renton skating Plaza fun on the ice
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    magic in the air
  • 2:10 - 2:15
my first guess is elvin McDonald the
  • 2:13 - 2:18
director of friends of the des moines
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Botanical Center and he's here to talk
  • 2:18 - 2:21
to us about their plans for
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    redevelopment and some upcoming events
  • 2:21 - 2:27
Alvin welcome to city tom thank you
  • 2:24 - 2:30
let's begin by telling our viewers about
  • 2:27 - 2:32
the organization what is it and what's
  • 2:30 - 2:35
their mission well the friends raise
  • 2:32 - 2:37
money to support the botanical center
  • 2:35 - 2:39
and along the way we have a lot of fun
  • 2:37 - 2:41
we produce special events we help direct
  • 2:39 - 2:44
the content and provide some of the
  • 2:41 - 2:47
content for it and i would say remember
  • 2:44 - 2:49
our board is crazy about public gardens
  • 2:47 - 2:51
and what they mean to the community well
  • 2:49 - 2:53
we're fortunate in Des Moines we have
  • 2:51 - 2:57
some very beautiful public gardens you
  • 2:53 - 3:00
have a formal action plan or a plan for
  • 2:57 - 3:02
your redevelopment I'm interest to know
  • 3:00 - 3:06
what do you got to do hey well we
  • 3:02 - 3:07
celebrated 30 years last year and by the
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    time you're 30 years old if you're a
  • 3:07 - 3:12
    building you need some rehabilitation
  • 3:08 - 3:14
and we've always been bisected by Robert
  • 3:12 - 3:17
B ray drive which kind of kept us from
  • 3:14 - 3:19
embracing the river it's a fabulous site
  • 3:17 - 3:22
very few cities have 14 acres downtown
  • 3:19 - 3:25
to devote to such a thing so in this
  • 3:22 - 3:28
long-range plan we close ray to the
  • 3:25 - 3:31
north and we have a new ally of trees
  • 3:28 - 3:33
which is very inviting I provides new
  • 3:31 - 3:36
public spaces for gathering and 20 new
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    distinct Gardens like a children's
  • 3:36 - 3:40
garden which I see is having some
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    musical components there are outdoors
  • 3:40 - 3:43
isla phones there are kind of
  • 3:41 - 3:48
tic-tac-toe things that you jump on aim
  • 3:43 - 3:50
it you know I'm sure love it and so it's
  • 3:48 - 3:52
like a facelift but in a way a
  • 3:50 - 3:54
completion of what was begun when it
  • 3:52 - 3:55
when that dome was built in nineteen
  • 3:54 - 3:57
seventy-nine it was the hippest thing
  • 3:55 - 4:00
going there was one in Montreal one in
  • 3:57 - 4:02
Vancouver three in Milwaukee one in st.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
Louis of course the Des Moines parents
  • 4:02 - 4:08
wanted one but it tended to make us
  • 4:05 - 4:10
focus on dome and people began to say
  • 4:08 - 4:12
well I've been there I've done that so a
  • 4:10 - 4:14
couple of three years ago we open the
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    show house with ever-changing displays
  • 4:14 - 4:16
that the Polk County Master Gardeners
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    take care
  • 4:16 - 4:20
and that added to that and now we've
  • 4:18 - 4:22
added pictures and paintings in the
  • 4:20 - 4:24
north wing gallery that changed every
  • 4:22 - 4:27
two months another reason to visit more
  • 4:24 - 4:30
so actually the more you use it the more
  • 4:27 - 4:32
