BLADE RUNNER 2049 - "Black Out 2022" Anime Short

In 2022, an EMP detonation has caused a global blackout that has massive, destructive implications all over the world. Directed by Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo's Shinichiro Watanabe, Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is a new and highly-anticipated animated short which serves as a prologue for the upcoming feature film Blade Runner 2049.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

- Hello, it's Denis again.

I have been given the amazing opportunity
to direct Blade Runner 2049,

which picks up 30 years
after the first film.

So with that in mind,

I decided to ask a couple
of artists that I respect

to create three short stories
that dramatize some key events

that occurred after 2019,
when the first Blade Runner takes place,

but before 2049, when my
new Blade Runner story begins.

(loud explosion)

I am honored that Watanabe,
whose work I deeply admire,

agreed to create
this short anime for you.

I hope you enjoy this special glimpse
into Blade Runner 2022.

♪ (soft melancholic music) ♪

(people yelling)
- [Man] Get them!

(punches thudding)
(man grunting)

(people yelling and screaming)

- I'm gonna strangle you
until your eyes fall out.

(feet thudding)

glass shattering)

- [Woman] They're not human!
Damn Replicates!

(people yelling)

- [Man] Those skin jobs
got what they deserved!

(rain pattering)

- Well, look what
we have here: an angel.

- You don't have to be so cold.

- It's okay. This is what you're made for.
(men chuckle cruelly)

(man grunts)
- What the hell are you doing?

(man yells)
- And this is what I was made for.

- Who the--
(man screaming)

(gun fires)

(gun firing)

(man screaming)

(aircraft engine buzzing)

♪ (suspenseful music) ♪

(man groaning)

- We currently know
of five NEXUS 8 models

that have escaped from Kalanthia.

- Soldiers. Dealing with deserters
is the military's job now...

NOT our concern.
- Well, something needs to happen.

They have no special units
to handle this case.

- (clicks tongue) Damn skin jobs.
Isn't that why we branded them?

(speaking in foreign language)

- Omega-4 confirmed.

Johnny's in the basement
heading to the opera house.

- Where to, Iggy?
- On a drive, a long, long drive.

♪ (soft melodic music) ♪

- Ren... is it real?

- Of course not.

- Just like me.

- You worried, Trixie?
- No.

- Because I'm human?

I get it. Humans
are selfish, stupid liars.

But Replicants are different.

So pure, so perfect, never betrays.

More human than human.

(alarm blaring)
- Launch authorization confirmed.

- Initiating protocol X99K15X.

- That's affirmed. Initiate step one.

- Roger.
(switches clicking)

- Once we trigger the launch command,
the rest is up to Ren.

The explosion will generate an EMP,
shutting everything down,

a darkness that the humans
have never known.

- In three, two, one. Turn.

- (Iggy) Our job is to destroy
old magnetic backups in the archives.

Other cells will start the fireworks
at the remaining data centers.

All records on the ground
will be erased.

- (Trixie) Then we're almost human.
- All except our perfect right eye.

I saw the truth
on the fields of Kalanthia.

(beeping)

(static hissing)
- (man) Copy!

Do you copy?
(static hissing)

Electromagnetic interference!
(loud explosions)

Radars down!

Comms down!
(explosions continue)

(guns firing rapidly)

(labored breathing)

- (Iggy) That's when I realized
both sides were NEXUS,

Nothing more than toy soldiers
in a sandbox.

We may live longer than old NEXUS,
but life doesn't mean living.

I am for living.
That's what we fight for.

- If we die... we go to Heaven?

- No Heaven or Hell for us.
This world is all we've got.

(truck accelerating)

(loud explosion)

(alarm blaring)
- What the hell's going on now?

- We've lost control
of the missile, sir!

- (captain) We've what?!
- Possible course over LA, sir.

(tires squealing)

(loud crash)

(guns firing)

(glass shattering)

(metal creaking)

(man yells)

(man grunts)

- Ah!

(Trixie gasps)

♪ (ominous music) ♪

- You. What have you done?

- It's too late now.

(tires screeching)

(gasoline glugging)

(timer beeping)

(people screaming)
- (speaking in foreign language)

(electricity sputtering, shutting down)

(people screaming)
