Not Synced
that shows kind of like, both worlds.
  • Not Synced
    I don't think it's a story about
the existence of God, or something.
  • Not Synced
    It's more about...the right to
    have your voice.
  • Not Synced
And people like me never really
    had that opportunity.
  • Not Synced
We never saw ourselves reflected back
    in the stories being told
  • Not Synced
    in popular culture.
  • Not Synced
    So we didn't really know
how to create our own stories.
  • Not Synced
I think this is the first show, ever,
    to accurately portray
  • Not Synced
    the Hasidic community.
  • Not Synced
These are real people, and their
    experiences are very universal,
  • Not Synced
    and very relatable.
  • Not Synced
    When the community watches it,
and there is somebody like me,
  • Not Synced
watches it, and sees, this girl
    lived exactly like she lives.
  • Not Synced
And, she was able to muster
the courage to follow her dreams.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe this girl can, too.
  • Not Synced
When I met Ann and Alexa,
and I became friends with them,
  • Not Synced
I realized, if anybody is ever going to
    really be able to grasp
  • Not Synced
    what the story is about,
  • Not Synced
and to really execute it in a way
  • Not Synced
that is going to have a
    positive cultural impact,
  • Not Synced
    it's these women.
  • Not Synced
    After I met Deborah,
    i read her book,
  • Not Synced
and I thought it was amazing.
  • Not Synced
I mean, I read it in one sitting.
    I couldn't put it down.
  • Not Synced
    And then, she said:
  • Not Synced
"Well, why don't you make my book
    into a TV show?"
  • Not Synced
Anna and I wanted to make a show
    for a while,
  • Not Synced
in which we could work through
    a lot of the topics
  • Not Synced
    we discuss a lot, especially
    about being Jewish in Germany.
  • Not Synced
To me, the story is about
    a young woman, who
  • Not Synced
    is searching for herself,
  • Not Synced
    and she is searching for
    her community in the world.
  • Not Synced
Esther is a 19 year old girl.
  • Not Synced
She was born and raised in
    Williamsburg, Brooklyn,
  • Not Synced
    in the community called Satmar.
  • Not Synced
    - Don't forget, Esty.
    He speaks first.
  • Not Synced
She grows up in a very
    religious neighborhood.
  • Not Synced
    And, frees herself from an
    unhappy arranged marriage,
  • Not Synced
    and flees to Berlin.
  • Not Synced
Her story is unique, and romantic.
  • Not Synced
We just felt it was so different,
    that somebody would leave
  • Not Synced
    this very insular community
    in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York,
  • Not Synced
    and find their way here,
    out of choice.
  • Not Synced
    From a very young age,
    she always felt very different.
  • Not Synced
    She's always been told
    that she is very different,
  • Not Synced
    because of the fact that
she always has questions within her,
  • Not Synced
    and she has that 'chutzpah,'
    you can say.
  • Not Synced
    The Satmar Jews are a
    Hasidic community,
  • Not Synced
    originally from the town of
    Sate Mar, in Hungary.
  • Not Synced
    They are mostly descendants
    of Holocaust survivors, and
  • Not Synced
    started by Holocaust survivors,
in New York, after the war.
  • Not Synced
    This kind of makes them
    a little bit different
  • Not Synced
    than a lot of other
    Hasidic communities,
  • Not Synced
    because they really developed
what they were about, after the war.
  • Not Synced
It is founded by people who are
struggling with the most immense trauma.
  • Not Synced
    For the first generation,
  • Not Synced
I would say even for the first
    two generations,
  • Not Synced
this trauma was a very driving force
  • Not Synced
    behind the ideological structures
    of this community.
  • Not Synced
The Satmar community is also special,
in that Yiddish is their native language.
  • Not Synced
I think they can be credited,
    to some degree,
  • Not Synced
    with keeping Yiddish alive.
  • Not Synced
    - But why Berlin?
    - Think about it.
  • Not Synced
    - What?
    - Her crazy mama lives in Berlin!
  • Not Synced
It was very important to us,
to make changes in the present-day story,
  • Not Synced
    from Deborah Feldman's real life.
  • Not Synced
Because she is a young woman,
    she is a public figure,
  • Not Synced
    she is a public intellectual,
    and we wanted Esther's
  • Not Synced
Berlin life to be very different
    from real Deborah's Berlin life.
  • Not Synced
So, in a sense, the flasbacks
    are based on the book,
  • Not Synced
    but the present-day story
    is entirely made up.
  • Not Synced
You have to go beyond cliché,
  • Not Synced
    beyond our projection
into what the life might be.
  • Not Synced
    in a community like this.
