Beauty Is A Heart That Generates Love | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh (EN subtitles)

  • 0:01 - 0:04
In Saṃyutta Nikāya (Tương Ưng Bộ),
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Lord Buddha said, "Practicing loving-kindness,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    we attain beauty."
  • 0:11 - 0:15
When we turn to the Chinese translation of
this sentence, we see that some venerables
  • 0:15 - 0:21
translated it as, "Practicing loving-kindness, we attain
peace and quiet." That's incorrectly translated.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    Lord Buddha very clearly said,
    "Practicing loving-kindness, we attain beauty."
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    So, loving-kindness or love
is the most beautiful thing in life.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
If, in our heart, there's no loving-kindness,
  • 0:34 - 0:41
we have nothing beautiful to dedicate
    to ourselves and others.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    That's why the Buddha's path
    is the path of love.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    The path of understanding.
    The path of love.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    But in order to love,
    there has to be understanding.
  • 0:53 - 1:02
The person in whom the substance
of love has already dried up
  • 1:02 - 1:06
is someone who lives in great pain
    and suffers great loneliness.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
Look around us and see for ourselves.
  • 1:13 - 1:19
We'll see that those who suffer the most are those
in whom the stream of love has already dried up.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    They deserve much compassion.
  • 1:22 - 1:29
The only way to help them is to revive that substance
of loving-kindness in them, making it spring up.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
Only then, can they experience happiness.
  • 1:34 - 1:41
And if we see that in us the stream of love dries up
a little bit, we have to be quickly informed.
  • 1:41 - 1:48
Because when we don't have the stream of love,
when that nectar runs out, when it no longer flows,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
that's when we have a lot of pain and suffering.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    That's why, practicing loving-kindness
    means practicing happiness.
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    Loving someone, helping someone,
    and making someone happy,
  • 2:03 - 2:08
we think only that person benefits from it.
The fact is, when love is revived in one's heart,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
when there's only the wish to love,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
very naturally there's already a sense
of well-being and lightness in one's being.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
One has yet to do anything
    or say anything.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
But with only a fervent wish to relieve someone
from their suffering and make them happy,
  • 2:22 - 2:29
that wish has already been an energy that brings
lightness, well-being, and happiness to our heart.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
That's why, well wishes are important.
  • 2:35 - 2:42
For someone who doesn't have the energy
of love inside, it feels extremely lonely.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
They feel cut off from everything in life.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    To them,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    loneliness is a hell.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
Because they can only live by themselves.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    They cannot establish
    communication with anyone.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    Because they're unable
    to understand and love anyone.
  • 3:11 - 3:15
Because of that, we need to know
that love is a substance that helps us
  • 3:15 - 3:21
    establish connections with other people,
and with other beings, other species.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    We can establish connections
    with the human species.
  • 3:23 - 3:29
We can establish connections with other beings
    like animals, plants, and minerals.
  • 3:29 - 3:34
At that moment, we'll come to see
that we and those beings share the same life.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    With that,
  • 3:36 - 3:41
the way we treat them will be that
    of nonviolence, non-harming, and love.
  • 3:41 - 3:46
We no longer think about using violence,
we no longer think about killing.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    Instead, we'll think about protecting.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
We have a gatha to recite
    when looking in the mirror.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    "Awareness is a mirror
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    "reflecting the four elements.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
"Beauty is a heart that generates love
  • 4:04 - 4:07
"and a mind that is open."
  • 4:07 - 4:09
Because "a mind that is open"
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    brings about inclusiveness and acceptance.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    It brings about true love.
  • 4:15 - 4:20
And true love is the most beautiful thing in life.
  • 4:22 - 4:31
A famous artwork or a well-known piece of music
    is beautiful without a doubt.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    But compared to true love,
    they mean nothing.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
Beauty is a heart that generates love.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    "Awareness is a mirror
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    "reflecting the four elements.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
"Beauty is a heart that generates love
and a mind that is open."
  • 4:48 - 4:52
So, every morning, when we hold the toothbrush
    brushing our teeth,
  • 4:52 - 4:55
look at ourselves in the mirror
    for just a moment.
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    We have time.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
Look at ourselves for just a moment.
  • 4:59 - 5:04
We see our four-element body. Smile a bit.
    Just smile gently to ourselves.
  • 5:04 - 5:09
We bestow on ourselves a gentle smile
so that our face can relax.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    That's already love.
