From terpenes to steroids part 2: squalene, cholesterol, and steroids

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    - [Voiceover] Now that the lights
  • 0:02 - 0:03
at the end of the tunnel a little bit,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
I'm going to move a little bit more
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    quickly through these reactions.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Let me just copy and paste here.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    I'm going to clear a
    little bit more space.
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    The body takes squalene
  • 0:33 - 0:36
and through a series of ring closing
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    or cyclization reactions,
    it makes cholesterol.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
We consume some cholesterol in our diet,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    but our body also completes
    this reaction in the liver.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
Our body takes squalene and turns it into
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    cholesterol in the liver.
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    Cholesterol travels through our blood
  • 1:14 - 1:17
and it lives in the inside of
    cells and on their surfaces.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
In the case of integrate organs that use
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    steroid hormones to communicate,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    cholesterol can actually be altered
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    to form the very characteristic
    steroid backbone.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Let me draw that.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
These are the four characteristic rings
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    of the steroid backbone.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
As you can see, we are a really long way
  • 1:55 - 1:58
off at this point from the very beginning
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    place that we started which
    was that isoprene unit.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
Now that I've dragged you all the way
  • 2:06 - 2:09
from isoprene to the steroid backbone,
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    I figured it was only
    fair that I showed you
  • 2:10 - 2:13
that this actually happens in your body,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    and there are actual steroids
    floating around your blood.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
I mentioned before that there are two
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    important classes of steroid
    hormones in the body,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
and those are the sex hormones
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    and the adrenal cortex steroids.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
So with the sex hormones I
    mentioned before estrogen's.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    We have estradiol and estrone,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and you can see their steroid backbone.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    Those are predominately
    made in the ovaries,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    and their principally involved in
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    secondary sex characteristics for females.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    We have progesterone.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
It's kind of the pregnancy hormone.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
It's involved in prepping the uterus,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    and it's also involved in
    maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    Then, we have androgen's.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    We have testosterone and androsterone,
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    and similarly to estrogen's,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    those regulate the secondary
    sex characteristics,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    but more so in males,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    and their predominantly
    made in the testis.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    Moving over to the
    adrenal cortex steroids,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    we had cortisone,
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    and cortisol,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
and those are the bodies stress hormones.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
They have a lot of effects
    from anti-inflammatory
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    to increasing carbohydrate metabolism.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    We also have aldosterone.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
Aldosterone is one of the main hormones
  • 4:05 - 4:07
that regulates our bodies blood pressure
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    and the fluid volume.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
I hope all of these images makes steroids
  • 4:11 - 4:13
a little bit more familiar to you
  • 4:13 - 4:16
now that you've seen the classic backbone,
  • 4:16 - 4:17
and you know how to make it.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
Maybe the next time you find yourself
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    enjoying the soothing relief
    of a menthol cough drop
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    or a savoring delicious
    ginger snap cookie,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
you'll think about the countless number of
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    terpenes that you're enjoying.