  • Not Synced
It was very important to us
to get not just the look and feel
  • Not Synced
    and costumes, and rituals,
    and everything correct, but
  • Not Synced
    to inhabit the ideas of
    these characters' worlds,
  • Not Synced
in a way that felt authentic,
  • Not Synced
    but also heightened,
    because it's television.
  • Not Synced
I just, in general, feel like,
    when you're showing
  • Not Synced
    different communities,
    especially communities on the margins,
  • Not Synced
you want to get the details right.
  • Not Synced
We knew it was so important
    to get people on board,
  • Not Synced
not just as actors, but behind
and in front of the camera,
  • Not Synced
    who are from this community.
  • Not Synced
So one of the first people we hired
    was Eli Rosen,
  • Not Synced
    who is an actor, translator,
    and kind of specialist,
  • Not Synced
    when it comes to Yiddish.
  • Not Synced
Eli Rosen was like our guide.
  • Not Synced
    He was our spirit guide.
  • Not Synced
He not only translated the scripts,
  • Not Synced
he coached the actors in Yiddish,
  • Not Synced
he helped us with all the
    cultural details,
  • Not Synced
    and he played the rabbi.
  • Not Synced
When I was given the opportunity
    to help ensure
  • Not Synced
    that it was representative,
    and that it is authentic,
  • Not Synced
    um...I, uh...
  • Not Synced
    jumped at it.
  • Not Synced
    Directing the scenes
    which are set within or
  • Not Synced
    in the ultra-Orthodox world,
  • Not Synced
    I would have been lost,
    without this advice.
  • Not Synced
    We had two research trips
    to New York,
  • Not Synced
    with our entire team,
to not just watch and look,
  • Not Synced
    and touch everything we saw,
    but we got access
  • Not Synced
    to meeting people who are
    still in this community.
  • Not Synced
    We really tried to offer
our heads of department, as much access.
  • Not Synced
    These trips, of course,
are like a hunt, for impressions,
  • Not Synced
    for feeling atmosphere,
  • Not Synced
    for just watching,
    for just taking things in.
  • Not Synced
    It was a kind of
    image-based research.
  • Not Synced
    We looked around.
    We took so many pictures.
  • Not Synced
And we tried to inhale this world
  • Not Synced
by the visual impressions we got.
  • Not Synced
While we were taken around New York,
  • Not Synced
we went on a tour of Williamsburg,
    by an ex-Satmar woman,
  • Not Synced
    who had grown up there,
she had her first child there,
  • Not Synced
and had been married, and everything.
  • Not Synced
    She walked us through
    a lot of Williamsburg,
  • Not Synced
and a lot of traditions within
    the exterior buildings.
  • Not Synced
Silke was taking lots of notes
    for her world,
  • Not Synced
and I was taking lots of notes
  • Not Synced
    for the characters
that I was going to be building.
  • Not Synced
    We started shooting the past,
    like the Williamsburg parts,
  • Not Synced
and then, we moved to Berlin.
  • Not Synced
    So, suddenly, something felt different.
  • Not Synced
Also, it's moving from Yiddish to English,
    and different outfits and makeup.
  • Not Synced
Suddenly, the hair -- and there was
    so many different hairs, right?
  • Not Synced
There is bald, and there is this,
and there is the wig, and --
  • Not Synced
    Esty has so many faces.
  • Not Synced
I had spoken to Deborah Feldman,
    before we started the project,
  • Not Synced
    about her personal experience
    of transitioning
  • Not Synced
    from Satmar modesty clothing,
    to Western clothing.
  • Not Synced
She said it took her a long time,
and it was a slow process,
  • Not Synced
    and she pushed herself
    to experience
  • Not Synced
    wearing T shirts,
    and showing her arm,
  • Not Synced
    and showing more flesh.
  • Not Synced
She said it did take a long time.
  • Not Synced
So, I wanted to show that.
  • Not Synced
I wanted to reflect Deborah's experience,
    with Esther.
  • Not Synced
It was so hard to create, in a way,
  • Not Synced
a production that is much like
    a period film,
  • Not Synced
that plays in the world of today.
  • Not Synced
To create the costumes for that
    was a very big challenge.
  • Not Synced
Much like the sets that played
    in two worlds,
  • Not Synced
    we had costumes that played
    in two worlds.
  • Not Synced
Plus, a character who has an arc,
  • Not Synced
    not just in her character,
but in her looks, and her clothes.
  • Not Synced
    Our production designer
    knew which exterior locations
  • Not Synced
we were going to be using there,
  • Not Synced
and built, made to measure, here,
  • Not Synced
    to sync with those exteriors.
  • Not Synced
    We have complicated locations,
    because we shot
  • Not Synced
most of the New York part,
    here in Berlin.
