Pressed Flowers | ASMR Summer Tutorial (cottagecore DIY, soft spoken)

  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Good evening,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
and welcome to this new tutorial video.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
It is summer here in France
  • 0:57 - 1:01
and I wanted to make something a bit colorful
  • 1:01 - 1:03
so tonight I will show you
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    how to press flowers
  • 1:05 - 1:08
and how to use them to make
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    DIY / decorative objetcs.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
It is a very relaxing activity
  • 1:16 - 1:20
and you can do it with a child as well.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
So first let's have a look at what we will need
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    and as you will see
  • 1:28 - 1:30
it doesn't require a lot of tools.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    Twizzers,
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    scissors,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    a couple of brushes,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
things you usually have around your home.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    Thick paper or newspaper sheets
  • 1:49 - 1:52
and a few pieces of cardboard.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
And of course something to press the flowers.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
So I have a few presses here,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    2 I bought
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    and 1 I made myself,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    using 2 wooden boards
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    and a few screws.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
It cost me about 5 euros.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    And if you don't have
  • 2:20 - 2:22
or if you don't want to make a press.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
You can simply use a heavy book
  • 2:25 - 2:28
like "The lord of the rings" (JRR Tolkien)
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    or "Middlemarch" (G. Eliot).
  • 2:30 - 2:33
But I really like the look
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    of a hand crafted press.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    These are such beautiful items.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
So this one is full of flowers
  • 2:43 - 2:46
I put in about 2 weeks ago.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    Quite large,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    and so beautiful.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    We can read "herbarium".
  • 3:17 - 3:20
And this one is empty right now,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
we're going to use it in a moment.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
And when buying it there was an option
  • 3:29 - 3:32
for a custom phrase or name on it,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
and I chose the very first lines
  • 3:35 - 3:37
of one of my favorite poems,
  • 3:37 - 3:41
"The lady of Shalott" by Alfred Tennyson.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
"On either side the river lie
  • 3:46 - 3:48
long fields of barley and of rye
  • 3:49 - 3:53
that clothe the wold and meet the sky".
  • 3:53 - 3:57
So now I call it the Shalott press.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
And of course we are going to need
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    fresh flowers.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
So these come from my garden
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    and my neighbour's garden.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
And since we had a very unusual heatwave here
  • 4:25 - 4:28
there are not as many as I hoped
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    but that should do.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
So let's have a look at what we have here
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    which ones are my favorites
  • 4:41 - 4:44
and which ones may be the best for pressing.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
So the best flowers to start with
  • 4:55 - 4:58
are usually the flat faced flowers
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    such as hydrangea.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
If it can be found in your area.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    They are naturally quite flat
  • 5:08 - 5:11
and are so beautiful when dried.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
Very easy to put in a press
  • 5:14 - 5:17
or between 2 pages of a book.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
And these come in various colors
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    like blue,
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    pink,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    white,
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    purple,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    and sometimes almost black.
  • 5:44 - 5:48
These are some of my favorites as well :
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    nigellas, also known as
  • 5:52 - 5:56
    "love-in-a-mist", what a romantic name.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
Unfortunately they are very very very small
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    because as I said
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    most of the flowers died,
  • 6:06 - 6:10
so I could only find tiny ones.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    What else...
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    These are larger :
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    cosmos.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    Very classic.
  • 6:36 - 6:40
Another classic one and easy to find is
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    rose.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
So here I have rose petals.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
You can dry the whole flower
  • 6:49 - 6:51
but it's not an easy one
  • 6:51 - 6:54
and I haven't tried it yet.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    What else...
  • 6:59 - 7:02
I tried to mostly pick flowers
  • 7:02 - 7:06
that are similar to those that are in the press here.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
So you can see the result.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    Geranium.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
And of course you can also press leaves :
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    herb robert,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    I have fern and
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    perovskia as well.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    There it is.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
    So this is perovskia,
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    also known as russian sage
  • 7:53 - 7:56
but in french we call it "sauge d'Afghanistan",
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    so Afghanistan's sage.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
So let's not wait too long
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    because we need these
  • 8:10 - 8:12
to stay as fresh as possible.
  • 8:13 - 8:19
So I'm going to use this square press.
  • 8:23 - 8:26
And I'm going to remove the wing nuts
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    and the washers.
