What to Do When Your Thought Life is Attacked - Don Johnson

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    There's no such thing.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
I asked someone one time -
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    they carry a Bible on
    the dash in the car.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
I asked them why they did that.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
What was the purpose of it?
  • 0:10 - 0:12
He said that keeps away the devil.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
Well, I haven't found that to work.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
Of course, I keep a Bible handy.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
I'm just saying that all these charms
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    and formulas and legalistic works
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    are useless, worthless,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
in the battle of the mind.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    What are the mighty
    weapons of our warfare?
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    If they are weapons
  • 0:34 - 0:36
and if we're urged to use
    them, what are they?
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    Listen.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Ugly, silly thoughts that exalt themselves
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    against the knowledge of God
  • 0:42 - 0:47
can only be answered and defeated
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    by sound and true knowledge
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    of the Word of God.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
You know what will knock down a lie?
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    The truth.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    And that's the great
    example our Lord gave us.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    Jesus Himself used this example
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    for our benefit.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    When assailed by Satan,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    tempted at all points,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    He simply remedied the
    situation of the temptation
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    by quoting Scripture.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
Keep your nose in the Bible!
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Store up the Word of God in your heart!
  • 1:26 - 1:29
The more you hide in your
    heart the Word of God,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
the less you will sin against God.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
The more you have of the Word of God
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    in your mind,
  • 1:37 - 1:42
the less room there will be for Satan
  • 1:42 - 1:45
to put other things in your mind
  • 1:45 - 1:51
    and fill your heart with
    foolish sinful suggestions.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
So the more you know God's Word,
  • 1:52 - 1:55
the more you can use it to counter
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    these contrary thoughts and suggestions
  • 1:57 - 2:01
that exalt the idea or the notion
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    of something that is foolish,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
that is contrary to the will of God.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
Sinful thought says: it would be fun.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
It would be good to believe this.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
You would be more in tune with the age.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
You would be more up to date.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    That's a lie.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    And you counter those
things with the Word of God.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    But then there's something else.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
We thank God for the Scriptures don't we?
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    All Scriptures are given
    by inspiration of God
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    and are profitable.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    And I find that one
    of the greatest profits
  • 2:30 - 2:32
of the Word of God and
of having it in your heart
  • 2:32 - 2:34
is the use of the Word of God
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    against foul and obnoxious thinking.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    But there's something more.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    Sometimes we are assailed
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    with a particularly strong
    temptation in our mind,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    and in a moment's time,
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    a whole lot of time,
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    the Bible knowledge has
    a way of evaporating.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
Have you ever been in that place?
  • 2:55 - 2:58
I can remember a few years ago,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
I was on my lawn mower
  • 2:59 - 3:02
and a particular temptation came upon me
  • 3:02 - 3:04
and it's almost like I forgot everything
  • 3:04 - 3:08
that I had ever read in the Scriptures.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    I just went blank.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
It seemed like I couldn't quote anything.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    Nothing.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    Nothing came out.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
Well, what do you do in such occasions?
  • 3:17 - 3:23
    Then you must engage
    Jesus Christ in the battle.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
How do you do that? Call on Him.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    Pray.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
Call upon the Lord in the day of trouble.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    Pray fervently.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
Bring your mind into the presence of God.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
Show up at the throne of grace.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
Get that mercy and help that you need
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    in a time of need.
  • 3:42 - 3:43
And when your mind is under assault,
  • 3:43 - 3:46
it is an hour of need.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    Praying always with all prayer
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    and supplication in the Spirit.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
Our God is a God of help!
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    He's not against us
    in this thing, beloved.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    He's for us!
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    He's a help. A very present help.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
Call upon Him when you're struggling.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    Call upon Him when the
    bad thoughts attack you.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
Call upon Him when the lies
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    are insidious and high
    and lofty and clever.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    Call upon the Lord.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
Call upon Me and I will answer thee
  • 4:18 - 4:21
and show thee great and mighty things
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    that thou knowest not.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    There's help for those
  • 4:25 - 4:27
who earnestly cry out for it.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    God likes us showing up
    at the throne of grace.
