The Elements of True Love | Sister Peace

  • 0:01 - 0:07
This is a short meditation on true love, which can be practiced at any time.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
You may like to use it to contemplate on the nature
  • 0:12 - 0:16
and quality of your relationships with your loved ones.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
If you're sitting in a chair, find a comfortable position,
  • 0:23 - 0:27
preferably with both feet flat on the ground.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
Allow your breath to come in and out naturally
  • 0:33 - 0:38
and feel yourself settling in, to the present moment.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
As you listen, continue to be aware of the movement of your breath.
  • 0:46 - 0:54
Your mindful breathing supports your ability to dwell in the present moment and listen deeply,
  • 0:54 - 1:00
allowing the words to penetrate deeply into your consciousness.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
This kind of listening is called deep listening
  • 1:06 - 1:12
and can be very powerful when applied in the context of our relationships.
  • 1:14 - 1:23
As you listen to this contemplation, you are also cultivating your ability to listen deeply without judging
  • 1:23 - 1:31
or reacting in order to be able to offer this kind of listening to your loved ones.
  • 1:34 - 1:43
True love is made of four elements loving kindness, compassion, joy and inclusiveness.
  • 1:45 - 1:52
If your love contains these elements, it will bring healing and transformation to any situation.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
This kind of true love has no boundaries.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
It is a love that continues to grow always.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
This kind of true love is unlimited.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
The first element of true love is loving kindness or friendship.
  • 2:14 - 2:20
And the essence of loving kindness is the ability to offer happiness.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
We become like the sunshine or the fresh air for the other person.
  • 2:26 - 2:32
But in order to offer happiness, you have to have happiness yourself.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
The practice of mindful breathing can help us to generate
  • 2:37 - 2:41
a feeling of happiness whenever we like.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
That way we have something to offer.
  • 2:47 - 2:53
The willingness, the desire to make another person happy is not enough.
  • 2:54 - 3:00
You have to have plenty of good intentions to make him or her happy.
  • 3:01 - 3:07
But if you are not capable of offering happiness, that's not yet true love.
  • 3:09 - 3:18
    [BELL]
  • 3:30 - 3:33
The second element of true love is compassion.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
Compassion is the capacity to understand and embrace
  • 3:39 - 3:43
the suffering in oneself and in the other person.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
When you can understand your own suffering,
  • 3:48 - 3:53
then you can help your beloved to understand his or her suffering.
  • 3:54 - 3:59
Understanding someone suffering is the greatest gift we can offer them.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
Understanding suffering brings relief right away.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
If we cannot offer that kind of compassion to the one we love,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
then it is not yet true love.
  • 4:15 - 4:23
    [BELL]
  • 4:29 - 4:32
The third element of true love is joy.
  • 4:34 - 4:39
If your beloved only makes you cry and you make your beloved cry too,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
then that may not be true love.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
Joy is one of the marks of true love.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
And you can recognize true love by its presence.
  • 4:51 - 4:57
As a true lover, you are able to generate a feeling of joy for yourself,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
as well as offering joy to the other person.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
Our love should bring us joy
  • 5:05 - 5:10
and our love should bring the other person joy too.
  • 5:10 - 5:20
    [BELL]
  • 5:27 - 5:33
The fourth aspect of true love is inclusiveness or nondiscrimination.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
The boundary between you and the other person disappears.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    Your suffering is her suffering.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    Her happiness is your happiness.
  • 5:46 - 5:51
Happiness and suffering are no longer an individual matter.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
The element of inclusiveness or nondiscrimination is telling us
  • 5:57 - 6:02
that true love is the kind of love that always grows.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
There is no limit to true love.
  • 6:06 - 6:12
You may begin with one person, and if your true love continues to grow,
  • 6:12 - 6:15
it will embrace the whole world.
  • 6:16 - 6:26
    [BELL]
  • 6:31 - 6:38
You may like to take a few more minutes sitting in silence, aware of your inbreath
  • 6:38 - 6:44
and outbreath, to meditate on these four elements of true love.
  • 6:45 - 6:52
Loving kindness, compassion, joy and inclusiveness.
  • 6:53 - 7:03
    [BELL]