  • Not Synced
    - Why Germany?
  • Not Synced
The other movies that we did before,
  • Not Synced
we can [film] through the windows,
  • Not Synced
and now, we do everything inside.
  • Not Synced
So, maybe, this is a very first
    experience, for me. Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    Wolfgang is an incredible
    cinematographer.
  • Not Synced
He has shot some of the most
    incredible documentaries.
  • Not Synced
He is able to work with natural light.
  • Not Synced
He is able to work spontaneously.
  • Not Synced
We joke that he is like
    the hand held steadicam.
  • Not Synced
    He is good at combining
    different kinds of light,
  • Not Synced
    which, because we were matching
    set interiors with real exteriors,
  • Not Synced
    the lighting was very delicate,
  • Not Synced
    and Wolfgang was
    incredible at that.
  • Not Synced
    When I watch material
    in post production,
  • Not Synced
I think it is very difficult
  • Not Synced
    to see what was inside,
    and what was outside,
  • Not Synced
    what was in New York,
and what was shot in Berlin.
  • Not Synced
    - She's not here?
  • Not Synced
    Shira Haas is a talent.
    What a face.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, she only needs
to move a part of her face,
  • Not Synced
    and can make you cry,
    or laugh.
  • Not Synced
    Shira is just an
    enormous, enormous actress.
  • Not Synced
    So talented. So gifted.
    Such a hard worker.
  • Not Synced
    It was pure joy.
  • Not Synced
Every day, it was pure joy,
    to work with Shira.
  • Not Synced
I think that what is really
    beautiful in Esty,
  • Not Synced
    I think that she
    really really really,
  • Not Synced
even though she has been told
all her life that she is different,
  • Not Synced
    even though she feels like
    she is different,
  • Not Synced
she always tries very, very hard
    to fit in. Really.
  • Not Synced
And, she really wants to find
that feeling of belonging and happiness.
  • Not Synced
We have, sort of, four main characters.
  • Not Synced
I mean, Esther is the main character,
  • Not Synced
    but the other main characters
    are all Satmar characters,
  • Not Synced
    who are dealing with being
inside and outside at the same time.
  • Not Synced
The thing is, she was kicked out,
or left the community 15 years before.
  • Not Synced
It is that role, that attracted me,
    really, to the whole thing.
  • Not Synced
With Amit Rahav, we had never
seen him act in another project.
  • Not Synced
We just saw him in the audition.
  • Not Synced
We were all just blown away
    by him, as well.
  • Not Synced
He just kills it, in every scene.
    He is a natural talent.
  • Not Synced
I think that he is just
    very naive, and innocent.
  • Not Synced
    It's not weakness.
  • Not Synced
He has one truth, and this is
    the one truth he knows.
  • Not Synced
    - It's around here somewhere.
  • Not Synced
    - There it is!
  • Not Synced
    - In this section.
    Next to the fallen tree!
  • Not Synced
    With Jeff Wilbusch,
    a crazy thing happened.
  • Not Synced
    Our German casting director,
    said:
  • Not Synced
"Oh, we have this German actor,
    who speaks Yiddish."
  • Not Synced
It was the end of the day,
and Alexa and I were really tired,
  • Not Synced
and we were sitting here in the office.
  • Not Synced
    So, this guy comes in,
    and we were like:
  • Not Synced
"Yeah, so this is what the show
    is about," and everything.
  • Not Synced
    He was like:
    "This is my story."
  • Not Synced
    And we were like:
    "I'm sorry?"
  • Not Synced
    And he was like:
  • Not Synced
    "I am from the
    Satmar community.
  • Not Synced
    Yiddish is my native language.
    This is my story."
  • Not Synced
    I think Moishe is
    a tragic role.
  • Not Synced
He has a lot of issues.
  • Not Synced
    Personal issues,
    that he needs to fight.
  • Not Synced
    He is haunted.
  • Not Synced
And he is also a hunter.
  • Not Synced
    So, he comes to
    bring Esther back.
  • Not Synced
    - Say it. Where is Esty?
  • Not Synced
    - Where is Esty, telephone?
  • Not Synced
    - You're crazy, Yanky.
  • Not Synced
    For us, the challenges
    of creating this Satmar wedding,
  • Not Synced
    here in Berlin, began with
    finding enough extras,
  • Not Synced
    who had big enough beards,
  • Not Synced
    and were willing to get
    all the hair and makeup.
  • Not Synced
    The joke on this show
    is that the men required
  • Not Synced
    more hair and makeup
    than the women.
  • Not Synced
    - Mine is grown now.
I wasn't allowed to cut it.
  • Not Synced
    It's a very complex
    cultural ritual.
  • Not Synced
We wanted to get it right.
