Rodrigo Santoro Had to Wax His Entire Body to Play Xerxes in 300

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Welcome to the show.
    Thank you.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
I'm so happy to have you.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
I feel like you're one of those
    actors that people recognize
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    from many different things
    over the years.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    But we're coming up
    on the Christmas season,
  • 0:11 - 0:12
and I feel as though -
  • 0:12 - 0:14
You have a role in a film,
    "Love Actually,"
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    where you played Karl,
    Laura Linney's love interest.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    That's right.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Is this still a role
    that you're asked about?
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Oh, yeah, man, yeah.
    I mean, they play -
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Every Christmas,
    this film is on TV.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    Yeah.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    I think people
    really love the film.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    I mean, not so much
the way our story line ended.
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    Yeah.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    I do get some interesting
    feedback sometimes.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
Because it's one of the sad-
    It ends sadly.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Yeah. It does.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
People wanted you guys to end
    up together, and you didn't.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    And I think that - I think
  • 0:45 - 0:47
most guys want to end up
    like that.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    Just, like, looking -
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    Just looking like that
    in general.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    Yeah, I had this -
  • 0:52 - 0:53
You know, I was at the airport
    the other day,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
and this lady came to me
    and say,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
"Are you that guy with the
    glasses on Love Actually'?"
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    I'm like, "Yeah.
    Yeah, yeah, that's me."
  • 1:00 - 1:03
She was like, "Could you give me
    Laura Linney's phone number?"
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    And I go like, "Well, I don't
    think that's appropriate."
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    She goes like, "I don't
    understand why she dumped you.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
I need to talk to her about it."
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    Really?
    And I'm like, "Well,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
you should talk to the writer,
    ask for a sequel.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Maybe we can, you know,
    work it out."
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Absolutely. It seems very
strange to get a phone call
  • 1:18 - 1:19
20 years later about a choice
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    a fictional character
    made in a movie.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    I agree. I agree.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
You - Another role that you
    were almost unrecognizable in
  • 1:25 - 1:27
is - You played, in "300,"
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    basically a nine-foot
    god king, Xerxes.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    That's you.
    Not recognizable at all.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    Yeah.
    There was an intense,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    obviously,
    workout regime to this.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Also a good deal of grooming.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Oh, man. All right.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    Okay. Let's get into that.
    Yeah.
  • 1:42 - 1:47
    Yeah. Nine feet tall,
    hairless, god king.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Yeah.
    The lord of the lords.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Now, the trick -
    Thank you very much.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    I appreciate it. Yes.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    Everything was challenging
    about playing this part,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    but there was one
    very tricky thing
  • 1:58 - 2:00
that was in the word "hairless."
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    Yeah.
I had to wax my whole body.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    Really? The whole body?
    Head to toe?
  • 2:04 - 2:08
Yes. So, I went to this hair
    place. I mean, waxing place.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    And this very lovely lady
    came to me and said,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
"Would you like hot or cold?"
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    I like, "Hot."
Yeah, I would have picked hot.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    You would?
    Yeah.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    Have you waxed before?
    No.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    Okay.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    This all just happens
    on its own.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    All right.
    You're just born like that.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    That's perfect.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
So, she picked up that hot thing
and just splat on my chest.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    And I'm like,
    "Is that going to hurt?"
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    And she rips. Wah!
    I'm like, "Aah! Ah!"
  • 2:35 - 2:38
And then she goes - She grabs
    the towel and go, "Bite,"
  • 2:38 - 2:40
and put it in my mouth.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    And I'm crying. Miserable.
    Like, crying. It's so painful.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    You know that movie
    "40-Year-Old Virgin"?
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    Yeah, sure.
    I'm Steve Carell.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
Yeah, that was the real deal.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    That was the moment.
    Absolutely.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
So it was the first and
the last time I waxed my body.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
I went back to the makeup
    department and said,
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    "Guys, give me a razor.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
I would like to proceed that way
    from now on."
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Also, that movie famously
    had so much CGI.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
It seems like a bummer they
couldn't have figured out a way
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    to just, like, digitally
    get rid of your hair.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    That would be awesome.
Yeah, that - Moving forward -
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    In "Reprisal,"
you get to grow out a beard.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    That must have been
    one of the things that
    drew you to the part.
  • 3:11 - 3:16
    Yeah, it took me
three months to grow that beard.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    I've got to tell -
    Have you ever had -
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    No, I really haven't
    and nor could I. Yeah.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
Okay. I'll tell you one thing.
    It's high-maintenance.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
You have to take care of it.
    It's a lot of work.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
It was appropriate for the part.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    Sure.
    I thought, why not?
  • 3:32 - 3:33
But then it's just, you know,
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    you scratch your beard, and
then you find stuff in there.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
It's like, "When did I have
    nachos? What is it?"
  • 3:39 - 3:42
And then, you know, that's why
you have to take care of it.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
You have to wash it and -
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    My daughter really loved
    that long beard.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    She did?
    She did.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    She would stick crayons inside.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    That's so lovely.
    Like, a lot of things.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
Like a memory book for her.
    Yeah, yeah.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Like her private basket.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    Which was, you know -
    It was a fun part.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    There's action in this show,
    as well.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    I know - I heard
    you hurt your finger.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    I did, man. I hurt my -
    Well, my middle finger.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
Yeah. That's okay. If it's an
    injury, they can't sensor it.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    That's just - Legally.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    This one. Okay.
    Sorry about that.
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    I didn't mean it.
    How did you do it?
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    We were rehearsing,
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    and then I just hit
    this other guy's hand.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    Uh-huh.
It was the last - final week
  • 4:21 - 4:23
of shooting, and I had to
    perform some stuff.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    It was challenging.
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    But the most challenging thing
    was actually outside of work,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
because then I went to the
doctor and he gave me a splint.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    So I put a splint,
    and the splint
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    was very discreet,
    like, skin-colored.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    Uh-huh.
A little piece like a ring
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    that would keep my finger
    up like this.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    So I said,
"So, what can I do, Doctor?"
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    He says, "Whatever you want.
Just do not bend that finger."
  • 4:45 - 4:49
    I'm like, "Okay."
So I went out with my wife.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
We were having, you know, sushi,
    and I'm going like this.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    And then I'm looking around,
    and people are going -
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    That's when I learned
I have to use the left hand.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
I started to use the left hand.
    Yeah.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
Then I went to the gym
    the next day.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    And I'm doing -
    working on my biceps -
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    You know, like,
    just going like this.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
And then I look across the room,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
and this guy is staring at me,
    like, really, really mad.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    And I'm like, "Oh, man.
I guess I got to explain."
  • 5:12 - 5:14
So I come to him and say,
    "Hey, I just broke..."
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    "What?! Why you
    giving the finger for?!"
  • 5:17 - 5:19
I'm like, "Dude, it is broken.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    My finger is broken.
    I'm so sorry."
  • 5:21 - 5:23
It took him like a week
    to get over it
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    and, you know,
    really calm down.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    This is the side effects
    of film work
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    that nobody tells you when
    you get into the business.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    Yeah, we take it home.
    You take it home.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    You take the trauma home
    with you.
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    We do. We do.
    Well, congrats on the show.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
Thanks so much for being here.
    I really appreciate it.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    Rodrigo Santoro,
