Can you solve the multiverse rescue mission riddle? - Dan Finkel

  • Not Synced
    It was a normal Tuesday
    at the superconductor,
  • Not Synced
until a bug in the system created
    a small situation.
  • Not Synced
Now your team is trapped in eleven
    separate pocket dimensions.
  • Not Synced
    Luckily for you, there’s a half-finished
    experimental teleportation robot
  • Not Synced
that may be able to get you all home,
  • Not Synced
if you can figure out how to work through
    the quirks of its design.
  • Not Synced
    Over interdimensional radio,
  • Not Synced
your engineers explain that the robot
    can teleport
  • Not Synced
    into the alternate universes
    you’re trapped in,
  • Not Synced
but it’ll do so completely at random.
  • Not Synced
    The robot has two levers
    and one big button.
  • Not Synced
    When it appears,
  • Not Synced
you just switch the position of one
of the levers from A to B or vice versa,
  • Not Synced
and then the robot will note your
    dimensional position
  • Not Synced
and teleport to another of the eleven
    dimensions at random.
  • Not Synced
If it shows up again, you’ll have to pull
a lever before it’ll teleport away.
  • Not Synced
    When anyone presses the button,
  • Not Synced
the robot will bring everyone who pulled
    a lever back home.
  • Not Synced
Anyone who didn’t will be lost
    in the multi-verse forever.
  • Not Synced
The challenge is to make sure everyone
    has pulled a lever
  • Not Synced
    before anyone hits the button.
  • Not Synced
While you can talk to each other now
    over the interdimensional radio
  • Not Synced
    and agree on a plan,
  • Not Synced
    the robot’s teleportation technology
  • Not Synced
    will interfere with all attempts
    at communication once it arrives.
  • Not Synced
You won’t be able to attach messages
to the robot or scratch notes
  • Not Synced
    into its superstrong alloy body.
  • Not Synced
Your only way to communicate information
    is to change the position
  • Not Synced
of exactly one lever or hit the button.
  • Not Synced
    What plan will make sure
    everyone gets home?
  • Not Synced
It would be nice if you could set
    different combinations of the levers
  • Not Synced
    to indicate who’s already
    been visited by the robot.
  • Not Synced
But it has only two levers.
  • Not Synced
    That gives four combinations—
  • Not Synced
    far too few to communicate
    about 11 people,
  • Not Synced
especially when you’re forced to flip
one to send the robot onward.
  • Not Synced
    There must be another way.
  • Not Synced
    The critical insight is that
  • Not Synced
not everyone has to know when every pocket
    dimension has been visited.
  • Not Synced
    If one person accepts responsibility
ahead of time for hitting the button,
  • Not Synced
then only they need to know who the robot
    has visited.
  • Not Synced
In fact, they don’t even need to know
    exactly who’s been visited…
  • Not Synced
just how many people have been.
  • Not Synced
You volunteer to be the person in charge
    of pressing the button
  • Not Synced
    when the moment is right,
  • Not Synced
    and give the following directions
    to everyone else.
  • Not Synced
    Your plan is simple:
  • Not Synced
you’ll use the left lever to count visits,
  • Not Synced
and the right lever will have no meaning,
  • Not Synced
    so there’s no harm in
    moving it up or down.
  • Not Synced
Each of the others will pull the left
    lever
  • Not Synced
    from position A to position
    B exactly once.
  • Not Synced
If the robot appears with the left lever
    already pulled down,
  • Not Synced
or if an individual has previously pulled
    the left lever down
  • Not Synced
at any point in the past,
  • Not Synced
then they should move the right lever.
  • Not Synced
You, meanwhile, will be the only one who
ever resets the left lever from position B
  • Not Synced
    to position A.
  • Not Synced
This gives you a way to count how many
people have been visited by the robot.
  • Not Synced
Everyone needs to pull the left lever
    down exactly once,
  • Not Synced
    and you’re the only one
    to pull it back up.
  • Not Synced
So you know that the tenth time
    the robot visits you
  • Not Synced
with its left lever in the down position,
  • Not Synced
    it must have visited
    all ten of the others.
  • Not Synced
And that means you’re safe to press the
    button and teleport everyone home.
  • Not Synced
    It may take a while–
  • Not Synced
most likely the robot will need to
    teleport around 355 times;
  • Not Synced
but better that than leave anyone behind.
  • Not Synced
Your teammates phase back into your home
    dimension one at a time.
  • Not Synced
The mission proves a great success.
  • Not Synced
    Well...mostly.
