Cracking the Codes: Joy DeGruy, A Trip to the Grocery Store

  • 0:06 - 0:09
    - My sister-in-law
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    who's half Black, half white,
    but looks white,
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    blue eyes, whiter than most
    white folks, very white,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
she and I, you know, we
    kinda grew up together.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    We raised our children together,
    so they're first cousins.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    And it's wonderful, very,
    very multi-cultural family.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    So we're going into
    Safeway one day,
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    and Kathleen, my sister-in-law,
    is in front of me.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    She's writing a check
    for her groceries.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
Now, my daughter who, at the
    time, was 10 years old
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    was standing with me and
    I was directly behind her,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    getting ready to get
    my groceries,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    so Kathleen comes up and
    the checker who was
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    a strawberry-blonde, freckled,
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    very delightful warm, you know,
    the checker, this young woman
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    is talking to Kathleen,
    "Hey, how are you doing?
  • 0:53 - 0:55
"isn't it a nice day today?"
    They're just chatting up
  • 0:55 - 0:58
and she says, yes, so Kathy
writes her check and she steps
  • 0:58 - 1:01
off to the side with her groceries
    because she's waiting for me.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Of course, again, Kathleen
    looks white, right?
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    So, I come up.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    No conversation,
    she looks up at me…
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    Absolutely no,
    just little chatter.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    And I write my check,
    my daughter, however, is 10
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    notices immediately the
    difference in how
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    she responds to me.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
So I write my check and she
    goes: "I'm going to need
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    "two pieces of ID."
  • 1:25 - 1:29
At which point my daughter looks
at me and she gets very, very
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    embarrassed and tears are kind
of coming up in her eye like,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Mommy, you're not gonna…
  • 1:35 - 1:38
You're not gonna let her do this,
why is she doing this to us, right?
  • 1:38 - 1:41
So, I'm trying to figure out
    what I should do because
  • 1:41 - 1:44
behind me are two elderly white
    women, right, and I'm thinking,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    okay, so then I become
    the angry Black woman.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    And they're going to be,
and I just, I'm just trying to
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    second guess all the drama.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
So then, I just give her the
two pieces of ID, I say,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    you know, some things, you've
    got to choose your battles.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    And then, it gets worse.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
She pulls out the bad check book.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
So, this is the book that shows
    the people who have
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    written bad checks.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
So she starts searching for my
    license in the bad checks,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    at which point, it's just
    of of control now.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    Just as I'm standing there
trying to decide what to do,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    and it's really, deeply
    humiliating and now my daughter
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    is in full-blown emotionally
    upset, who's 10.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    My sister-in-law walks back over
and she steps in and she says,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    "Excuse me,
    why are you doing this?"
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    And they checker goes, "Well,
what do you--what do you mean?"
  • 2:34 - 2:36
She goes, "Why are you taking
her through all of these changes?
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    "Why are you doing that?"
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    She goes,
    "Well, this is our policy."
  • 2:40 - 2:42
She goes, "No, it's not your
    policy because you didn't
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    "do that with me."
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    "Oh well, I know you,
    you've been--"
  • 2:45 - 2:48
She goes, "No, no, she's been
here for years, I've only lived
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    "here for three months."
  • 2:50 - 2:53
And so, at this point, the two
    white, elderly ladies go,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
"Oh, I can't believe what this
checker has done with this woman
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    "that is totally unacceptable!"
    At which point, the manager
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    walks over.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
So the manager walks over and
says, "Is there a problem here?"
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    And then, my sister-in-law,
    again, responds, she goes,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
"Yes, there is a problem here.
    Here is what happened."
  • 3:09 - 3:11
So, you see, she used her white
    privilege and even though
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    Kathleen is half Black and
    half white, she recognizes
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    what that means and
    she made the statement,
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    she pointed out the injustice,
and she, as a result of that
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    one act, influenced everyone
    in that space.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    But what would've happened,
    I can't know for certain,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    had the Black woman said,
    "This is unfair!
  • 3:29 - 3:33
"Why are you doing this to me?"
Would it have had the same impact?
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    But Kathleen knew that she
    walked through the world
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    differently than I did and
    she used her white privilege
  • 3:39 - 3:43
to educate and make right a
    situation that was wrong.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    That's what you can do,
    every single day.