it becomes feasible to keep doing it so
  • 4:30 - 4:36
now if you're going to close Robert
  • 4:32 - 4:37
dhire because I see I can visualize it
  • 4:36 - 4:39
because it does kind of cut you off if
  • 4:37 - 4:42
you wanted to go down and then there's
  • 4:39 - 4:44
the Asian garden yes right there so what
  • 4:42 - 4:46
year are we talking about that this
  • 4:44 - 4:49
might occur right now we're in
  • 4:46 - 4:52
feasibility study stage and at the
  • 4:49 - 4:54
community leaders say yes we can raise
  • 4:52 - 4:56
10 million dollars and we move to that
  • 4:54 - 4:59
which would be this year next year and
  • 4:56 - 5:01
hoping for completion and 13 okay all
  • 4:59 - 5:04
right well tell us we know that there's
  • 5:01 - 5:06
been a lot of changes who owns the des
  • 5:04 - 5:09
moines Botanical Center well the city
  • 5:06 - 5:11
owns the property and they were having
  • 5:09 - 5:14
difficulty making it work and in 0 for
  • 5:11 - 5:17
the des moines water works stepped up
  • 5:14 - 5:19
and said we'd like to manage it so they
  • 5:17 - 5:22
are engaged to do that at least through
  • 5:19 - 5:26
12 and how does that impact Des Moines
  • 5:22 - 5:29
taxpayers well it was very good because
  • 5:26 - 5:31
the waterworks is taking on that
  • 5:29 - 5:34
responsibility and of course that my
  • 5:31 - 5:36
    organization the friends are the
  • 5:34 - 5:39
waterworks has a mission statement which
  • 5:36 - 5:41
the friends holy support likely raising
  • 5:39 - 5:43
the money to make it possible now other
  • 5:41 - 5:45
    friends managing the day-to-day the
  • 5:43 - 5:47
friends do not the management is under
  • 5:45 - 5:50
the governance of the waterworks and on
  • 5:47 - 5:53
goodrich a longtime employee is our
  • 5:50 - 5:56
facility manager okay all right I know
  • 5:53 - 5:57
that your hours have changed so why
  • 5:56 - 5:59
don't you share with us what are the new
  • 5:57 - 6:01
hours for visitors to determine we are
  • 5:59 - 6:04
open every day from nine to five except
  • 6:01 - 6:07
major holidays we found that even if we
  • 6:04 - 6:11
stayed open certain days the staff was
  • 6:07 - 6:14
left doing nothing so that's an i get we
  • 6:11 - 6:16
took away some of those and we added an
  • 6:14 - 6:20
hour every day which is a net gain of
  • 6:16 - 6:22
many days okay uh what can visitors see
  • 6:20 - 6:25
and do when they come to the botanic
  • 6:22 - 6:27
the center well when it's a cold outside
  • 6:25 - 6:30
it's one step to the tropics and that's
  • 6:27 - 6:32
probably draws us most in the winter but
  • 6:30 - 6:34
we have all these interior displays
  • 6:32 - 6:36
right now its color we have blue suede
  • 6:34 - 6:41
shoes in the center of the dome right
  • 6:36 - 6:43
now and it's really amusing and fun and
  • 6:41 - 6:45
of course if you come Sundays for one
  • 6:43 - 6:48
two three we have botanical blues it
  • 6:45 - 6:50
draws several hundred people of some
  • 6:48 - 6:54
beverages and snack foods are available
  • 6:50 - 6:57
our Riverwalk cafe is open every day
  • 6:54 - 7:01
except Sunday from 11 to two and it's
  • 6:57 - 7:02
best kept secret and deploy well I had
  • 7:01 - 7:04
lunch there a number of times and it's a
  • 7:02 - 7:06
wonderful getaway to just kind of
  • 7:04 - 7:08
decompress over the lunch hour I mean
  • 7:06 - 7:11
the greenery and the food it's a very
  • 7:08 - 7:13
nice environment I know for the month of
  • 7:11 - 7:15
februari that you have several events at
  • 7:13 - 7:18
the Botanical Center so let's kind of go
