It's not hard if you are patient | Ed Viesturs | TEDxRainier

  • 0:07 - 0:10
    Host: Ed, there are lots
    of things I'm curious about.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
We have just a couple of minutes.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    Tell me how your decades
    of high-altitude climbing
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    have influenced how you navigate
    life here at sea level.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    (Laughter)
  • 0:20 - 0:22
Ed Viesturs: Well, you know ...
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    Everything that seems hard
    isn't really hard.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
And I've discovered that I've learned
a lot of patience and temperance
  • 0:29 - 0:32
from climbing mountains and, as I said,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
that you have to make a plan
and try to fulfill that plan.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    But in everyday life,
    there's stumbling blocks.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
There's things that change the way
you hope things are going to happen.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
And so the key thing that I've learned,
I think, is just being patient.
  • 0:47 - 0:53
But I'm so happy I did what I did,
I'm so glad I left Illinois and decided
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    (Laughter)
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    to do something where people
    were saying, "You're crazy!"
  • 0:58 - 1:01
Even my friends that I've now
    reacquainted myself with
  • 1:01 - 1:03
that I grew up with in grade school,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    when I left, they thought
I was crazy and now they go,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
"Ed, you're one of the few people
we actually know that actually did
  • 1:09 - 1:12
what he said he wanted to do
    and lived his dreams."
  • 1:12 - 1:15
Host: And how is it influencing
    how you're raising your kids?
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    Ah!
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    (Laughter)
  • 1:17 - 1:19
You know, that's my new Annapurna.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    (Laughter)
  • 1:20 - 1:24
It's this multi-year project, and again
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    (Laughter)
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    you have to be patient.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
I try to-- I'm so used
    to accomplishing something every day!
  • 1:31 - 1:34
I mean, I used to be
used to that, and now ...
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    (Laughter)
  • 1:35 - 1:38
I think I'm going to do this today,
and then it all goes out the window.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
But it's so fun, and there's
    so many people that say--
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    My wife and I, we're
in the thick of it right now,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    and it's stressful,
    we're exhausted, and they go,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
"Oh, but it goes so quickly,
    it goes so quickly!"
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    And I go, "Well,
it could go a little faster!"
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    (Laughter)
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Help us out here.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    - Ed, thank you so much.
    - Thank you.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    - ... for coming in and talking to us.
    - Thank you.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    (Applause)
