Birds - peregrine falcon dives at 180 mph - Ultimate Killers - BBC wildlife

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    [music]
  • 0:02 - 0:06
Lloyd has been training Lady for 6 years
and he was convinced that she would want
  • 0:06 - 0:11
    to follow the [inaudible] lure.
Even in a skydive from 10,000 feet,
  • 0:11 - 0:17
but it took 6 months intensive training to
make her comfortable with this ultimate test.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    >>We'll be carrying this speedometer
to get our maximum speed as we fall.
  • 0:21 - 0:27
And this is the lure that Lady's been trained
to pursue and attack. And we're taking it with us.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    Alright, let's turn around and
see. Turn around to our left.
  • 0:41 - 0:48
    >>Where are we going to land?
    >>Crossroads near the four buildings.
  • 0:48 - 0:54
    >>I couldn't just start skydiving from scratch,
so I strapped to Andy, our skydiving expert.
  • 0:54 - 1:00
The plan was we'd jump together in tandem just
in case I forgot what to pull and when to pull it.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
A pair of skydivers can exceed
150 miles per hour in free-fall,
  • 1:08 - 1:13
so Lady was going to have to
fly faster than that to catch up.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    >>Ok. 5 seconds.
    >>I'm taking the hood off.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Ok. Hood is off.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
    >>Lloyd won't let us jump until he's
absolutely sure Lady is ready to fly.
  • 1:28 - 1:35
Lady is in charge. We just have to wait.
    >>Wait. Wait. Wait.
  • 1:35 - 1:46
    >>Come on, Lady.
    >>Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    >>The lure.
    >>Wait. Wait. Camera!
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    >>Ready!
    >>Steady! Go!
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    >>Bloody hell!
  • 2:11 - 2:17
    In moments we were clocking
    158 miles per hour! Scary!
  • 2:21 - 2:30
And Lady, within seconds she'd caught up.
She was just playing around us, effortlessly.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    In complete control.
  • 2:47 - 2:53
Ok. It's not a definitive scientific experiment,
but we calculate that to catch us up so quickly,
  • 2:53 - 2:59
    she must have accelerated beyond
    180 miles per hour. Phenomenal.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    >>Hey, hey! Now I like that!
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    I like that a lot!
    Magic. Absolute magic.
  • 3:12 - 3:19
    >>Saw her, just as we front looped on
exit, right there in front of us. Brilliant.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    I noticed she didn't
    front loop on exit though.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
She might be able to fly
well, but she has no style.
  • 3:24 - 3:29
    >>She has no style, but
    she has shitloads of speed.
  • 3:39 - 3:44
She's well over 3 times faster than a cheetah.
There's nothing else that comes even close.
  • 3:44 - 3:52
Amongst animals that use speed to kill, the
peregrine falcon has got to by my ultimate killer.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    Excellent.