  • 7:15 - 7:21
down the list of what's happening there
  • 7:18 - 7:23
you have botanical blues as you were
  • 7:21 - 7:25
telling us about and that's on sundays
  • 7:23 - 7:28
from one to three sunday is a free event
  • 7:25 - 7:32
no that's admission or members are free
  • 7:28 - 7:33
of course always okay um you have
  • 7:32 - 7:35
something called learn on Saturday and
  • 7:33 - 7:37
    that's every Saturday morning I've
  • 7:35 - 7:39
talked at ten another at eleven and that
  • 7:37 - 7:42
cost is 54 members and 10 for
  • 7:39 - 7:44
non-members okay we can accommodate only
  • 7:42 - 7:46
60 people and we've been just about
  • 7:44 - 7:49
needing that every Saturday it's a great
  • 7:46 - 7:52
series we have lovely time excellent I
  • 7:49 - 7:55
call it church for gardeners that's a
  • 7:52 - 7:58
good way to put it uh it's februari and
  • 7:55 - 8:00
you have a Valentine's Day dinner we on
  • 7:58 - 8:02
the 13th and the 14th and those are my
  • 8:00 - 8:05
reservation and you can choose to dine
  • 8:02 - 8:06
in the dome in tropical splendor or in
  • 8:05 - 8:09
the show house in a more intimate
  • 8:06 - 8:11
setting it's really wonderful and that
  • 8:09 - 8:14
information is also available as you can
  • 8:11 - 8:16
see on the screen so those are the
  • 8:14 - 8:18
events that are scheduled for the month
  • 8:16 - 8:22
of februari are you planning events
  • 8:18 - 8:23
every month well all through March we
  • 8:22 - 8:25
have learned on Saturdays every Saturday
  • 8:23 - 8:27
and by the end of March everybody's
  • 8:25 - 8:30
dying to get in their own Gardens so we
  • 8:27 - 8:31
close that off let's talk a little bit
  • 8:30 - 8:33
more about the restaurant what is the
  • 8:31 - 8:35
name of the restaurant is called the
  • 8:33 - 8:38
riverwalk cafe and it's operated by gray
  • 8:35 - 8:41
midwestern catering and they do all the
  • 8:38 - 8:42
catering at the botanical center as you
  • 8:41 - 8:45
know we have a lot of meeting rooms we
  • 8:42 - 8:48
have lots of weddings and all kinds of
  • 8:45 - 8:50
events in these rooms well I know that
  • 8:48 - 8:54
those spaces are also available for
  • 8:50 - 8:56
rental so what type of rental facilities
  • 8:54 - 8:58
are available there and and is it just
  • 8:56 - 9:00
for weddings or is it for meetings what
  • 8:58 - 9:02
can we rent the space for we have major
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    business meetings there like workforce
  • 9:02 - 9:08
    has meetings there politicians have
  • 9:04 - 9:10
meetings there it all kind and we have a
  • 9:08 - 9:13
walsh meeting room as the smallest but
  • 9:10 - 9:16
in open willow we can accommodate 250
  • 9:13 - 9:19
people so and we have audio visual
  • 9:16 - 9:21
    equipment and the waterworks has
  • 9:19 - 9:23
rehabilitated those rooms I've added new
  • 9:21 - 9:25
carpeting new draperies it's a wonder
  • 9:23 - 9:28
and then I put this art and well I don't
  • 9:25 - 9:30
    supervise all these artists and
  • 9:28 - 9:32
    photographers every two months because
  • 9:30 - 9:35
when I first had an office back there I
  • 9:32 - 9:38
saw people like us coming out of serious
  • 9:35 - 9:40
PowerPoint meetings sort of blind at
  • 9:38 - 9:41
break time and I thought we have to get
  • 9:40 - 9:46
rid of the motel aren't we get around
  • 9:41 - 9:48
and put real art fresh art by mostly by
  • 9:46 - 9:50
local artists but well let's talk a
  • 9:48 - 9:53
little bit about the gardens and what
