Wellness Central: Stress

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    >> Stress, wow.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    >> Well, stress-
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    >> Stress affects me dramatically.
  • 0:09 - 0:16
    >> Certainly it affects us all, but I
have a very tenuous relationship with it.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
    >> In my experience, stress will decrease my
appetite, and make it difficult for me to sleep
  • 0:21 - 0:25
at night, and also make it
    difficult for me to concentrate
  • 0:25 - 0:27
on the tasks that I'm stressing out about.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    >> Usually, it makes me tired
and causes me to go to sleep.
  • 0:31 - 0:39
    >> Like my head is in like a vice grip, and
my heart feels like it's being squeezed.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    >> In small quantities it
works as a motivator I'd say.
  • 0:42 - 0:49
but too much of it and you just get
overwhelmed, and you just shut down.
  • 0:49 - 0:49
    _
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    >> Some ways that I manage my stress
when I have it: try not to use my phone,
  • 0:52 - 0:59
or study for a certain amount of time, and
just focus on living beyond the stresses.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    >> It's really good to have moments
just set aside where it's like,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    "I do this assignment, and
then I take a little break.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    I do this assignment, and
then I take a little break."
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    When you have that schedule,
    it's a lot less disorganized,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
and it's a lot less stressful
    as a result of that.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    >> I talk with other people.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
That's definitely one big thing I do that's
always helped every single time I've done it,
  • 1:19 - 1:19
    basically.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    >> I try to go on nature walks.
  • 1:22 - 1:27
    >> Herbal teas for me have
been, you know, a big, big help.
  • 1:27 - 1:33
And some of the best ones out there are: Lemon
Bomb, Chamomile, Lavender, and scull cap.
  • 1:34 - 1:42
    >> Deep breathing, relaxation, exercise,
you know, oh, playing the guitar.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    Yeah, music.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    Music is a wonder.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    It really works.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    >> The way I've been managing stress, is signing
up for the tai chi classes here on campus.
  • 1:53 - 1:59
I also take adaptive PE, and
working out four days a week here.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    It helps tremendously.
  • 2:02 - 2:09
    >> And you'll know when your mind
says, "Okay, man, I need a break."
  • 2:10 - 2:14
So you take a break and relax your brain
a little bit, and do something different,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
and you come back to your main
goal - what you want to do.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    >> Find time for humor, or watch a funny movie,
call a friend that can always make you laugh,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
or listen to your favorite comedian's podcast.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
Laughing can reduce stress, and is
    an important element of self-care.
  • 2:30 - 2:37
    >> Meditation and mindfulness practices have
been really helpful for clearing my mind
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    of clutter and focusing on
    what's really important.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    >> To call a friend.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    Text a friend.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
Go on a walk with a friend.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
Feel the stress melt away when
    you spend time with others.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
    >> Slow and steady wins the race and when
you think about life and the grander scale
  • 2:53 - 2:55
of what are we all racing towards?
  • 2:55 - 2:57
Well, you know, we're all going to die one day.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
If that's the finish line, then
why, we're not racing to that.
  • 3:01 - 3:07
We need to you know, stop and
smell the roses along the way.
