Stop Ebola in Big City...Never Done Before — Factpod #12
-
0:04 - 0:09A major issue at the President Council
meeting today on Ebola -
0:09 - 0:12was how to communicate
the second phase, -
0:12 - 0:18now when the numbers are down to about
10 cases per day in the country. -
0:18 - 0:22The discussion was
how to handle zero. -
0:22 - 0:27In many public health campaigns,
we say "zero traffic deaths", -
0:27 - 0:30but we really don't mean
zero traffic deaths. -
0:30 - 0:34We mean that we want to
get them as low as possible. -
0:34 - 0:38If we use that in Ebola,
-
0:38 - 0:42it has to be used in a way
so people really realize -
0:42 - 0:46that we have to eliminate human
to human transmission completely. -
0:46 - 0:50The first message in Liberia
was, "Ebola is real". -
0:50 - 0:54Today, the population of this country
-
0:54 - 0:57is sadly aware that Ebola is real.
-
0:57 - 1:01The new message now will be,
"Ebola must go". -
1:01 - 1:03I think that's a good message
-
1:03 - 1:06because it doesn't put a time limit.
-
1:06 - 1:11Because we need endurance: this may
take months, half a year. -
1:11 - 1:14Liberia is not
in control of the future -
1:14 - 1:19because the neighboring countries
also have Ebola -
1:19 - 1:21and they have
much more than Liberia. -
1:21 - 1:25So the whole region
has to be freed from it. -
1:25 - 1:28The longer I work here -I'm here
for the seventh week now- -
1:28 - 1:32the more I realize
how huge this task is. -
1:32 - 1:34This has never been done before.
-
1:34 - 1:39An African big city
with generalized Ebola epidemics -
1:39 - 1:41that hasn't existed before,
-
1:41 - 1:45no one has done what we have to do
the next few months here. -
1:45 - 1:49We have to clear Monrovia
and the Montserrado County completely -
1:49 - 1:51from Ebola transmission.
-
1:51 - 1:55It's a huge task, but
it can be done, it's possible. -
1:55 - 1:57We just need to get organized
-
1:57 - 2:00with all the resources
that are now available.

- Stop Ebola in Big City...Never Done Before — Factpod #12
- Description:
-
I am on my way from the meeting with the Liberian President's Council. Zero means zero when it comes to Ebola. Hunting the virus in a big city is something new. The daily number of urban cases remain stable. The international support must continue until the number reaches zero; or else the virus will continue to worsening poverty and threaten the rest of the world.
