0:00 - 0:03St. Vincent,
what's it like where you live? -
0:03 - 0:05Because it's pretty boring
here on Earth. -
0:05 - 0:07I mean,
I'm a human, you know. -
0:07 - 0:10I live part-time in Texas,
-
0:10 - 0:13and sometimes in New York City,
and mostly I live on the road. -
0:13 - 0:16Mostly you live in Mars,
and everybody's like, -
0:16 - 0:20"I am an alien.
-
0:20 - 0:22Our master is Bleepblorpbloop."
-
0:23 - 0:26Is that like,
your roommate talks like that? -
0:26 - 0:27From space?
-
0:27 - 0:29Do you want me
to answer that? -
0:31 - 0:33My name's Janessa Slater,
and I'm a media coach -
0:33 - 0:35who's helped hundreds of bands.
-
0:35 - 0:38This is Sound Advice.
-
0:39 - 0:41Why don't you go by
your real name, Annie Clark? -
0:41 - 0:44You know? 'Cause I think
maybe that will balance -
0:44 - 0:45kind of all of—
-
0:45 - 0:49Well, I think it's important
to carve out a space to be creative. -
0:49 - 0:52I feel like you kind of
carved out a space and you were like— -
0:53 - 0:56You know? Instead of just being like,
ooh, here's a little space. -
0:56 - 0:58You know,
I play art rock, so— -
0:59 - 1:01also there's a fitness model
named Annie Clark, -
1:01 - 1:03and a German composer.
-
1:03 - 1:06So the name
was sort of already taken. -
1:06 - 1:08You could have done, like,
-
1:08 - 1:12Annie Clarkson or something,
you know, just— -
1:12 - 1:14You know
Prince's real name isn't Prince. -
1:14 - 1:16Yeah,
but he's actually a prince, right? -
1:17 - 1:19Isn't he like prince of the night
or something? -
1:20 - 1:22Can somebody find out
what Prince does? -
1:22 - 1:24You know, what he's prince of?
-
1:25 - 1:28He's prince of something, I know.
I just can't think of what it is. -
1:29 - 1:31Maybe of music.
-
1:31 - 1:33Well,
that's Michael Bolton, but— -
1:33 - 1:34Yeah.
-
1:34 - 1:37[Janessa] So you've described
your latest self-titled album -
1:37 - 1:40as party music
that you could play at a funeral. -
1:40 - 1:45Now, I went to my ex-husband Darren's
aunt's funeral a few years ago, -
1:45 - 1:48and I of course brought
my Eddie Money CD. -
1:48 - 1:52And, you know, you can kind of see
where it goes from there. -
1:52 - 1:56But the point is
we did not get two tickets to paradise. -
1:56 - 2:00We more got, like, two tickets
to get the hell out of there. -
2:00 - 2:04Two tickets to this weird grassy area
outside of the graveyard. -
2:04 - 2:06Sucked.
-
2:06 - 2:09But I can't wait to hear your album
because, you know— -
2:11 - 2:12I have another funeral coming up.
-
2:12 - 2:16[St. Vincent] So you're giving me advice
but you've never actually heard my music. -
2:16 - 2:18[Janessa] Yeah.
No, I haven't heard your album yet, -
2:18 - 2:20because it's like,
my fee is only so big, -
2:20 - 2:23so it's like,
this is what you pay for. -
2:23 - 2:26[St. Vincent] What is it exactly
that you do for artists? -
2:26 - 2:28[Janessa] Oh, I'm a media consultant.
-
2:28 - 2:31So to me, this is more important
-
2:31 - 2:33than this.
-
2:33 - 2:35So I'm just wondering,
do you have any, like, dirt -
2:35 - 2:38that you want to, like, give to me,
-
2:38 - 2:40and then I'll, like,
leak it to the media? -
2:40 - 2:41It's actually really good PR.
-
2:41 - 2:42[St. Vincent] Um.
-
2:42 - 2:44[Janessa] Like, let's think
of a good scandal for you -
2:44 - 2:46to kind of get you out there.
>> [St. Vincent] Okay. -
2:46 - 2:49[Janessa] Maybe you were caught
at a drug store, -
2:49 - 2:53and you stole, you know, a beer,
-
2:53 - 2:56because technically,
you thought it said two— -
2:56 - 2:59it did say two-for-one,
but that promotion had ended. -
2:59 - 3:01But you didn't realize it.
I don't know. -
3:01 - 3:04Maybe you stayed at a hotel
and you trashed it, -
3:04 - 3:05something like that.
-
3:05 - 3:09[St. Vincent] I mean, I don't—
I wouldn't trash a hotel room, because I— -
3:09 - 3:12[Janessa] You don't have to actually trash it.
-
3:12 - 3:14[St. Vincent] It's a service industry,
and usually the people who get tips -
3:14 - 3:17aren't the maids, but they ought to.
-
3:17 - 3:18[Janessa] You could still
leave a tip for the maid. -
3:18 - 3:21But what I'm saying is
then we'll leak to the press, -
3:21 - 3:25St. Vincent just stayed
at the Royal—whatever, -
3:25 - 3:28and she left zero dollars for the maid.
-
3:28 - 3:31And then everyone'll go,
"Oh, who's this St. Vincent? -
3:31 - 3:36I should listen to her more.
She sounds like a real deev." -
3:36 - 3:38Or like a cheapskate.
-
3:39 - 3:42Does a cheapskate sell records?
-
3:43 - 3:44[Janessa] I've sold records, so.
-
3:44 - 3:46There's your answer.