  • 9:50 - 9:55
you have plan under your redevelopment
  • 9:53 - 9:58
plan tell us first of all what's there
  • 9:55 - 10:00
now and and how that's going to change
  • 9:58 - 10:03
what is there now is gotten much better
  • 10:00 - 10:05
in the recent years partly because of
  • 10:03 - 10:06
    the waterworks gardeners they're all
  • 10:05 - 10:08
    graduate horticulturists there five of
  • 10:06 - 10:10
them they are wonderful they got the
  • 10:08 - 10:14
spirit and then we have a very vigorous
  • 10:10 - 10:16
volunteer team that helps them we have
  • 10:14 - 10:18
the largest collection of buck roses
  • 10:16 - 10:21
anywhere and those were created at I
  • 10:18 - 10:23
Shuba duck Griffith buck and he's gone
  • 10:21 - 10:26
but the roses live on in there a hearty
  • 10:23 - 10:28
did or any special care we have the
  • 10:26 - 10:31
largest collection of coleus on display
  • 10:28 - 10:35
in any public argument and we have
  • 10:31 - 10:37
really lots of roses and we the Iowa
  • 10:35 - 10:40
regional luli society has filled a whole
  • 10:37 - 10:42
bed with new lilies and day lilies and
  • 10:40 - 10:45
iris and we have a great community
  • 10:42 - 10:47
involvement there and much more goes on
  • 10:45 - 10:49
in the outdoor Gardens than people
  • 10:47 - 10:52
sometimes think because it is by
  • 10:49 - 10:55
sectored by the road yeah you have like
  • 10:52 - 10:57
you said some of the most unusual and
  • 10:55 - 10:58
beautiful plants do you still have the
  • 10:57 - 11:01
plant sale where we could take advantage
  • 10:58 - 11:02
of that yes the plant sale i think it's
  • 11:01 - 11:04
the first weekend in May and that's done
  • 11:02 - 11:07
by the volunteers and the master
  • 11:04 - 11:11
gardeners and it's a great place to pick
  • 11:07 - 11:14
up flowers vegetables herb plants is if
  • 11:11 - 11:17
you're a novice is there is there any
  • 11:14 - 11:19
component at the Botanical Center such
  • 11:17 - 11:22
as I am I love gardens but I I really
  • 11:19 - 11:23
have don't have a green thumb programs
  • 11:22 - 11:25
that I might be able to take advantage
  • 11:23 - 11:28
of to learn more well the learn on
  • 11:25 - 11:32
Saturdays programs are directly aimed at
  • 11:28 - 11:34
that but we have very friendly gardeners
  • 11:32 - 11:36
you we welcome questions and no matter
  • 11:34 - 11:40
how dumb they are we will act like
  • 11:36 - 11:41
you've never heard before and so I won't
  • 11:40 - 11:45
feel bad that I don't know this simple
  • 11:41 - 11:47
answer to question so when you expand
  • 11:45 - 11:50
across the road what what's going to
  • 11:47 - 11:52
change what would be different well it
  • 11:50 - 11:55
would be first place you have this grand
  • 11:52 - 11:57
la that people can walk down and there
  • 11:55 - 11:59
will be a tremendous fountain at the end
  • 11:57 - 12:02
of it will just draw you there so you
  • 11:59 - 12:04
know I want to go in oh I don't know
  • 12:02 - 12:08
what about to be here we begun and it'll
  • 12:04 - 12:10
be Chuck it will be gone and the bike
  • 12:08 - 12:12
trail will still continue right along
  • 12:10 - 12:14
the river and in the event of flooding
  • 12:12 - 12:19
we are prepared to open so that they
  • 12:14 - 12:22
will go down this la but I gotta go hey
  • 12:19 - 12:24
everybody's prepared for that so so
  • 12:22 - 12:28
there'll be a fountain and it just been
  • 12:24 - 12:31
many more places to be right now the the
  • 12:28 - 12:32
curving quality of the dome it you never