  • 5:11 - 5:16
"Awareness is a mirror, reflecting the four elements.
Beauty is a heart that generates love."
  • 5:16 - 5:20
In us, is there a flowing stream of love?
  • 5:20 - 5:27
    What have we done today
for this stream of love to flow in us?
  • 5:28 - 5:33
We really need to practice looking
at all beings with "a mind that is open."
  • 5:33 - 5:39
It means, the eyes of loving-kindness & compassion.
In Sino-Vietnamese, "từ nhãn thị chúng sanh 慈眼視眾生."
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    The Buddha taught us
  • 5:41 - 5:46
to practice looking with the eyes
    of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    Because Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva knows how
to look with the eyes of Great Compassion.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    Now, first of all,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    while brushing our teeth,
learn to look at ourselves in the mirror
  • 5:57 - 6:02
to see that we need to love ourselves,
that we need to smile at ourselves.
  • 6:03 - 6:09
We have to make the stream of love in us
    spring up and flow.
  • 6:10 - 6:16
And we need to look at our Dharma siblings
with a mind that is open.
  • 6:16 - 6:22
When we can do that, there's inner peace and lightness
in ourselves. And our siblings will feel the same.
  • 6:22 - 6:31
Because that look is one of all-embracingness and
inclusiveness. Not of fault-finding or criticalness.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    It's rather a look
  • 6:34 - 6:39
    of forgiveness, of all-encompassingness.
  • 6:39 - 6:44
The kind of look that a mother has
    at her own child.
  • 6:46 - 6:50
If we want to advance in our daily practice,
  • 6:50 - 6:54
    we should use a notebook
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    — a pocket notebook,
    to note down everything.
  • 6:57 - 7:02
Because a day given to us to learn
    and practice mindfulness is a...
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    very precious day.
  • 7:05 - 7:10
We have a whole day to practice, a day which we
can make good use of, to progress in our practice.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    So why do we...
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    take our day for granted?
  • 7:15 - 7:23
24 hours are given to us to learn and practice
living mindfully. So why don't we give it our all?
  • 7:23 - 7:28
When we give a Day of Mindfulness,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
    we plan out very well
    how the day will go.
  • 7:31 - 7:38
Who will give Dharma talk. Who will lead the mindful
walk. Who will give the guided sitting meditation.
  • 7:38 - 7:43
And who will read out loud the Five
    Contemplations Before Eating at mealtime.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    We're very good at planning
    a Day of Mindfulness.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
It should be the same with a day
    spent in the monastery.
  • 7:49 - 7:54
We should be wise drawing up an agenda for that day.
  • 7:54 - 8:00
Don't let the day float by like water-hyacinths
    floating pointlessly on a river.
  • 8:00 - 8:05
    We have to claim sovereignty
    over our day, making...
  • 8:05 - 8:09
a day of practice into one...
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    filled with meanings,
  • 8:10 - 8:16
where each moment of the day is an opportunity
to grow love and compassion in our heart.
  • 8:17 - 8:21
We have a pocket notebook and a pen,
  • 8:21 - 8:23
so why don't we do this?
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    When we sit in meditation
    in the morning,
  • 8:25 - 8:29
why don't we use that time
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    to...
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    to...
  • 8:33 - 8:38
    look deeply into our day
and see how we're going about our day
  • 8:38 - 8:43
so it can be a truly precious gift
  • 8:43 - 8:48
    from us to ourselves,
and from us to other people?
  • 8:50 - 8:55
Why do we sit and long for the time
of sitting meditation to be over?
  • 8:55 - 9:00
The time we sit in meditation can
be used to do that, i.e. to contemplate.
  • 9:00 - 9:04
No one stops us from bringing a pocket notebook
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    to the sitting meditation session.
  • 9:08 - 9:13
Of course, the whole time we sit in meditation,
we don't let our mind wander.
  • 9:13 - 9:17
We don't use the time for sitting meditation
    to do anything else.
  • 9:17 - 9:22
However, if during our sitting there's an insight,
  • 9:22 - 9:27
    or something insightful about ourselves
or our community, we're allowed to write it down.
  • 9:27 - 9:31
That insight will help us succeed in our practice.
  • 9:31 - 9:34
With that, we turn that day into a happy day.
  • 9:34 - 9:37
    Because we should know
that if that day we have happiness,
  • 9:37 - 9:42
those who practice in the same community with us
    will also have happiness.
