What makes our life happier? [English Dubbed]: Bo-Hun Kim at TEDxYouth@YCHS

  • 0:33 - 0:44
Hello, everyone. There are many people, wondering
about the order in which we're giving speeches.
  • 0:44 - 0:51
Why eleventh grader, twelfth grader, teacher,
and then twelfth grader? It's not even in
  • 0:51 - 1:01
alphabetic order. Then why is it this way?
My answer is reverse to handsomeness. (laughter)
  • 1:01 - 1:08
My speech's called "What makes our life happier?"
I suggested to a friend of mine, "let's live
  • 1:08 - 1:15
in a fun way." The friend replied, "I'm already
enjoying life. Playing League of Legends is
  • 1:15 - 1:25
fun like nothing else." I asked him how he
felt after the game, on the bus, on the way home.
  • 1:25 - 1:33
    His answer was "somewhat hollow."
My definition of a fun activity is one that you
  • 1:33 - 1:41
keep waiting for before it starts, enjoy during
it, and one that you do not regret after it
  • 1:41 - 1:48
has ended. There are people older than me
listening to the speech, and you may think
  • 1:48 - 1:55
that it's inappropriate that a twelfth grader
is trying to teach them something about life.
  • 1:55 - 2:02
That's like lecturing Confucius on writing,
but please don't take my speech too seriously.
  • 2:02 - 2:11
Mr. Kim Byung-soo taught me (thank you, sir)
that Confucius once said that a man who knows
  • 2:11 - 2:17
cannot be the same as the one who likes, and
the one who likes something is different from
  • 2:17 - 2:25
one who enjoys it. I thought to myself after
hearing this, 'do Korean high school students
  • 2:25 - 2:32
know what they enjoy?' So I stand here to
help out my friends and younger students.
  • 2:32 - 2:41
Sometimes, a harder activity may be more fun
than less exhausting ones. Last year, I led
  • 2:41 - 2:48
the school orchestra and went abroad on a
volunteer project, in the sweltering Philippines.
  • 2:49 - 2:56
But I enjoyed these harder activities. These
    irritating, arduous, and exhausting activities,
  • 2:56 - 3:03
are activities that are fun only to me. If
someone else had been the conductor for the
  • 3:03 - 3:09
orchestra at the last rugby match between
Yangchung High School and Baejae High School
  • 3:09 - 3:16
(one of the current eleventh graders will
be replacing me soon), I ensure you, he will
  • 3:17 - 3:25
hot enjoy it, as they will not follow your
lead easily. But this is the point. People
  • 3:25 - 3:32
differ in activities they enjoy. Everyone
has different hobbies. Some may enjoy listening
  • 3:33 - 3:43
to music, some may enjoy movies more. This
seems like that a fun activity is an activity
  • 3:43 - 3:52
easy to do and easy to remember. What I'm
trying to say here is, what is a truly enjoyable
  • 3:52 - 3:59
activity? A truly enjoyable activity also
acts as a way to express yourself. If you
  • 4:02 - 4:13
say that you enjoy volunteering, you might
be considered an emphatic person, a person
  • 4:13 - 4:22
who likes people. Cooking, playing music,
painting, all ways to express who you are.
  • 4:22 - 4:28
    Why? Why are these activities
    ways to express oneself?
  • 4:28 - 4:43
    This is because these activities
are something only you enjoy in a unique way.
  • 4:43 - 4:52
For some, high school art classes may be the
    last time in their lives that they paint;
  • 4:52 - 4:59
some may abandon cooking because results are
disastrous every time they try. Find something
  • 4:59 - 5:06
you enjoy and develop it. A truly enjoyable
activity acts as your own ideology. Activities
  • 5:09 - 5:16
that are enjoyable, memorable, and not regrettable,
    these become your personality, perks.
  • 5:16 - 5:27
If they ask you in a university interview about your
unique traits, tell them about your own unique activities.
  • 5:27 - 5:35
    Find something you've never tried
before and see if you enjoy it. I told you
  • 5:35 - 5:43
that I went to the Philippines to do volunteer
work? Frankly, it came very unexpectedly to
  • 5:43 - 5:51
me. Before winter vacation, my father suddenly
asked me if I wanted to go. After ten minutes,
  • 5:51 - 5:57
I decided that I would go, and since then,
that activity has been my driving force for
  • 5:57 - 6:06
my volunteer work. Try something - Unexpectedly.
I've been actively volunteering in a lot of
  • 6:06 - 6:12
    occasions. By doing something unintended,
you will acquire a wider view of the world.
  • 6:12 - 6:21
Things you need to keep in mind when trying
to find a new activity: it has to be productive
  • 6:21 - 6:30
and not boring. Firstly, let's ponder about
productivity. Take the example of gaming.
  • 6:30 - 6:39
They're enjoyable, fun, but they ultimately
make you feel hollow in the end because it's
  • 6:39 - 6:47
not productive. It gives you a feeling of
achievement when you do something productive,
  • 6:47 - 6:57
    not bored by the activity itself. The activity;
renewed by itself, feeling better by itself,
  • 6:57 - 7:10
addicted by itself. If you're bored of it,
you don't want to continue, right? The feeling
  • 7:10 - 7:21
achievement allows you to go on. You've tried
and tried, but if it doesn't get better? We've
  • 7:21 - 7:28
now seen how to find good activities. What
if you find them boring after a while? The
  • 7:29 - 7:38
solution, I think, is fusion of fun activities.
I've told you that I'm continuing my volunteering
  • 7:38 - 7:47
work. Then, what am I doing nowadays? I'm
    currently volunteering my musical abilities
  • 7:47 - 7:54
as a part of the orchestra. The fusion of
music and volunteering. It's really fun.
  • 7:54 - 8:05
The communication between people via music gives
me a way of life, feeling of achievement,
  • 8:05 - 8:16
and gratification. If you have two things
you enjoy, fuse them into something better.
  • 8:16 - 8:30
I hope you find a way to fuse activities to
good effect. A warning, though: if you detect
  • 8:30 - 8:44
any adverse effects, destroy the fusion immediately.
One develops an obsession that one must enjoy
  • 8:44 - 8:57
the activity. You may get bored of both activities
and ditch them all. I hope this speech helps
  • 8:57 - 9:03
you in difficult times, thank you for listening.