  • 12:31 - 12:35
have a sense of arrival you're just
  • 12:32 - 12:38
    confused it's endlessly confusing to
  • 12:35 - 12:42
some people but you add this rectilinear
  • 12:38 - 12:44
element and it sort of makes it all very

  • 19:27 - 19:31
    and that's your city update
  • 19:36 - 19:42
my next guest is Ryan Biffle marketing
  • 19:39 - 19:44
director for the blank Park Zoo welcome
  • 19:42 - 19:46
to city top all right thanks for having
  • 19:44 - 19:47
us well I'm always excited when you come
  • 19:46 - 19:49
because you bring little critters yeah
  • 19:47 - 19:52
but there's so many exciting things
  • 19:49 - 19:55
going on at the zoo with technology and
  • 19:52 - 19:58
a few other things but first let's talk
  • 19:55 - 20:01
about the zoo mobile what is that well
  • 19:58 - 20:02
the zoo mobile is a bright green Toyota
  • 20:01 - 20:04
Highlander and we got to thanks to the
  • 20:02 - 20:08
folks at Toyota for helping us out with
  • 20:04 - 20:11
the Highlander and like it goes out to
  • 20:08 - 20:13
all the schools library senior homes so
  • 20:11 - 20:16
you might see it around town and you can
  • 20:13 - 20:19
just still wave and honk at it and enjoy
  • 20:16 - 20:21
the new zoo mobile as so where is it
  • 20:19 - 20:23
going is this is this what you use for
  • 20:21 - 20:24
    your educational program yeah it's
  • 20:23 - 20:27
educational programs and we go all over
  • 20:24 - 20:29
the state of Iowa and we educate you
  • 20:27 - 20:32
know hundred thousand people outside the
  • 20:29 - 20:33
zoo every year with all these different
  • 20:32 - 20:35
programs when we take animals outside
  • 20:33 - 20:38
the zoo so a lot of people can't go to
  • 20:35 - 20:41
the zoo so we come to them all right
  • 20:38 - 20:43
behind the scenes tours what is that
  • 20:41 - 20:45
behind the scenes stirs well you heard
  • 20:43 - 20:47
about this baby giraffe we had last oh I
  • 20:45 - 20:49
did and unfortunately draft can't come
  • 20:47 - 20:52
outside with all the snow and ice on the
  • 20:49 - 20:53
ground so it's a way that people can go
  • 20:52 - 20:56
see the draft and it helps raise money
  • 20:53 - 20:58
for a non-profit zoo so for a hundred
  • 20:56 - 21:01
dollars you can go you take a draft or
  • 20:58 - 21:03
you and take a tiger tour you can take a
  • 21:01 - 21:04
sea lion tour but right now i recommend
  • 21:03 - 21:06
the draft or because you can see the
  • 21:04 - 21:07
baby and you go behind the scenes in the
  • 21:06 - 21:09
bar and see what they do in the
  • 21:07 - 21:12
wintertime and also feed a giraffe so
  • 21:09 - 21:13
it's a lot of fun how the baby out I
  • 21:12 - 21:17
can't remember when the baby was born
  • 21:13 - 21:19
but how big is it well it it grows
  • 21:17 - 21:22
quickly it's it started out about six
  • 21:19 - 21:24
feet 150 pounds okay it was born and it
  • 21:22 - 21:26
was six feet yeah yeah and within a
  • 21:24 - 21:30
month it had already gained 100 pounds
  • 21:26 - 21:32
so it's growing feet something like that
  • 21:30 - 21:38
hey and and of course its mother's milk
  • 21:32 - 21:42
so six feet tall at birth yep now that's
  • 21:38 - 21:44
a delivery for you okay um there is also
  • 21:42 - 21:46
webcams now and I know there's some
  • 21:44 - 21:48
other things going on on your on your
  • 21:46 - 21:51
    website lots of exciting thing
  • 21:48 - 21:53
yeah we have two webcams and my favorite
  • 21:51 - 21:54
is the monkey cam the snow monkey cam
  • 21:53 - 21:57
