Basic Barré Chords #3of4 (Guitar Lesson CH-006) How to play A shapped barre chords
-
0:11 - 0:13Hello my friends.
-
0:13 - 0:15Hope this finds you well and happy.
-
0:15 - 0:19Welcome to Master Your Barre Chords Part 3,
-
0:19 - 0:22where we're going to be talking
about A shaped barre chords. -
0:23 - 0:26I'm a little gutted because
I just filmed four lessons -
0:26 - 0:29with my new little lapel microphone
to increase the sound quality, -
0:29 - 0:33and I forgot to turn it on, so now
I have to do them all again, don't you just love that? -
0:33 - 0:37Anyway, so, before we get into
doing these A shaped barre chords, -
0:38 - 0:43it's really important that you mastered properly
your E shaped barre chords. -
0:43 - 0:46The most important reason is the fact that
this muscle here, -
0:46 - 0:50in between your first finger and your thumb,
needs to get nice and strong. -
0:50 - 0:52So, make sure you do a little bit of work
-
0:52 - 0:56with some songs using those E shaped
and A shaped barre chords. -
0:56 - 1:02The other songs that I will have to do again now,
are Times Like These by Jack Johnson, -
1:02 - 1:05which uses E shape barre chords,
-
1:05 - 1:09as well as a really funky
rhythm guitar pattern with this click thing. -
1:09 - 1:11And also Day Tripper by The Beatles.
-
1:11 - 1:14I'll redo those lessons as soon as I can,
but I'm not sure if I'll have time -
1:14 - 1:15to do them in this session now.
-
1:16 - 1:20So, but I figured the A-shaped
barre chord is kind of more important. -
1:20 - 1:25So, let's get straight into checking out
our A shaped barre chords. -
1:26 - 1:29But you've either learnt to
play your A chord like this, -
1:29 - 1:31with all three fingers in a line like that,
-
1:31 - 1:34or the other method
that I talk about on my website, -
1:34 - 1:39where you'd swap 1st and 2nd finger
over, and get this little grouping here. -
1:39 - 1:41Either one of those is fine for playing the A chord.
-
1:41 - 1:44But neither of them work for a barre chord.
-
1:44 - 1:47Now in order to show you this,
I'm going to make sure that, -
1:47 - 1:51I'm going to use first this three in a line shape here.
-
1:51 - 1:55Now if we were to play a barre chord,
of course we can't use our first finger, -
1:55 - 1:57so we take first finger off.
-
1:57 - 2:00Second finger moves to where first finger was before,
-
2:00 - 2:02third finger moves over again,
-
2:02 - 2:04Little finger comes in to where the 3rd finger used to be.
-
2:04 - 2:08And there you can see, you have them in a line.
-
2:08 - 2:10This is quite a common way for me
to play A chord anyway, -
2:10 - 2:14because my fingers are a little bit too fat
to fit in the frets there properly. -
2:14 - 2:16So you might want to check this out as another
-
2:16 - 2:19alternative way of playing your
regular A chord as well. -
2:19 - 2:21Now when we go for a barre chord for that,
-
2:21 - 2:26of course the chord shape would then move up,
I'll just move it up one fret. -
2:26 - 2:28And then the 1st finger
would go down in a barre, -
2:28 - 2:32remembering that it's kind of slightly
on the side, which is ok. -
2:32 - 2:34. . .
-
2:34 - 2:35In fact it's good.
-
2:35 - 2:37Now the most important thing that you
can learn just from this so far, -
2:37 - 2:40now this isn't the way that
we're going to finish playing the barre chord, -
2:40 - 2:42so don't rush to learn this way just yet.
-
2:42 - 2:44But make sure that
the tip of your 1st finger here, -
2:44 - 2:46is muting that 6th string.
-
2:47 - 2:51It's really like, it's literally the strings
sitting on the tip of the finger. -
2:51 - 2:53So this finger's not
pressing down on the string, -
2:53 - 2:57it's just touching, it's almost like
pushing the string up just a little bit. -
2:57 - 2:59Just enough to make sure it's muted.
It's really important, -
2:59 - 3:03because the Root note
is the note here on the 5th string. -
3:03 - 3:05So it's really important that
we can hear this note, -
3:05 - 3:07that note has got to be one
of the clearest in the chord, -
3:07 - 3:12and also remember that wherever we put that note will become the name of our chord.
