-
0:29 - 0:32How did I get here?
-
0:32 - 0:35Well, it's a stranger story than you might think.
-
0:35 - 0:39I came from a world of drifters,
-
0:39 - 0:42a place few humans have ever seen.
-
0:42 - 0:45The world of plankton.
-
0:45 - 0:49I came from a batch of a million eggs,
-
0:49 - 0:52and only a few of us survived.
-
0:52 - 0:56When I became a larva,
-
0:56 - 0:59I moved among other drifters.
-
0:59 - 1:06"Plankton comes from the Greek planktos for wandering"
-
1:06 - 1:10My fellow plankton came in all sizes,
-
1:10 - 1:13from tiny algae and bacteria
-
1:13 - 1:16to animals longer than a blue whale.
-
1:16 - 1:21I shared my nursery
-
1:21 - 1:24with other embryos and juveniles,
-
1:24 - 1:28from clams and crabs to sea urchins and anemones.
-
1:28 - 1:33(Plankton noise)
-
1:33 - 1:37We drifting animals are called zooplankton.
-
1:37 - 1:40The most common animals here
-
1:40 - 1:43are copepods and krill.
-
1:43 - 1:48You could search the world over,
-
1:48 - 1:51but you'd never find a place more diverse than my childhood home.
-
1:51 - 1:55A teaspoon of seawater
-
1:55 - 1:58can contain more than a million living creatures.
-
1:58 - 2:04It can be a pretty tough existence, though.
-
2:04 - 2:06Trillions are born here,
-
2:06 - 2:09but only a few make it to adulthood.
-
2:09 - 2:16He may be no larger than a pin head,
-
2:16 - 2:20but this crab larva is an arrow worm's worst nightmare.
-
2:20 - 2:35(Plankton noises)
-
2:35 - 2:40Epic battles between carnivores like these are just one way to get food.
-
2:40 - 2:45But the real powers of this place come from phytoplankton:
-
2:45 - 2:48single-celled life
-
2:48 - 2:51that transforms sunlight and carbon dioxide into
-
2:51 - 2:54edible gold.
-
2:59 - 3:04Phytoplankton are the base for the largest food web in the world.
-
3:04 - 3:08During the night,
-
3:08 - 3:11many animals like me would rise up from the depths
-
3:11 - 3:14to feed on this sun-powered feast.
-
3:14 - 3:18(Plankton noises)
-
3:18 - 3:22I was part of the largest daily migration of life on Earth.
-
3:22 - 3:26During the day,
-
3:26 - 3:30I'd return to the darkness, where I'd join my bizarre companions.
-
3:30 - 3:35(Plankton noises)
-
3:35 - 3:38Cannibals, like this sea butterfly mollusk,
-
3:38 - 3:41that eats its next of kin.
-
3:41 - 3:46And comb jellies,
-
3:46 - 3:49that beat cilia like rainbowed eyelashes.
-
3:55 - 3:58Some of these snare their prey with sticky tentacles,
-
3:58 - 4:02while others just take a bite out of their cousins.
-
4:02 - 4:06And siphonophores
-
4:06 - 4:09that catch prey with toxic fishing lures.
-
4:15 - 4:18But my favorite would have to be the crustacean Phronima;
-
4:18 - 4:23its monstrous looks inspired the movie "Aliens."
-
4:23 - 4:27It can catch tiny bits in its bristles,
-
4:27 - 4:30but prefers larger prey like salps.
-
4:34 - 4:38With two sets of eyes, this female prowls the deeper water.
-
4:38 - 4:42Prey in hand,
-
4:42 - 4:47she performs one of the strangest behaviors in the entire animal kingdom.
-
4:47 - 4:53With body parts from her victims,
-
4:53 - 4:56she delicately assembles a barrel-like home
-
4:56 - 5:00feeding her young until they can drift off and survive on their own.
-
5:04 - 5:09Best of all, they make the perfect snack for a small fish like me.
-
5:12 - 5:14Here among the plankton,
-
5:14 - 5:17the food web is so tangled and complex,
-
5:17 - 5:21even scientists don't know who eats whom.
-
5:21 - 5:25But I do.
-
5:28 - 5:31At least now you know a bit of my story.
-
5:33 - 5:35There's so much more to me than just a tasty meal.

- The Secret Life of Plankton
- Speaker:
- Tierney Thys and Plankton Chronicles Project
- Description:
-
New videography techniques have opened up the oceans' microscopic ecosystem, revealing it to be both mesmerizingly beautiful and astoundingly complex. Marine biologist Tierney Thys has used footage from a pioneering project to create a film designed to ignite wonder and curiosity about this hidden world that underpins our own food chain.