especially right now with snow on the
  • 21:54 - 22:00
ground because you can dial in it's a
  • 21:57 - 22:02
great time to waste time at work if you
  • 22:00 - 22:05
don't feel like working jump on the
  • 22:02 - 22:06
computer and we don't do yeah yeah
  • 22:05 - 22:08
you're not supposed to do that but you
  • 22:06 - 22:10
jump on the computer go to our website
  • 22:08 - 22:12
and you can just watch the snow monkeys
  • 22:10 - 22:15
play around also this is real time it's
  • 22:12 - 22:20
real time it's live it's it's on every
  • 22:15 - 22:22
day from about 10 30 to 4 30 well the
  • 22:20 - 22:25
website is blank Park Zoo com monkey
  • 22:22 - 22:27
camp you don't want to miss it in terms
  • 22:25 - 22:29
of Technology I know you have your
  • 22:27 - 22:31
website you have online and you're using
  • 22:29 - 22:33
social media so tell us how you using
  • 22:31 - 22:36
social media well social media is just
  • 22:33 - 22:39
an easy way for us to you know
  • 22:36 - 22:41
late-breaking news about the zoo and so
  • 22:39 - 22:43
you can go to our facebook page and
  • 22:41 - 22:46
become a fan of our facebook page we
  • 22:43 - 22:48
have 7,500 fans right now and so it's a
  • 22:46 - 22:51
great way to communicate real fast we
  • 22:48 - 22:52
also do contests and promotions you can
  • 22:51 - 22:54
find out things that we don't tell
  • 22:52 - 22:56
anybody else anywhere else on our
  • 22:54 - 22:58
    facebook site so that's facebook.com
  • 22:56 - 23:01
slash blank Park Zoo and you can come a
  • 22:58 - 23:03
fan and like us there well I know there
  • 23:01 - 23:05
are lots of things that go on at the zoo
  • 23:03 - 23:09
be on visiting the animals because you
  • 23:05 - 23:11
have the discovery center and some other
  • 23:09 - 23:13
facilities at the zoo tell us about that
  • 23:11 - 23:15
well you know the zoo's open all winter
  • 23:13 - 23:18
and one of the great facilities that
  • 23:15 - 23:21
opened up in 2001 is the Mayan and
  • 23:18 - 23:23
jackie blank Discovery Center and you
  • 23:21 - 23:25
can go in there and you can see you know
  • 23:23 - 23:28
there's like 20 different breeds of
  • 23:25 - 23:31
birds we have the very rare pink pigeon
  • 23:28 - 23:33
that that just had a baby chick so we
  • 23:31 - 23:35
had now have three pink pigeons flying
  • 23:33 - 23:37
around and there's only 250 of those
  • 23:35 - 23:40
birds in the entire world so we have
  • 23:37 - 23:43
three of them at the blank Park Zoo pink
  • 23:40 - 23:46
pigeons yes is that from Mauritius an
  • 23:43 - 23:50
island off the coast of Africa yeah okay
  • 23:46 - 23:52
uh well I know you have some animals
  • 23:50 - 23:53
that you've brought along yeah and so
  • 23:52 - 23:56
I'd like to bring on he always brings
  • 23:53 - 23:59
something that won't frighten me our
  • 23:56 - 24:01
first animal this is Hercules the
  • 23:59 - 24:04
    European ferret
  • 24:01 - 24:06
and we call him Hercules cuz he's like
  • 24:04 - 24:09
twice as big as our other ferrets he's
  • 24:06 - 24:11
not he's not he's not huge huge but he's
  • 24:09 - 24:13
pretty big hey he's a mouse good yeah
  • 24:11 - 24:15
and he just loves to play you know if I
  • 24:13 - 24:18
let him go he'd probably find a hole and
  • 24:15 - 24:19
curl up and you know what they can do
  • 24:18 - 24:22
their very flexible so they love they
  • 24:19 - 24:24
love d prairie dogs and so they need to
  • 24:22 - 24:25
pray yeah yeah they like to eat prairie
  • 24:24 - 24:27
dogs so what that what they do is they
