The Panama Papers exposed a huge global problem. What's next?

  • Not Synced
    This week, there have been
a whole slew and deluge of stories
  • Not Synced
    coming out form the leak
    of 11 million documents
  • Not Synced
    from a Panamanian-based law firm
    called Mossack Fonseca.
  • Not Synced
    The release of these papers
    from Panama
  • Not Synced
lifts the veil on a tiny piece
    of the secretive offshore world.
  • Not Synced
We get an insight into how
    clients and banks and lawyers
  • Not Synced
go to companies like Mossack Fonseca
  • Not Synced
    and say, "Okay, we want
    an anonymous company,
  • Not Synced
    can you give us one?"
  • Not Synced
So you actually get to see the emails,
  • Not Synced
you get to see the exchanges
    of messages,
  • Not Synced
you get to see the mechanics
    of how this works,
  • Not Synced
    how this operates.
  • Not Synced
    Now this has already started
    to have
  • Not Synced
    pretty immediate repercussions.
  • Not Synced
    The Prime Minister of
    Iceland has resigned.
  • Not Synced
We've also heard news that an ally
  • Not Synced
    of the brutal Syrian dictator
    Bashar al-Assad
  • Not Synced
    has also got offshore companies.
  • Not Synced
    There's been allegations
    of a 2 billion-dollar money trail
  • Not Synced
    that leads back to
    President Vladimir Putin of Russia
  • Not Synced
    via his close childhood friend
  • Not Synced
who happens to be a top cellist.
  • Not Synced
And there will be a lot
    of rich individuals our there
  • Not Synced
and other who will be nervous
about the next set of stories
  • Not Synced
and the next set of leaked documents.
  • Not Synced
Now, this sounds like the plot
    of a spy thriller
  • Not Synced
    or a John Grisham novel.
  • Not Synced
    It seemed very distant from
    you and me ordinary people.
  • Not Synced
Why should we care about this?
  • Not Synced
But the truth is that if rich
    and powerful individuals
  • Not Synced
are able to keep their money offshore
  • Not Synced
and not pay the taxes that they should,
  • Not Synced
it means that there is less money
    for vital public services
  • Not Synced
    like healthcare, education, roads,
  • Not Synced
and that affects all of us.
  • Not Synced
Now for my organization Global Witness,
  • Not Synced
    this exposé has been phenomenal.
  • Not Synced
    We have the world's media
    and political leaders
  • Not Synced
talking about how individuals can use
    offshore secrecy
  • Not Synced
to hide and disguise their assets,
  • Not Synced
something we have been talking about
    and exposing for a decade.
