For centuries, people living across Africa and Latin America were plagued by the debilitating symptoms of river blindness. In 1987, Merck & Co., Inc. made the unprecedented decision to donate Mectizan— “as much as needed, for as long as needed”—for the elimination of river blindness, becoming the first company in history to make a commitment of this scale. In 1998 the mandate was expanded to include another neglected tropical disease called lymphatic filariasis.