  • 24:25 - 24:29
go down on the Prairie call and they go
  • 24:27 - 24:31
and they say oh no there's no prairie
  • 24:29 - 24:33
dog down there there's a snake and they
  • 24:31 - 24:37
can turn around and get out real easy
  • 24:33 - 24:38
i'm very flexible so that was part of
  • 24:37 - 24:42
the problem with like the american
  • 24:38 - 24:45
version of the ferret is when the
  • 24:42 - 24:47
prairie dogs all went away so did the
  • 24:45 - 24:53
    ferrets because they require prairie
  • 24:47 - 24:56
dogs in our diet and he's uh oh they
  • 24:53 - 24:59
also have a musk glands or like skunks
  • 24:56 - 25:03
and so if you did this fair it's been
  • 24:59 - 25:07
decided thank you yeah thank you but but
  • 25:03 - 25:10
you do sort of smell it still and um and
  • 25:07 - 25:12
yeah they have quite the smelt so what
  • 25:10 - 25:14
do you feed them if they're there no
  • 25:12 - 25:17
prayer they have a they have a pellet
  • 25:14 - 25:18
food that they eat at the zoo and so
  • 25:17 - 25:20
he's one of the animals that you take
  • 25:18 - 25:22
out in the yeah he's won it you won't
  • 25:20 - 25:25
see him if you come to the zoo most
  • 25:22 - 25:27
likely but he goes to all sorts of
  • 25:25 - 25:30
schools and entertains kids and teaches
  • 25:27 - 25:34
kids about the you know the rare
  • 25:30 - 25:36
black-footed ferret and so he's sort of
  • 25:34 - 25:38
a cream color is are they all the same
  • 25:36 - 25:41
internal we have different colors are
  • 25:38 - 25:44
other ferrets are much darker what do
  • 25:41 - 25:48
you think he weighs oh just listen five
  • 25:44 - 25:50
pounds he seems he seems okay yeah he's
  • 25:48 - 25:53
a fun little guy he's lots of lunch
  • 25:50 - 25:56
they're popular pets but you know before
  • 25:53 - 25:57
you get a pet like a fair you want to
  • 25:56 - 26:00
make sure that that you can get take
  • 25:57 - 26:02
care of them and they do have a lot of
  • 26:00 - 26:04
health issues so you you prepared for
  • 26:02 - 26:06
    vet bills
  • 26:04 - 26:09
okay what is he just doesn't like being
  • 26:06 - 26:11
on the set is your studies just curious
  • 26:09 - 26:15
he won't yes yeah wants to know what's
  • 26:11 - 26:17
going on oh my goodness well okay that's
  • 26:15 - 26:20
one and and your assistant whose reign
  • 26:17 - 26:22
of our on-site educators at the mic
  • 26:20 - 26:25
percocet all right Amy thank you for
  • 26:22 - 26:28
hero and she's got something else over
  • 26:25 - 26:32
there so we'll see what the next down
  • 26:28 - 26:34
yeah I gotta have a glove because um if
  • 26:32 - 26:38
I don't wear the glove I'll get pricked
  • 26:34 - 26:38
because it's an African pygmy hedgehog
  • 26:39 - 26:44
alrighty then Oh what did she do oh he
  • 26:42 - 26:49
crawled into lose you yeah he's curled
  • 26:44 - 26:53
up right now sort of hiding how is she
  • 26:49 - 26:53
    handling it very carefully
  • 26:58 - 27:04
okay so yeah this is a African pygmy
  • 27:01 - 27:06
hedgehog it's five to seven thousand
  • 27:04 - 27:09
quills and right now just sort of
  • 27:06 - 27:11
wondering what's going on they can curl
  • 27:09 - 27:14
up into a ball like this looks just like
  • 27:11 - 27:17
a man yeah and that sort of a defense
  • 27:14 - 27:19
    mechanism so they're surrounded by
  • 27:17 - 27:21
quills and who would want to eat you
  • 27:19 - 27:25
    know something like that they're
  • 27:21 - 27:27
predators are okay owls and Raptors
  • 27:25 - 27:31
slowly coming in where do we find the