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    Washers are optional
  • 8:33 - 8:36
but if you have soft wood like this
  • 8:37 - 8:41
it will prevent the nut from damaging it.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
And here is an important point :
  • 8:55 - 8:58
always have the screws already set
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    in the lower part
  • 9:00 - 9:03
when you put the different layers of flowers
  • 9:03 - 9:07
so you just have to put the upper part
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    when you're finished.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
If you try to put the screws at the end
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    it might be difficult.
  • 9:16 - 9:21
So in the press we have cardboard
  • 9:21 - 9:25
and some kind of blotting paper
  • 9:26 - 9:28
but if you don't have blotting paper
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    newspaper sheets will do.
  • 9:31 - 9:34
Same if you're using a book.
  • 9:37 - 9:41
    This is plain cardboard.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
It doesn't have to be thick
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    but rigid enough.
  • 9:47 - 9:51
So I have 3 layers here
  • 9:52 - 9:55
but you can add as many as you'd like
  • 9:55 - 9:59
as long as your screws are long enough.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    So let's start with
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    the thinest ones :
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    leaves.
  • 10:18 - 10:23
And always try to put flowers of similar thickness
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    on each layer
  • 10:25 - 10:27
    to ensure that each flower
  • 10:27 - 10:29
    is pressed equally.
  • 10:33 - 10:35
    Perovskia,
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    Male fern.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    Let's cut this.
  • 11:17 - 11:18
    Alright.
  • 11:20 - 11:25
Let's put the second sheet of paper
  • 11:25 - 11:29
    and a piece of cardboard.
  • 11:31 - 11:34
And now we can do the second layer.
  • 11:37 - 11:40
    So, sheet of paper
  • 11:40 - 11:44
    and I'm going to put
  • 11:46 - 11:48
    the hydrangeas.
  • 12:07 - 12:11
    So first, blue ones.
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    And...
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    Some pink.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
    Alright.
  • 12:28 - 12:32
    Now let's put geraniums,
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    with a very bright color.
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    And...
  • 12:50 - 12:52
    Rose petals.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    Very bright color as well.
  • 13:03 - 13:07
And this is our second layer.
  • 13:19 - 13:21
    Alright.
  • 13:26 - 13:30
And let's take care of the last one.
  • 13:35 - 13:37
    So
  • 13:37 - 13:40
    let's use the tiny nigellas.
  • 13:44 - 13:46
So this one a bit tricky
  • 13:46 - 13:49
because the heart of the flower
  • 13:49 - 13:53
is quite intricate and very thick
  • 13:54 - 13:55
so what I'm going to do
  • 13:57 - 14:01
    is to cut the center.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
Do it slowly, take your time.
  • 14:08 - 14:13
And try to keep the flower as beautiful as possible.
  • 14:21 - 14:23
    There.
  • 14:24 - 14:27
And now it will be easier.
  • 14:45 - 14:50
    So, another thick one... Cosmos.
  • 14:56 - 15:01
So I'm going to keep the flower only.
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    And...
  • 15:24 - 15:26
    Another one.
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    And let's finish with
  • 15:43 - 15:48
    a beautiful one : agapanthus.
  • 15:50 - 15:53
A bit thick as well so
  • 15:55 - 15:58
it will be perfect for this third layer.
  • 16:02 - 16:03
    Alright.
  • 16:03 - 16:04
    Perfect.
  • 16:32 - 16:33
    And now it is time
  • 16:33 - 16:36
to press all these little treasures.
  • 16:41 - 16:44
So I'm going to put back the upper part
  • 16:48 - 16:52
the washers and the wing nuts.
  • 17:03 - 17:06
And if there are thick flowers
  • 17:06 - 17:09
try to tighten the screws a bit more
  • 17:09 - 17:11
    1 or 2 days later
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    when the flowers have already
  • 17:15 - 17:18
started to dry and lost volume
  • 17:18 - 17:22
so they will remain properly pressed.
  • 17:26 - 17:29
And now we are going to wait
  • 17:29 - 17:32
    2 to 3 weeks,
  • 17:33 - 17:35
    nothing more to do.
  • 17:40 - 17:41
    Right.
  • 17:46 - 17:49
And now we are going to have a look
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    at the pressed flowers
  • 17:55 - 17:58
    I made 20 days ago.
  • 18:02 - 18:04
    This is exciting.
  • 18:08 - 18:09
    Alright.
  • 18:10 - 18:13
    Reveal time.
  • 18:24 - 18:26
    So, let' see...
  • 18:46 - 18:48
    Alright.
  • 18:48 - 18:52
I put a fern on the top of the layers.
