Stop Running | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • 0:10 - 0:11
The practice of stopping is very
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    crucial in
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    the Buddhist tradition.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    There are moments when
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    we don't do anything.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    We just sit there.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    But our body has
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    not stopped.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
It's a tension in our body.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    There
  • 0:36 - 0:38
is the kind of energy that push
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    you,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    push your body.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
Your body wants to do something,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    to be active, to
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    run, to do something.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
Your body does not have a capacity
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    to rest, to stop,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    that is why stopping
  • 1:01 - 1:03
does not mean just stopping the
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    mind,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    but stopping the body.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Because the body also has the habit
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    of running,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    of being in movement.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    And there is
  • 1:21 - 1:23
a feeling of restlessness in the
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    body.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
The body and the mind, they
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    inter-are.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    The body contains the mind,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
and the mind contains the body.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    They inter-contain each
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    other
  • 1:44 - 1:46
that is why helping the body to
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    stop, you can
  • 1:48 - 1:49
help the mind to stop also.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
And helping the mind to stop, you
  • 1:54 - 1:55
help the body to stop. You
  • 1:56 - 1:57
practice with body and mind at the
  • 1:57 - 1:59
same time, not just with the mind.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    That is why meditation includes
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    the body.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
You don't just meditate with your
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    mind.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    You meditate with your body.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
That is why it's good that we
  • 2:16 - 2:18
practice "I have arrived, I am
  • 2:18 - 2:20
home." I don't want to run anymore.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    And you enjoy doing nothing.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
Just feeling that you are home
  • 2:25 - 2:26
and you want to really rest.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
And you like to listen to the music
  • 2:32 - 2:34
of your breathing in and out.
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    Your heart is playing music.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    Your lungs are playing music.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
You just tune to that kind of
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    music.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    And whatever feelings and emotions
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    arise, you allow that music
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    of breathing
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    to embrace it.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    And the Buddhist term for
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    stopping is
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    Samatha.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
You are not searching for anything
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    at all.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
You are completely at ease in
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    the present moment and that
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    is the meaning of Samatha.
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    It sounds easy,
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    but we need some training.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
We need a strong will also, we
  • 3:31 - 3:32
need a big desire in order to be
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    able to stop,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    because the habit of running
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    is very strong in us,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
in our body, and in our mind.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
And the habit of running, the
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    habit energy might
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    have been transmitted by our
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    parents.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
Our parents might have run all
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    their life.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    And they may have inherited
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    that from our grandparents.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
But now we have a chance to
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    encounter Buddha Dharma.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
And the Buddha said, Stop, my child.
  • 4:20 - 4:21
And then you have a chance
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    to transform that habit energy.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    I have arrived,
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    I am home.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    It means I
  • 4:39 - 4:40
don't feel the need to run anymore.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
What I am looking for it is right
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    here, right now.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
And that is why we need the insight
  • 4:53 - 4:54
    in order to really stop.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    That is Vipassiana.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    Vipassiana is the practice of
  • 5:05 - 5:07
looking deeply in order to get the
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    insight.
  • 5:13 - 5:14
Samatha and Vipassana are the two
    wings of a bird.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
You are already what you want to
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    become,
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    namely a Buddha.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    You feel that there's no
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    longer any need to run.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    That is why the insight
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    allows you to really stop.
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    Without the insight, no
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    matter how hard you strive,
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    you cannot stop.
  • 5:48 - 5:49
    That is why Samatha
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    is not possible without Vipassana.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    And Vipassana is not possible
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    without Samatha.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
Imagine a bird flying only with
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    one wing.
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    It's very difficult.
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    You may have some wound
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    in our body.
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    We might have a cancer.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
We may have a wound in our soul,
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    in our consciousness.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    We may have some despair,
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    a lot of injustice,
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    a lot of anger.
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    You feel deeply wounded,
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    you want to heal.
  • 6:43 - 6:44
And healing is possible with the
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    practice of stopping.
  • 6:48 - 6:50
If you don't know how to stop
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    running, the healing cannot
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    take place.
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    That is why
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    the purpose of
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    Samatha is
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    help you to heal.
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    When you breathe in, you
  • 7:10 - 7:12
breathe in in such a way
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    that makes the healing possible.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    Because your inbreath is not
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    a fight,
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    an act of fighting. Your
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    inbreath
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    is an expression of arrival.
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    I have arrived.
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    I don't need to
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    run.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
And if your inbreath is like that,
  • 7:47 - 7:48
it has the power of healing.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
That is possible for us to live
  • 7:53 - 7:55
every moment of our daily life
  • 7:55 - 7:57
in such a way that every moment
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    becomes a moment of healing.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    When you make a step,
  • 8:02 - 8:03
make sure that the step has the
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    power of healing, relaxing.
  • 8:04 - 8:07
    When you breathe in,
  • 8:07 - 8:09
make sure that your inbreath has
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    the power of stopping,
  • 8:11 - 8:12
    of healing.
  • 8:15 - 8:16
And this is the voice of the Buddha,
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    directly to you
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    and from yourself.
