Wellness Central: Stress
-
0:00 - 0:03>> Stress, wow.
-
0:04 - 0:06>> Well, stress-
-
0:07 - 0:09>> Stress affects me dramatically.
-
0:09 - 0:16>> Certainly it affects us all, but I
have a very tenuous relationship with it. -
0:16 - 0:21>> In my experience, stress will decrease my
appetite, and make it difficult for me to sleep -
0:21 - 0:25at night, and also make it
difficult for me to concentrate -
0:25 - 0:27on the tasks that I'm stressing out about.
-
0:27 - 0:31>> Usually, it makes me tired
and causes me to go to sleep. -
0:31 - 0:39>> Like my head is in like a vice grip, and
my heart feels like it's being squeezed. -
0:39 - 0:42>> In small quantities it
works as a motivator I'd say. -
0:42 - 0:49but too much of it and you just get
overwhelmed, and you just shut down. -
0:49 - 0:49_
-
0:49 - 0:52>> Some ways that I manage my stress
when I have it: try not to use my phone, -
0:52 - 0:59or study for a certain amount of time, and
just focus on living beyond the stresses. -
1:00 - 1:03>> It's really good to have moments
just set aside where it's like, -
1:03 - 1:05"I do this assignment, and
then I take a little break. -
1:05 - 1:07I do this assignment, and
then I take a little break." -
1:07 - 1:10When you have that schedule,
it's a lot less disorganized, -
1:10 - 1:12and it's a lot less stressful
as a result of that. -
1:13 - 1:15>> I talk with other people.
-
1:15 - 1:18That's definitely one big thing I do that's
always helped every single time I've done it, -
1:19 - 1:19basically.
-
1:19 - 1:22>> I try to go on nature walks.
-
1:22 - 1:27>> Herbal teas for me have
been, you know, a big, big help. -
1:27 - 1:33And some of the best ones out there are: Lemon
Bomb, Chamomile, Lavender, and scull cap. -
1:34 - 1:42>> Deep breathing, relaxation, exercise,
you know, oh, playing the guitar. -
1:44 - 1:45Yeah, music.
-
1:45 - 1:46Music is a wonder.
-
1:46 - 1:47It really works.
-
1:48 - 1:52>> The way I've been managing stress, is signing
up for the tai chi classes here on campus. -
1:53 - 1:59I also take adaptive PE, and
working out four days a week here. -
1:59 - 2:02It helps tremendously.
-
2:02 - 2:09>> And you'll know when your mind
says, "Okay, man, I need a break." -
2:10 - 2:14So you take a break and relax your brain
a little bit, and do something different, -
2:14 - 2:18and you come back to your main
goal - what you want to do. -
2:19 - 2:23>> Find time for humor, or watch a funny movie,
call a friend that can always make you laugh, -
2:24 - 2:26or listen to your favorite comedian's podcast.
-
2:26 - 2:30Laughing can reduce stress, and is
an important element of self-care. -
2:30 - 2:37>> Meditation and mindfulness practices have
been really helpful for clearing my mind -
2:37 - 2:39of clutter and focusing on
what's really important. -
2:40 - 2:41>> To call a friend.
-
2:41 - 2:42Text a friend.
-
2:43 - 2:44Go on a walk with a friend.
-
2:45 - 2:48Feel the stress melt away when
you spend time with others. -
2:48 - 2:53>> Slow and steady wins the race and when
you think about life and the grander scale -
2:53 - 2:55of what are we all racing towards?
-
2:55 - 2:57Well, you know, we're all going to die one day.
-
2:57 - 3:01If that's the finish line, then
why, we're not racing to that. -
3:01 - 3:07We need to you know, stop and
smell the roses along the way.
