Can beauty open our hearts to difficult conversations?

    That's a complex idea,

    because the things that must be said
    are not always lovely.

    But somehow,

    if they're reflective of truth,
  • 0:29 - 0:34
    I think, fundamentally,
    that makes them beautiful.

    There's the aesthetic beauty of the work

    that in some cases functions
    as more of a Trojan horse.

    It allows one to open their hearts
    to difficult conversations.

    Maybe you feel attracted to the beauty,
  • 1:03 - 1:08
    and while compelled by the technique,
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    the color,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    the form or composition,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    maybe the difficult
    conversation sneaks up.

    I really taught myself how to paint
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    by spending time at museums
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    and looking at the people that --
  • 1:26 - 1:30
    the artists, rather --
    that I was told were the masters.

    Looking at the Rembrandts
    ["The Night Watch"],
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Renoir ["Luncheon of the Boating Party"],

    Manet ["Luncheon on the Grass"],

    it becomes quite obvious
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    that if I'm going to learn
    how to paint a self-portrait
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    by studying those people,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    I'm going to be challenged
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    when it comes to mixing my skin
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    or mixing the skin
    of those people in my family.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    There's literally formulas
    written down historically
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    to tell me how to paint white skin --
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    what colors I should use
    for the underpainting,
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    what colors I should use
    for the impasto highlights --
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    that doesn't really exist for dark skin.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    It's not a thing.
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    It's not a thing
  • 2:12 - 2:18
    because the reality is,
    our skin wasn't considered beautiful.
  • 2:19 - 2:25
    The picture, the world that is represented
    in the history of paintings
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    doesn't reflect me.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
    It doesn't reflect the things
    that I value in that way,
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    and that's the conflict
    that I struggle with so frequently,
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    is, I love the technique
    of these paintings,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    I have learned from the technique
    of these paintings,
  • 2:43 - 2:49
    and yet I know that they have
    no concern for me.

    And so there are so many of us
    who are amending this history
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    in order to simply say we were there.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    Because you couldn't see
    doesn't mean we weren't there.

    We have been there.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    We have been here.
  • 3:06 - 3:11
    We've continued to be seen
    as not beautiful,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    but we are,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    and we are here.

    So many of the things that I make
  • 3:19 - 3:25
    end up as maybe futile attempts
    to reinforce that idea.

    Even though I've had the Western training,
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    my eye is still drawn
    to the folks who look like me.

    And so sometimes in my work,
  • 3:42 - 3:48
    I have used strategies like whiting out
    the rest of the composition
  • 3:48 - 3:54
    in order to focus on the character
    who may go unseen otherwise.

    I have cut out other figures
    from the painting,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    one, to either emphasize their absence,
  • 4:02 - 4:08
    or two, to get you to focus
    on the other folks in the composition.

    So "The Jerome Project," aesthetically,
    draws on hundreds of years
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    of religious icon painting,

    a kind of aesthetic structure
    that was reserved for the church,
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    reserved for saints.

