Blended Learning in Plain English
-
0:00 - 0:02- [Jennifer Faulkner]
You've heard the words -
0:02 - 0:06They say it can increase student
engagement and achievement -
0:06 - 0:09and that it meets our students
needs and learning styles. -
0:09 - 0:13But have you ever wondered
what is blended learning? -
0:13 - 0:15This is Blended Learning In Plain English,
-
0:15 - 0:17inspired by Common Craft.
-
0:17 - 0:19To make sense of blended learning,
-
0:19 - 0:22we must first get an idea of
what blended learning is not. -
0:22 - 0:24Let's look at the revolution of teaching.
-
0:24 - 0:271801: Invention of the blackboard.
-
0:27 - 0:29Read the passage I have
written on the board -
0:29 - 0:32and answer questions one through five.
-
0:32 - 0:351960: Invention of photocopiers.
-
0:35 - 0:37I've run off some worksheets for you.
-
0:37 - 0:40Read the passage and answer
questions one through five. -
0:40 - 0:431985: First computers hit schools.
-
0:43 - 0:46I've used a computer
to create a worksheet. -
0:46 - 0:49Read the passage and answer
questions one through five. -
0:49 - 0:52Now we have even more access to technology
-
0:52 - 0:55from personal laptops,
smartphones, and tablets -
0:55 - 0:57in our hands and those of our students.
-
0:57 - 1:00The use of technology
needs to be harnessed -
1:00 - 1:03in a way that fosters the
inquiry process for students -
1:03 - 1:05and engages them in the learning process
-
1:05 - 1:08that prepares them for a
future that isn't here yet. -
1:08 - 1:11I've created a webquest.
Turn on your computer -
1:11 - 1:13and follow the prompts to find questions
-
1:13 - 1:15one through five and answer them.
-
1:15 - 1:20But wait! If we use technology
like tools in the 1800s, -
1:20 - 1:23has teaching even changed?
-
1:23 - 1:25Have we created conditions for
-
1:25 - 1:28success for our 21st century learners? No!
-
1:29 - 1:31This is not blended learning.
-
1:31 - 1:34This may be substitution
of one tool for another. -
1:34 - 1:38It might be a step in the
direction towards blended learning -
1:38 - 1:40but it's not true blended learning.
-
1:40 - 1:42Blended learning is a mix
of face-to-face teaching, -
1:42 - 1:44or traditional teaching, with the use of
-
1:44 - 1:4821st century tools in
a digital environment. -
1:48 - 1:50The digital environment
allows students who process -
1:50 - 1:54information more quickly
to have access to relevant -
1:54 - 1:57materials immediately,
while exploring and learning -
1:57 - 1:59in a non-linear fashion.
-
1:59 - 2:01The digital environment is called a
-
2:01 - 2:05learning management
system, known as an LMS. -
2:05 - 2:07Learning management systems
allow teachers to create -
2:07 - 2:09virtual classroom space for students
-
2:09 - 2:11to join their learning together.
-
2:11 - 2:13It builds a community of learners.
-
2:13 - 2:17An example LMS is Desire2Learn, or D2L.
-
2:17 - 2:20D2L has the same features
as a physical classroom, -
2:20 - 2:22without the walls and paper.
-
2:22 - 2:27An LMS functions as a classroom
with lessons, discussions, -
2:27 - 2:30Dropbox, grades, quizzes, portfolio,
-
2:30 - 2:34class calendar, locker,
checklists, glossaries, -
2:34 - 2:37any web 2.0 tool you can think of.
-
2:37 - 2:40Web 2.0 tools can enhance a
learning management system -
2:40 - 2:43by expanding the potential
within the learning environment. -
2:43 - 2:45It can allow a student to
demonstrate their learning -
2:45 - 2:48in an alternate form, or medium.
-
2:48 - 2:53Examples of these tools
might be Prezi, Glogster, -
2:53 - 2:57Slideshare, Vuvox, GeoGebra,
LinoIt, VoiceThread, -
2:58 - 3:03Evernote and Dropbox,
Scoop.it! and a multitude -
3:03 - 3:06of Google apps that can be
used for just about anything. -
3:06 - 3:10Think of all the technology
our students have access to. -
3:10 - 3:13Personal laptops, tablets, smartphones,
-
3:13 - 3:15mp3 players, video recorders.
-
3:15 - 3:17As a teacher, how do we use these
-
3:17 - 3:20tools to our students advantage?
-
3:20 - 3:22We use blended learning!
-
3:22 - 3:24We'll meet the students in an
environment they're familiar -
3:24 - 3:27with, help them develop proficiency
with tools they may need -
3:27 - 3:31in the future, and we'll
support their inquire process. -
3:31 - 3:33Blended learning fosters creation,
-
3:33 - 3:37the highest order thinking
skill on Bloom's taxonomy, -
3:37 - 3:40and lends itself to
differentiated instruction. -
3:40 - 3:42Blended learning also
strengthens connections with -
3:42 - 3:45parents, as it makes the
classroom walls more transparent. -
3:45 - 3:47Blended learning is awesome!
-
3:49 - 3:51I'm Jennifer Faulkner, and this has been

- Title:
- Blended Learning in Plain English
- Description:
-
Louder version available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzVeA0hP_Tg
Inspired by Lee LeFever (@leelefever) when he did a talk at RCAC in London Ontario in early December, this video has been a labour of love as many people do not understand Blended Learning and I hope to rectify this.
Blended learning is a powerful change in pedagogy from the chalk and talk method of 'lesson delivery'. Teachers can embrace their inner 'Guide on the Side' instead of the 'Sage on the Stage' and foster inquiry, collaboration, and support the 21st century learner.