There are a lot of details.
  • Not Synced
    I'm just placing everybody in
sort of gender and age order,
  • Not Synced
    as well as imaginary relationship
    to the bride and groom.
  • Not Synced
    So, there is kind of
    a system to it.
  • Not Synced
    It's incredible pageantry.
  • Not Synced
It's a moment of great joy
    for the family.
  • Not Synced
    But, they don't necessarily
    express their joy,
  • Not Synced
    the way other communities
    express it.
  • Not Synced
    I paid for everything.
  • Not Synced
    So really, everything
    has to work out.
  • Not Synced
    I check everyone's behavior.
  • Not Synced
    I am having fun,
    but not too much.
  • Not Synced
It was very important for us,
  • Not Synced
    to strike the right tone
    with the wedding.
  • Not Synced
    Then, also, we had
    a hundred extras.
  • Not Synced
    Costumes.
  • Not Synced
    Well, the first challenge,
    and the biggest challenge,
  • Not Synced
    was to shoot it all
    within two days. [Laughs]
  • Not Synced
    For us, it was our
    big Hollywood moment.
  • Not Synced
    It was very hot
    when we were shooting.
  • Not Synced
    Unfortunately,
  • Not Synced
    for all of the extras,
    and actors,
  • Not Synced
    they were wearing
    a lot of costume,
  • Not Synced
    and makeup, and hair,
  • Not Synced
    in 100 degree Farhenheit
    weather.
  • Not Synced
    Every day on set,
    it's like this. Normal.
  • Not Synced
    - That's what I'm used to.
    - He's the king.
  • Not Synced
    It's hot in there.
  • Not Synced
    It's too hot. Please,
don't send me in there, again.
  • Not Synced
    We had an incredibly talented
    costume designer, Justine Seymour.
  • Not Synced
She has worked all over the world.
  • Not Synced
    She is incredibly flexible.
  • Not Synced
    It was challenging, because
    some of the actual clothing
  • Not Synced
is not for sale here, so some things
    were sourced in Williamsburg.
  • Not Synced
    They wear these furry hats
    called shtreimels.
  • Not Synced
    We couldn't afford them.
They cost more than 1000 Euro each.
  • Not Synced
    Each hat involves the fur
    of six minks,
  • Not Synced
    which seemed unnecessary to us.
We needed a lot of them.
  • Not Synced
So, a theater company in Hamburg
made them out of fake fur.
  • Not Synced
    So, no minks were harmed
in the making of this TV show.
  • Not Synced
    Right now, I am spraying
    and stroking the shtreimel,
  • Not Synced
in order to make the fur flat,
and look more realistic and shiny.
  • Not Synced
We have had to fit them,
    to make them work,
  • Not Synced
    for every individual actor, yes.
    Even all of the extras.
  • Not Synced
There is a tent, over there,
    full of shtreimels.
  • Not Synced
We call it our shtreimel tent.
  • Not Synced
Our head of hair and makeup
    department, Jens,
  • Not Synced
    managed to create our peyots,
in a way that I've never seen on screen.
  • Not Synced
    One hundred percent
    the best peyots I've seen.
  • Not Synced
    It's quite interesting.
  • Not Synced
    Yesterday, we were laughing
    very much.
  • Not Synced
When we had 150 Hasids outside,
it was a very funny picture.
  • Not Synced
    Someone was saying: "Look!
The Jews are back in Berlin."
  • Not Synced
    [Music.]
  • Not Synced
    We always talk about trying
    to portray reality in film.
  • Not Synced
    There is no more reality
    than diversity.
  • Not Synced
    That's -- just walk
    across the street.
  • Not Synced
    So, for Berlin,
    we really wanted
  • Not Synced
    to create a very colorful
    lightness,
  • Not Synced
    to the architecture we chose.
  • Not Synced
    We kind of returned to
    West Berlin.
  • Not Synced
Kind of little locations and areas,
    and certain type of architecture,
  • Not Synced
that, um, were built in the
    1970s and 1980s.
  • Not Synced
    I wanted to have something
    more with a freer space.
  • Not Synced
    More rhythm in it.
  • Not Synced
Silke found a most incredible location,
    right next to the Philharmonic.
  • Not Synced
No one had ever shot there, and
    it was the perfect location.
  • Not Synced
It was for the music academy,
it was built in the 1960s.
  • Not Synced
    It was supposed to be
    a much lighter, open architecture,
  • Not Synced
    post-war. It was about
    communication.
  • Not Synced
    It was about low hierarchy.
  • Not Synced
    Um, mirrored by architecture.
  • Not Synced
    We created our own
    music academy, where
  • Not Synced
    Jews and Muslims