    It's a project that is an exploration
    of the criminal justice system,
  • 4:39 - 4:44
    not asking the question
    "Are these people innocent or guilty?",
  • 4:44 - 4:49
    but more, "Is this the way
    that we should deal with our citizens?"
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    I started a body of work
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    because after being
    separated from my father
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    for almost 15 years,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    I reconnected with my father, and ...
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    I really didn't know how
    to make a place for him in my life.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
    As with most things I don't understand,
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    I work them out in the studio.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    And so I just started making
    these portraits of mug shots,
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    starting because I did
    a Google search for my father,
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    just wondering what had happened
    over this 15-year period.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    Where had he gone?
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    And I found his mug shot,
    which of course was of no surprise.
  • 5:29 - 5:34
    But I found in that first search
    97 other Black men
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    with exactly the same first and last name,
  • 5:36 - 5:40
    and I found their mug shots,
    and that -- that was a surprise.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    And not knowing what to do,
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    I just started painting them.
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    Initially, the tar was a formula
    that allowed me to figure out
  • 5:49 - 5:54
    how much of these men's life
    had been lost to incarceration.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    But I gave up that,
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    and the tar became far more symbolic
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    as I continued,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    because what I realized is
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    the amount of time that you spend
    incarcerated is just the beginning
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    of how long it's going to impact
    the rest of your life.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    So in terms of beauty within that context,
  • 6:13 - 6:17
    I know from my friend's family
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    who have been incarcerated,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    who are currently incarcerated,
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    folks want to be remembered.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    Folks want to be seen.
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    We put people away for a long time,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    in some cases,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    for that one worst thing
    that they've done.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    So to a degree,
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    it's a way of just saying,
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    "I see you.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    We see you."
  • 6:42 - 6:46
    And I think that, as a gesture,
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    is beautiful.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    In the painting "Behind
    the Myth of Benevolence,"
  • 6:51 - 6:56
    there's almost this curtain
    of Thomas Jefferson
  • 6:56 - 7:03
    painted and pulled back
    to reveal a Black woman who's hidden.
  • 7:03 - 7:08
    This Black woman is at once
    Sally Hemings,
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    but she's also every other Black woman
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    who was on that plantation Monticello
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    and all the rest of them.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    The one thing we do know
    about Thomas Jefferson
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    is that he believed in liberty,
  • 7:22 - 7:26
    maybe more strongly than anyone
    who's ever written about it.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    And if we know that to be true,
    if we believe that to be true,
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    then the only benevolent thing
    to do in that context
  • 7:33 - 7:36
    would be to extend that liberty.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    And so in this body of work,
  • 7:39 - 7:43
    I use two separate paintings
  • 7:43 - 7:48
    that are forced together
    on top of one another
  • 7:48 - 7:55
    to emphasize this tumultuous
    relationship between Black and White
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    in these compositions.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    And so, that --
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    that contradiction,
  • 8:01 - 8:06
    that devastating reality
    that's always behind the curtain,
  • 8:06 - 8:11
    what is happening
    in race relations in this country --
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    that's what this painting is about.
  • 8:19 - 8:23
    The painting is called
    "Another Fight for Remembrance."
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    The title speaks to repetition.
  • 8:25 - 8:32
    The title speaks to the kind of violence
    against Black people
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    by the police
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    that has happened
    and continues to happen,
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    and we are now seeing it happen again.
  • 8:41 - 8:48
    The painting is sort of editorialized
    as a painting about Ferguson.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    It's not not about Ferguson,
  • 8:51 - 8:56
    but it's also not not about Detroit,
  • 8:56 - 9:01
    it's also not not about Minneapolis.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    The painting was started because
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    on a trip to New York
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    to see some of my own art
    with my brother,
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    as we spent hours walking
    in and out of galleries,
  • 9:15 - 9:22
    we ended the day by being stopped
    by an undercover police car
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    in the middle of the street.
  • 9:23 - 9:26
    These two police officers
    with their hands on their gun
  • 9:26 - 9:27
    told us to stop.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    They put us up against the wall.
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    They accused me of stealing art
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    out of a gallery space
    where I was actually exhibiting art.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
    And as they stood there
    with their hands on their weapons,
  • 9:40 - 9:45
    I asked the police officer
    what was different about my citizenship
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    than that of all of the other people
  • 9:48 - 9:52
    who were not being disturbed
    in that moment.
  • 9:52 - 9:56
    He informed me that they had been
    following us for two hours
  • 9:56 - 10:00
    and that they had been getting
    complaints about Black men,
  • 10:00 - 10:03
    two Black men walking
    in and out of galleries.
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    That painting is about the reality,
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    that it's not a question
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    of if this is going to happen again,
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    it's a question of when.
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    This most recent body of work
    is called "From a Tropical Space."
  • 10:24 - 10:28
    This series of paintings
    is about Black mothers.
  • 10:28 - 10:34
    The series of paintings takes place
    in a supersaturated,
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    maybe surrealist world,
  • 10:36 - 10:40
    not that far from the one we live in.
  • 10:40 - 10:41
    But in this world,
  • 10:41 - 10:45
    the children of these Black women
  • 10:46 - 10:47
    are disappearing.
  • 10:49 - 10:52
    What this work is really about
    is the trauma,
  • 10:53 - 10:57
    the things that Black women
    and women of color in particular
  • 10:57 - 10:58
    in our community
  • 10:58 - 11:03
    have to struggle through
    in order to set their kids out
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    on the path of life.
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    What's encouraging for me
  • 11:08 - 11:13
    is that this practice of mine
  • 11:13 - 11:16
    has given me the opportunity
  • 11:16 - 11:20
    to work with young people in my community.
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    I'm quite certain
    the answers are not in me,
  • 11:23 - 11:24
    but if I'm hopeful at all,
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    it's that they may be in them.
  • 11:27 - 11:31
    "NXTHVN" is a project that started
    about five years ago.
  • 11:32 - 11:35
    NXTHVN is a 40,000-square-foot
    arts incubator
  • 11:35 - 11:37
    in the heart of the Dixwell neighborhood
  • 11:37 - 11:38
    in New Haven, Connecticut.
  • 11:38 - 11:41
    This is a predominantly
    Black and Brown neighborhood.
  • 11:41 - 11:48
    It is a neighborhood that has
    the history of jazz at every corner.
  • 11:48 - 11:52
    Our neighborhood, in many ways,
    has been disinvested in.
  • 11:52 - 11:58
    Schools are struggling to really
    prepare our population
  • 11:58 - 12:01
    for the futures ahead of them.
  • 12:01 - 12:06
    I know that creativity
    is an essential asset.
  • 12:07 - 12:10
    It takes creativity
  • 12:11 - 12:15
    to be able to imagine a future
  • 12:15 - 12:18
    that is so different than the one
    that is before you.
  • 12:18 - 12:25
    And so every artist in our program
    has a high school studio assistant:
  • 12:25 - 12:29
    there's a high school student
    that comes from the city of New Haven
  • 12:29 - 12:32
    who works with them
    and learns their craft,
  • 12:32 - 12:34
    learns their practice.
  • 12:34 - 12:36
    And so we've seen the ways
  • 12:36 - 12:41
    in which pointing folks
    at the power of creativity
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    can change them.
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    Beauty is complicated
  • 12:48 - 12:50
    because of how we define it.
  • 12:51 - 12:56
    I think that beauty and truth
  • 12:56 - 12:59
    are intertwined somehow.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    There is something
  • 13:03 - 13:04
    beautiful
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    in truth-telling.
  • 13:08 - 13:09
    That is:
  • 13:10 - 13:14
    that as an act, truth-telling
  • 13:14 - 13:18
    and the myriad ways it manifests --
  • 13:18 - 13:20
    there's beauty in that.
