Self-Respect | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • 0:08 - 0:10
Whether you are accepted or not
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    that depends
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    entirely on you
  • 0:15 - 0:17
and not on the people around you.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    And therefore, the complex,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
the fear that not being accepted,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    to be rejected.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    It comes from you.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    Maybe you have
  • 0:32 - 0:34
the tendency to think that you are
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    a victim of rejection.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    Because you have been rejected
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    by your parents,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    by your brother.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    And now
  • 0:52 - 0:54
you are afraid that people will
  • 0:54 - 0:56
reject you, will not accept you.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
And you know that if you
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    reject yourself,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    if you don't accept yourself,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
how could other people accept you?
  • 1:10 - 1:12
So you have to learn how to accept
  • 1:12 - 1:14
yourself and not to reject yourself.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
And if you are able to accept
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    yourself, not to reject yourself
  • 1:20 - 1:22
then people around you will not
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    reject you, they will
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    accept you.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    To practice accepting yourself
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    is very important.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
You might have the idea that
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    you are not worth anything.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    You are only uncertainty.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    You are only
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    instability.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    You are only suffering.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    That is not true.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
In fact, you are not like that.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
You are more than your uncertainty.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
You are more than your suffering.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
And that is the statement made
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    by the Buddha.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
Everyone has the capacity of loving,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    of understanding,
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    of enlightenment.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
Are you capable of making one
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    step in mindfulness?
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Of course you are.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    And when you make one
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    stable step, mindful step
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    you know that
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    you have self-respect.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
Because a step made like that
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    can help you cultivate
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    stability.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    You are capable of mindful
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    breathing.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
You are capable of recognizing what
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    is beautiful, what is refreshing
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    and healing around you.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    And inside of you.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
You are capable of seeing that
  • 2:59 - 3:01
you have eyes in good condition.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
Eyes that can see a lot
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    of beauty in forms
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    and colors.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    You know that you have
  • 3:13 - 3:15
hands that can help a brother
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    or sister.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
And if you are aware that you can do
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    these things,
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    and of course you can,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    and then you
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    begin to accept yourself.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
You are a Buddha to become.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    You have the capacity
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    of understanding,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    accepting and loving.