  • 18:54 - 18:57
As you can see, I don't know if you see it
  • 18:58 - 19:00
    there's a bit of powder
  • 19:00 - 19:02
    because of the spores.
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    This is male fern.
  • 19:08 - 19:10
    And it dried beautifully.
  • 19:20 - 19:22
    That's great.
  • 19:30 - 19:33
So let's see the first layer.
  • 19:36 - 19:38
    That's beautiful.
  • 19:42 - 19:46
I'm going to put them on the paper here.
  • 19:48 - 19:52
So here we have rose petals,
  • 19:56 - 19:58
    very delicate.
  • 20:08 - 20:09
    And
  • 20:12 - 20:14
    for the most fragile ones
  • 20:15 - 20:18
you can use a small brush
  • 20:18 - 20:18
    and
  • 20:23 - 20:27
gently remove it from the paper.
  • 20:35 - 20:38
    Just like this.
  • 20:41 - 20:43
So you won't damage the flower.
  • 20:52 - 20:53
    Alright.
  • 21:07 - 21:12
So these are geraniums and hydrangeas.
  • 21:21 - 21:22
    Alright.
  • 21:24 - 21:26
Let's put them on the paper.
  • 21:27 - 21:30
They all kept their color here
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    and that's great
  • 21:32 - 21:34
but some may have lost their color
  • 21:34 - 21:36
    we will see
  • 21:36 - 21:38
    and it's ok, it happens.
  • 21:42 - 21:48
These turned out a bit paler.
  • 21:49 - 21:52
    So second layer.
  • 22:01 - 22:03
    Oh no.
  • 22:05 - 22:09
So, this kind of thing can happen sometimes.
  • 22:17 - 22:19
This cosmos is not going to be
  • 22:19 - 22:21
    easy to remove.
  • 22:45 - 22:49
    Alright, it's very very delicate,
  • 22:53 - 22:55
    but it's so beautiful.
  • 23:03 - 23:08
This one is smaller, let's use the brush.
  • 23:21 - 23:22
    Perfect.
  • 23:26 - 23:28
    I love it,
  • 23:29 - 23:31
    beautiful.
  • 23:33 - 23:36
And this is a maple leaf,
  • 23:37 - 23:39
    very easy to press.
  • 23:48 - 23:50
    So, the next layer...
  • 23:57 - 23:59
    with leaves.
  • 24:02 - 24:05
    So these are cosmos leaves
  • 24:05 - 24:08
    and this is perovskia.
  • 24:23 - 24:25
    Almost like lace,
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    this is cute.
  • 24:33 - 24:36
    When dried it's very breakable
  • 24:36 - 24:39
so be very gentle when you remove them
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    from the paper.
  • 24:41 - 24:45
    And finally, last layer.
  • 24:53 - 24:56
    Oh this is so beautiful.
  • 24:57 - 25:00
    So these are nigellas,
  • 25:01 - 25:04
    this is the normal size.
  • 25:07 - 25:10
    This is so beautiful.
  • 25:13 - 25:16
    I'm so happy with them.
  • 25:38 - 25:40
    Alright, that's great.
  • 25:56 - 25:58
    And now with these
  • 25:58 - 26:01
I'm going to make a bookmark
  • 26:01 - 26:04
which is probably the easiest DIY
  • 26:04 - 26:06
    to start with
  • 26:06 - 26:07
    because bookmarks are usually
  • 26:07 - 26:10
    kept in books
  • 26:10 - 26:13
so your flowers will stay in shape.
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    For that I will use
  • 26:19 - 26:21
    cardboard paper
  • 26:21 - 26:24
    that I've previously decorated.
  • 26:27 - 26:31
I'm going to use a brush like...
  • 26:34 - 26:36
    this one.
  • 26:38 - 26:42
And some kind of water based
  • 26:42 - 26:44
    napkin glue ?
  • 26:44 - 26:48
I'm not sure this is the word in english.
  • 26:48 - 26:49
    So
  • 26:49 - 26:51
you can make one at home as well
  • 26:51 - 26:53
    with flour and water
  • 26:54 - 26:56
I will leave the recipe in the decription
  • 26:56 - 27:00
but for this I wanted a brighter finish.
  • 27:16 - 27:19
So here I have linen paper
  • 27:19 - 27:21
but it's a bit too thick.
  • 27:26 - 27:30
And 2 pieces of cardboard paper
  • 27:30 - 27:33
one with cotton paper on it
  • 27:34 - 27:38
and this one with cotton paper flakes.