-
3:13 - 3:19So, now, to get
this chord shape down properly, -
3:19 - 3:23with these three fingers in a line like that
and have the barre going, is quite difficult. -
3:23 - 3:25Also, the barre has to remember,
-
3:25 - 3:28would have to touch, would play
that note there on the thinnest string as well. -
3:28 - 3:35So little finger would have to be nice
and round to keep the thinnest string clear. -
3:36 - 3:39Now, what's actually a lot more common
when we play this barre chord shape, -
3:39 - 3:41is to play it like this.
-
3:42 - 3:45This 2nd finger here,
I'm going to tuck it under there, -
3:45 - 3:47just to make it nice and clear
for you to see what I'm doing. -
3:47 - 3:49But of course normally when you're
playing it you would leave it out. -
3:49 - 3:51You wouldn't tuck it behind like this.
-
3:52 - 3:55So, the 1st finger is not going to change
from that other variation that we had, -
3:55 - 3:59which was, it's muting the 6th
string, it's playing firmly this note. -
3:59 - 4:02But what's different is now
we're using a 3rd finger barre, -
4:02 - 4:04and 1st finger doesn't
even actually have to barre. -
4:04 - 4:08Because with our 3rd finger we're
playing the note on the 4th string, -
4:08 - 4:11the note on the 3rd string,
the note on the 2nd string, -
4:11 - 4:14and then we're kind of lifting
our finger away from the fingerboard, -
4:14 - 4:17so that this top
string, the thinnest E string, -
4:17 - 4:21is actually muted again, so that
both the outside E strings are muted -
4:21 - 4:24for this type of barre chord shape.
-
4:24 - 4:26Very, very important.
-
4:26 - 4:31So, what's important, what's important?
There's lots of things that are important. -
4:31 - 4:34The way that you perform this barre,
is making sure that the, -
4:34 - 4:38first of all that the tip of the
3rd finger is not touching the 5th string. -
4:38 - 4:41So it's, if the 3rd finger is even
just slightly too high like that, -
4:41 - 4:44it'll end up muting the 5th string.
-
4:44 - 4:47And you want that note,
that's the most important one. -
4:47 - 4:49That's the Root note, so make sure
that the tip of that finger -
4:49 - 4:51is not touching the 5th string.
-
4:51 - 4:54Now, try and, when you're pressing the barre,
-
4:54 - 4:56just as I mentioned for the first finger before,
-
4:56 - 4:58try and imagine that your energy is pushing,
-
4:58 - 5:01energy, I'm sounding like a hippy again,
but watch how, the middle of, -
5:01 - 5:04the energy that
you're using to press this finger down, -
5:04 - 5:08is the centre of your finger, don't let
it be just the tip or the underneath. -
5:08 - 5:11But try and kind of
press it down from the middle, -
5:11 - 5:13almost like you're trying
to press the G string, -
5:13 - 5:15or the 3rd string
down harder than the others, -
5:15 - 5:17it's a really good way
to think of getting your, -
5:17 - 5:19that barre chord shape really solid.
-
5:19 - 5:25Now the other important part I need to
show you is the position of the 3rd finger. -
5:25 - 5:30OK here we are for our
new angle for the 3rd finger. -
5:30 - 5:32Now what I want you to
make sure that you're aware of, -
5:32 - 5:35is that, oh, if I can do this,
it is kind of weird. -
5:35 - 5:41This knuckle here, is further forward,
than this part of my finger. -
5:41 - 5:44So, it's kind of, it's moving away, like that,
-
5:44 - 5:48so when I'm pressing down,
I'm able to press from here, -
5:48 - 5:51down with that whole
section of my finger there. -
5:51 - 5:54If it's too flat, like this, like a
lot of people try and do it like this, -
5:54 - 5:56with their, you know I talked
about how bad it is before, -
5:56 - 5:58to have your wrist like this, but
if you try and play it like this, -
5:58 - 6:01with the 3rd finger here straight,
-
6:01 - 6:04you can't really press down properly in the middle.
-
6:04 - 6:08You'll end up either pressing all
of them, and getting a 6th chord, -
6:08 - 6:10which isn't what you want really.
-
6:10 - 6:13And, or, you'll just really damage your wrist,
-
6:13 - 6:15if I just, I might even be able to pan out here.