  • 27:27 - 27:35
Hedgehog in our sup Africa in Africa
  • 27:31 - 27:36
okay oh you I wish you could hear me
  • 27:35 - 27:39
it's making yes you mentioned white
  • 27:36 - 27:43
annoys and just just getting used to
  • 27:39 - 27:45
being here and I bet it'll start to walk
  • 27:43 - 27:47
around here pretty soon what did and
  • 27:45 - 27:49
what do they eat in the wild knee
  • 27:47 - 27:52
insects and at the zoo they eat cat food
  • 27:49 - 27:54
cat food cat food so they have a liking
  • 27:52 - 27:59
for Kent oh there he is there is no face
  • 27:54 - 28:01
he's warming up to it yeah but what's
  • 27:59 - 28:02
the fuss is does he always like that
  • 28:01 - 28:05
sound yeah he's a little scared right
  • 28:02 - 28:07
now but he's all hey you think he's
  • 28:05 - 28:10
scared I'm stand on my side of it is and
  • 28:07 - 28:11
you know they lose five if they have
  • 28:10 - 28:13
five to seven thousand quills and they
  • 28:11 - 28:19
lose eighty percent of them every year
  • 28:13 - 28:21
do they said that they shot him Wow well
  • 28:19 - 28:24
that isn't I can't see his feet this
  • 28:21 - 28:27
lets me see if I can pick him up no he's
  • 28:24 - 28:29
not he's not having any of that is he no
  • 28:27 - 28:31
you said to me I don't think he trusts
  • 28:29 - 28:35
    you Ryan I don't know I don't know if I
  • 28:31 - 28:37
trust myself well I've seen his nose I
  • 28:35 - 28:43
haven't seen his eyes and soon he has
  • 28:37 - 28:44
four little feet under there yeah well I
  • 28:43 - 28:47
don't want to frighten hey yeah he's
  • 28:44 - 28:49
already feel bad that is yeah it's
  • 28:47 - 28:51
currently not yeah well that's wonderful
  • 28:49 - 28:53
so these are the kinds of animals you
  • 28:51 - 28:55
get to see ya that you go out and do
  • 28:53 - 28:57
your education and of course you know we
  • 28:55 - 29:00
have your favorite animal snakes and
  • 28:57 - 29:02
alligators and of course the skink and
  • 29:00 - 29:04
the bearded dragon that will go out all
  • 29:02 - 29:07
sorts of animals that are in our
  • 29:04 - 29:08
    education department addition is not
  • 29:07 - 29:12
    better than a snake
  • 29:08 - 29:13
yeah I don't know what I know snake but
  • 29:12 - 29:15
I bet the kids some of the kids I've
  • 29:13 - 29:17
seen some of the clips that you I'll
  • 29:15 - 29:20
have the children seem to like the
  • 29:17 - 29:23
snakes oh yeah I mean there's people
  • 29:20 - 29:25
that love snakes and so they're popular
  • 29:23 - 29:29
you know Cyrus count everyone somebody's
  • 29:25 - 29:32
gonna love it yeah well I oh he's moving
  • 29:29 - 29:33
yeah its mother huh so if you don't
  • 29:32 - 29:36
touch him he seems to get a little more
  • 29:33 - 29:39
comfortable under and come out of his
  • 29:36 - 29:42
little football has a defense mechanism
  • 29:39 - 29:44
and starts sniffing around at all so if
  • 29:42 - 29:46
you had some if you had some food would
  • 29:44 - 29:48
he eat it oh you know they give him a
  • 29:46 - 29:50
little bit of food and water when we
  • 29:48 - 29:53
take him out you see you in there
  • 29:50 - 29:54
they're hungry okay all right well you
  • 29:53 - 29:56
want to leave him here if you can keep
  • 29:54 - 29:58
him here we have maybe two more
  • 29:56 - 30:02
questions yeah and we'll wrap up here um
  • 29:58 - 30:04
the upcoming events this is about a
  • 30:02 - 30:06
    month of februari anything interesting
  • 30:04 - 30:09
we need to have our visitors know about
  • 30:06 - 30:12