  • 27:40 - 27:43
I like it but my husband finds it...
  • 27:45 - 27:46
    weird ?
  • 27:48 - 27:50
I'm going to use this one.
  • 27:53 - 27:57
And be sure it's water resistant
  • 27:58 - 27:59
    or else it will warp
  • 27:59 - 28:02
    when applying the glue.
  • 28:04 - 28:07
So now this is the funniest part
  • 28:07 - 28:11
I'm going to arrrange the flowers
  • 28:11 - 28:12
    and leaves
  • 28:12 - 28:14
    on the bookmark
  • 28:14 - 28:16
until I'm happy with the pattern.
  • 28:18 - 28:20
    So let's start.
  • 29:00 - 29:01
    Let's see...
  • 29:12 - 29:14
    I don't know
  • 29:14 - 29:17
I think just one nigella is nice.
  • 29:17 - 29:18
    It's elegant.
  • 29:27 - 29:29
But I can add a bit of red
  • 29:33 - 29:35
    to stand out.
  • 30:02 - 30:05
    Let's try something else.
  • 30:32 - 30:34
    This is nice as well.
  • 30:40 - 30:42
    What else could we make..?
  • 30:53 - 30:56
    With a cosmos maybe.
  • 31:36 - 31:38
    Everything looks nice
  • 31:38 - 31:40
so I will just have to decide.
  • 31:59 - 32:01
    Maybe with leaves.
  • 32:13 - 32:16
    And cosmos leaves.
  • 32:33 - 32:36
Alright, I think my favorite version is
  • 32:36 - 32:38
    with the nigella only.
  • 32:39 - 32:42
And I will use the others
  • 32:42 - 32:45
    for more bookmarks
  • 32:45 - 32:48
    or maybe candles.
  • 33:05 - 33:07
This one is a bit smaller so
  • 33:09 - 33:11
    may be better.
  • 33:15 - 33:16
    Yes.
  • 33:18 - 33:21
I'm going to keep it simple.
  • 33:34 - 33:37
And now I'm going to glue the flower.
  • 33:38 - 33:42
And this is where you want to be gentle.
  • 33:45 - 33:48
You can use a small stick like this.
  • 33:55 - 33:56
    Here we go.
  • 34:16 - 34:18
    It is white right now
  • 34:18 - 34:20
    but it will dry clear.
  • 34:39 - 34:41
    Alright.
  • 34:44 - 34:47
I'm going to gently press with my finger.
  • 34:53 - 34:55
    And then I will cut
  • 34:55 - 34:57
    what's not on the bookmark.
  • 35:17 - 35:19
    And I'm going to apply
  • 35:19 - 35:22
    a final layer of glue
  • 35:22 - 35:25
    on all of the bookmark
  • 35:25 - 35:27
    to secure the flower.
  • 35:28 - 35:31
You can also laminate it if you want
  • 35:31 - 35:33
    with a specific tool.
  • 35:33 - 35:38
And that will preserve the flowers much longer
  • 35:38 - 35:40
but I don't have this kind of machine
  • 35:40 - 35:44
and I am not very fond of plastic so...
  • 35:48 - 35:50
    Here we go.
  • 35:53 - 35:54
    Again, don't worry,
  • 35:54 - 35:56
    it will dry clear.
  • 37:24 - 37:25
    Alright.
  • 37:28 - 37:31
So now allow it to dry for a few minutes.
  • 38:47 - 38:48
    And there it is.
  • 38:50 - 38:53
    I'm quite happy with it.
  • 38:53 - 38:55
I will put it in the book
  • 38:55 - 38:57
    I'm currently reading
  • 38:57 - 38:59
which is a fairy tales book
  • 38:59 - 39:02
    from the 17th century.
  • 39:03 - 39:05
    You can apply this method
  • 39:05 - 39:07
    on other items like
  • 39:07 - 39:10
    postcards, candles,
  • 39:10 - 39:13
    these are great gift ideas.
  • 39:14 - 39:17
And you can put pressed flowers
  • 39:17 - 39:18
    on food as well
  • 39:18 - 39:21
    like cakes or biscuits,
  • 39:21 - 39:23
but just be sure you're using
  • 39:23 - 39:25
    edible flowers
  • 39:25 - 39:27
    and sugar instead of glue.
  • 39:29 - 39:32
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial
  • 39:32 - 39:34
    and as always
  • 39:34 - 39:38
I wish you a very good night.