-
6:15 - 6:18If I, yay, look at this,
don't you love remote controls? -
6:18 - 6:21See, you can see how
badly positioned my wrist is there, -
6:21 - 6:25to have this huge big bend
there, is really gonna be uncomfortable, -
6:25 - 6:27and that's caused by
having my third finger straight, -
6:27 - 6:31whereas if I'd, if I do that,
I'll do that as a close-up if I can. -
6:31 - 6:34Yes, sneaking in,
look at this, I love technology. -
6:34 - 6:40If I bend my 3rd finger in like this,
now you can see that's correct, -
6:40 - 6:43and the angle, well it's still got an angle,
-
6:43 - 6:45but it's nowhere near as bad
as when it was like that. -
6:45 - 6:49So there is still a bit of an angle there,
but it's not terrible. -
6:49 - 6:52OK, so, oh, a little bit too close there.
-
6:52 - 6:55So, just really make sure then that this part of it,
-
6:55 - 6:58this knuckle is further forward
than that part of your hand. -
6:58 - 7:01So, and your pressing down that,
and also it's laying down, -
7:01 - 7:05and it's lifting up,
so I'm actually able to get this note here, -
7:05 - 7:07the 2nd string and mute the 1st string.
-
7:07 - 7:11So this note here is ringing,
and the thinnest string is not ringing. -
7:11 - 7:12It's really important.
-
7:12 - 7:17Make sure again you do
your strum, pick-out, and strum again. -
7:17 - 7:19Make sure that you got all those notes.
-
7:19 - 7:22And also check that the two outside strings
are muted as well. -
7:22 - 7:25To the Master Your Barre Chords Part 4,
-
7:25 - 7:28where we're going to look at the
variations of that barre chord shape. -
7:28 - 7:30Make sure you spend a little
bit of time with it again. -
7:30 - 7:33Try and get one chord shape down at a time,
-
7:33 - 7:34and be really happy with the way you play it.
-
7:34 - 7:36There's no point in knowing lots and lots of chords
-
7:36 - 7:38that you can't play and that you can't remember.
-
7:38 - 7:42So, it's definitely, definitely
worth writing these things down, -
7:42 - 7:44you know, print off some
chord paper from my website, -
7:44 - 7:47write down all the chords that you
know so you've created your own chord book. -
7:47 - 7:51So you've got a kind of a
collection of the things that you know. -
7:51 - 7:53The chords that you know in your head.
-
7:53 - 7:57You'll also find writing it down on
a page will help you remember each shape. -
7:57 - 8:01So, of course there's chords on my
website that you could choose to print out. -
8:01 - 8:03But I think writing them down yourself is also a good way
-
8:03 - 8:05of making sure that you remember them.
-
8:05 - 8:08So, before you move on to the next
one you want to make sure that you've got -
8:08 - 8:13all your E shape, your Major, min, min7
and 7 chords so they're all sounding cool. -
8:13 - 8:16And, excuse me, also the A shaped barre chords.
-
8:16 - 8:20Remember, of course, that this
is now a 5th string Root. -
8:20 - 8:23So, whereby we had a regular A chord,
-
8:23 - 8:26the chord I was just demonstrating
in that close-up was a Bb chord, -
8:26 - 8:27. . .
-
8:27 - 8:29cause I always had my 1st finger in the 1st fret,
-
8:29 - 8:35if I put my 1st finger in the
3rd fret, we've now got a C chord. -
8:35 - 8:38You hear it's quite similar, there's open chord C,
-
8:38 - 8:41barre chord C, pretty straight forward.
-
8:41 - 8:46C at the 3rd fret, D at the 5th fret,
-
8:48 - 8:51E at the 7th fret. That's the basic gist.
-
8:51 - 8:55You should hopefully have checked out
your Root notes for 5th and 6th string Root -
8:55 - 8:58in the Power Chords lesson.
If you didn't, you're very naughty -
8:58 - 9:00and you should go and revise
your Power Chords right now. -
9:01 - 9:06OK, I shall see you later on for Part 4,
when we check out the minors, -
9:06 - 9:10and the 7th shapes for
this 5th string Root barre chord. -
9:10 - 9:12Remember this is A shape,
because it's built around an A chord. -
9:12 - 9:14Take care and see you soon, bye bye.
