Guitar Quick Tip #11: Practice Breaking Strings (Guitar Lesson QT-011)
-
0:05 - 0:06Hey! How ya doing?
-
0:06 - 0:08Justin here with another quick tip for you,
-
0:08 - 0:11and today it is practice breaking strings.
-
0:11 - 0:14Now, I don't mean actually to practice breaking your strings
-
0:14 - 0:15cuz that would be kinda crazy,
-
0:15 - 0:18but breaking strings is kind of inevitable.
-
0:18 - 0:21It's gonna happen if you're out playing gigs and stuff.
-
0:21 - 0:23Sooner or later you're gonna bust a string on stage, it happens.
-
0:23 - 0:28Even often times I've restrung a guitar just before a show,
-
0:28 - 0:29and I've still managed to snap a string.
-
0:29 - 0:32Perhaps I've been getting into it particularly hard one day and it,
-
0:32 - 0:34you know, one of the strings popped.
-
0:34 - 0:38So, what I would recommend is that you kind of get ready for the emergency,
-
0:38 - 0:43and practice it a bit beforehand so you're not into a complete panic when it happens to you on stage.
-
0:43 - 0:47So, the way I used to practice it was to imagine a string had broken.
-
0:47 - 0:51If you wanted to, you could actually take different strings off.
-
0:51 - 0:55That wouldn't be a bad plan cuz it does feel a little different when there's a string gone,
-
0:55 - 0:56actually taken off the guitar.
-
0:56 - 0:59It kinda feels weird, but you don't have to go that far.
-
0:59 - 1:02The thing that I'd recommend that you practice,
-
1:02 - 1:04it's kinda fun as well, it'll help you explore the instrument,
-
1:04 - 1:07is just to pretend a string is missing.
-
1:07 - 1:11So, put on a backing track for 12 bar blues and do a 12 bar blues solo,
-
1:11 - 1:14but don't touch the second string.
-
1:15 - 1:20It's really interesting what happens, cuz so many of our licks go over that second string,
-
1:20 - 1:21Right?
-
1:21 - 1:22There's loads of them.
-
1:22 - 1:24All of your position changing stuff
-
1:24 - 1:27Loads of things are involved around that
-
1:27 - 1:28So suddenly when you take it away,
-
1:28 - 1:29or you can't use it,
-
1:30 - 1:32all of, well most of your licks don't work.
-
1:32 - 1:34So you have to kind of find new licks,
-
1:34 - 1:36and that can be kind of cool,
-
1:36 - 1:40cuz it forces you to explore things in a slightly different way.
-
1:40 - 1:43Now if you're a real beginner, it's just gonna be kinda be difficult right?
-
1:43 - 1:45Cuz you won't have enough vocabulary,
-
1:45 - 1:47enough licks to try and kind of get your way around.
-
1:47 - 1:49But if you're able to do a solo, you know,
-
1:49 - 1:52and you've got a little bit of vocabulary with your licks and stuff,
-
1:52 - 1:54it's a really, really fun exercise.
-
1:54 - 1:57You think about just the minor pentatonic scale,
-
2:02 - 2:03suddenly you've got that gap
-
2:04 - 2:07where you're not gonna play that second string.
-
2:07 - 2:08So all of like,
-
2:10 - 2:11you can't do those licks anymore.
-
2:12 - 2:13It would be,
-
2:15 - 2:17cuz all of the second string's gone.
-
2:17 - 2:18So it'll really make you explore.
-
2:18 - 2:20One of the things that's kinda interesting is
-
2:20 - 2:24to think along the strings instead of up and down.
-
2:24 - 2:26Most people think in terms of positions.
-
2:26 - 2:28But if you've got a kind of a groove,
-
2:29 - 2:30you could,
-
2:41 - 2:43That was all just the thinner string.
-
2:43 - 2:45So, trying to avoid the second string
-
2:45 - 2:47meant that I just stayed on the 1 string.
-
2:47 - 2:49Which is really good cuz you're kind of exploring it.
-
2:48 - 2:52I would never have played that particular line
-
2:52 - 2:55had I had access to the second string.
-
2:55 - 2:57Just because my fingers wouldn't have done that.
-
2:57 - 2:59So I've just found a new little thing.
-
2:59 - 3:01And also, when you skip a string,
-
3:01 - 3:03it sounds pretty interesting,
-
3:03 - 3:05particularly in blues. It's kinda more common
-
3:05 - 3:07to do string skippy stuff in rock and metal.
-
3:07 - 3:09But in a blues context,
-
3:16 - 3:18it's just a different kind of flavor that you get
-
3:18 - 3:21when suddenly the second string's taken away.
-
3:21 - 3:24It's really weird, but it's a great experience
-
3:24 - 3:25and a really good learning curve
-
3:25 - 3:27cuz it is gonna happen sooner or later in your
-
3:27 - 3:29guitar playing life you're gonna bust a string.
-
3:29 - 3:32So, much better to be prepare a little bit,
-
3:32 - 3:33I'm not saying you practice this all the time,
-
3:33 - 3:36just as a fun thing, you know, you're in a bit of a rut,
-
3:36 - 3:36not sure what to practice,
-
3:36 - 3:39this is the kind of thing that can open up a few doors,
-
3:39 - 3:41make you think just a little bit more different.
-
3:41 - 3:43"More different," terrible English.
-
3:43 - 3:46If anyone's learning English, forget that phrase.
-
3:46 - 3:48That's just really bad.
-
3:48 - 3:51You can see things differently is what I meant to say.
-
3:51 - 3:54And it's a really cool, fun thing you know.
-
3:54 - 3:56So, go off and have an explore.
-
3:56 - 3:59Either take the string off or just ban one string
-
3:59 - 4:01from a particular improvisation.
-
4:01 - 4:03Second string's kind of one of the hardest ones actually,
-
4:03 - 4:05but it's a good one to start off with just because
-
4:05 - 4:07it'll teach you straight away.
-
4:07 - 4:08Thinner string is a bit weird
-
4:08 - 4:10because a lot of guys rely on the thinner string
-
4:10 - 4:13for moving around, and the thick strings,
-
4:13 - 4:15for your chord playing, could be interesting too.
-
4:15 - 4:17Go off and have a check out of that idea,
-
4:17 - 4:20and I'll see you for many more quick tips and lessons
-
4:20 - 4:21and stuff very soon.
-
4:21 - 4:22Take care of yourselves, bye bye.
