Dignity isn't a privilege. It's a worker's right

  • Not Synced
    Of all the characters
    in all the Disney films
  • Not Synced
the one I love the most
    is Jiminy Cricket from "Pinnochio."
  • Not Synced
My favorite scene in the movie
  • Not Synced
    is when the blue fairy
    is saying to Pinnochio,
  • Not Synced
    "Always let your conscience
    be your guide."
  • Not Synced
    Pinnochio asks, "What are conscience?"
  • Not Synced
    and Jiminy Cricket is scandalized
by the question: "What are conscience!"
  • Not Synced
    "What are conscience!
  • Not Synced
Conscience is that still small voice
    that people won't listen to,
  • Not Synced
    that's just the trouble
    with the world today."
  • Not Synced
I love the way Jiminy Cricket
    is always there
  • Not Synced
    with a nerdy, ethical thing
  • Not Synced
    just as Pinnochio's coming up
with some kind of good plan.
  • Not Synced
I think of him as speaking
    truth to puppet.
  • Not Synced
I always wondered what it was
    about Jiminy Cricket
  • Not Synced
that made me love him so much
  • Not Synced
and one day it hit me.
  • Not Synced
    It was because he sounds
    like my grandfather.
  • Not Synced
My grandfather was a very sweet
    and cuddly man
  • Not Synced
and I loved him to the moon and back.
  • Not Synced
But I shared him with the big, wide world.
  • Not Synced
    His name was Roy O'Disney,
  • Not Synced
    and together with his younger
    brother Walt Disney,
  • Not Synced
he came from a very humble
    upbringing in Kansas
  • Not Synced
and started and ran one of the most
    iconic businesses in the world.
  • Not Synced
Two things I remember the best
    about going to Disneyland
  • Not Synced
    with my grandfather.
  • Not Synced
The first thing was he always
    gave me a stern warning
  • Not Synced
    that if I ever sassed
    anybody who worked there
  • Not Synced
I was in deep doo-doo when we got home.
  • Not Synced
He said these people work really hard --
  • Not Synced
    harder than you can imagine,
  • Not Synced
    and they deserve your respect.
  • Not Synced
The other is that he never
walked by a piece of garbage
  • Not Synced
    inside of Disneyland
  • Not Synced
    or anywhere else,
  • Not Synced
where he didn't bend over to pick it up.
  • Not Synced
He said no one's too good
to pick up a piece of garbage.
  • Not Synced
    In grandpa's day,
  • Not Synced
a job at Disneyland was not a gig.
  • Not Synced
A person could expect to own a home,
  • Not Synced
    raise a family,
  • Not Synced
    access decent health care,
  • Not Synced
retire in some security without worrying,
  • Not Synced
on just what he earned there at the park.
  • Not Synced
Mind you, grandpa fought the unions
  • Not Synced
    and he fought them hard.
  • Not Synced
He said he didn't like to be forced
  • Not Synced
    to do something he wanted
    to do voluntarily.
  • Not Synced
That was [rank] paternalism of course
and maybe a tiny bit of BS.
  • Not Synced
    He wasn't an angel,
  • Not Synced
    and everyone wasn't well
and fairly treated across the company,
  • Not Synced
    something that's well-known.
  • Not Synced
But I think in his core he had
    a very deep commitment
  • Not Synced
to the idea that he had a moral obligation
to every human being that worked for him.
  • Not Synced
That actually wasn't such an uncommon
attitude for CEOs of the day.
  • Not Synced
But when my grandfather died in 1971,
  • Not Synced
a new mindset was beginning to take hold
  • Not Synced
    of the American and eventually
    the global imagination.
  • Not Synced
Jiminy Cricket got shown the door
    by economist Milton Friedman,
  • Not Synced
    among others,
  • Not Synced
    who popularized the idea
    of shareholder primacy.
  • Not Synced
Now, shareholder primacy is a pretty
reasonable idea when you think about it.
  • Not Synced
    Shareholders own the company,
  • Not Synced
    shareholders want profits and growth,
  • Not Synced
    so, therefore, you prioritize
    profits and growth.
  • Not Synced
    Very sensible.
  • Not Synced
    But unfortunately, shareholder primacy
was an idea that became a mindset
  • Not Synced
and then that mindset jumped the rails,
  • Not Synced
    and it came to fundamentally
    alter everything
  • Not Synced
about the way companies and even
    governments were led and managed.
  • Not Synced
    Milton Friedman's pivotal op-ed
    in the "New York Times"
  • Not Synced
was followed by decades of concerted
    organizing and lobbying
  • Not Synced
    by business-focus activists
  • Not Synced
    along with a sustained assault
    on every law and regulation
  • Not Synced
    that had once held businesses'
    worst impulses in check.
  • Not Synced
    And soon enough,
  • Not Synced
this new mindset had taken hold
    across every business school
  • Not Synced
    and across every sector.
  • Not Synced
    Profits were to be pursued
    by any means necessary,
  • Not Synced
    unions were kneecapped,
  • Not Synced
    taxes were slashed,
  • Not Synced
    and with the same machete,
  • Not Synced
    so was the safety net.
  • Not Synced
I don't need to tell you
    about the inequality
  • Not Synced
that's been the result of these shifts.
  • Not Synced
We all know the story well.
  • Not Synced
The bottom line is that everything
that turns a gig into a livelihood
  • Not Synced
was stripped away from an American worker:
  • Not Synced
    job security,
  • Not Synced
    paid sick days,
  • Not Synced
    vacation time.
  • Not Synced
    All of that went away
  • Not Synced
even as the wealthy saw their net worths
    bloat to unprecedented,
  • Not Synced
    and yes, unusable levels.
  • Not Synced
    Although if you're Scrooge McDuck
you could change it all into gold coins
  • Not Synced
    and backstroke through it.
  • Not Synced
    So let me just address
    the Dumbo in the room.
  • Not Synced
Yes, I am criticizing the company
    that bears my family's name.
  • Not Synced
Yes, I think Disney can do better.
  • Not Synced
And I believe that many of the thousands
    of magnificent people
  • Not Synced
who work at the Walt Disney Company
wish that it would do better
  • Not Synced
just as much as I do.
  • Not Synced
    For almost a century,
  • Not Synced
Disney has turned a pretty profit
on the idea that families a kind of magic,
  • Not Synced
    that love is important,
  • Not Synced
    that imaginations matter.
  • Not Synced
    That's why it turns
    your stomach a little bit
  • Not Synced
when I tell you that Cinderella
might be sleeping in her car.
  • Not Synced
    But let's be very clear:
  • Not Synced
this is not just about Disney.
  • Not Synced
This is structural and this is systemic.
  • Not Synced
No single CEO on his own is culpable,
  • Not Synced
    and no single company
has the wherewithal to buck this.
  • Not Synced
    The analysts,
  • Not Synced
    the pundits,
  • Not Synced
    the politicians,
  • Not Synced
    the business school curricula
  • Not Synced
and the social norms that drive
the shame of the contemporary economy.
  • Not Synced
    Disney is just doing what
    everybody else does,
  • Not Synced
and they're not even the worst offender.
  • Not Synced
If I told you how bad it was for workers
at Amazon or McDonald's or Walmart,
  • Not Synced
or any one of a thousand other places
    you've never heard of,
  • Not Synced
it's not going to hit you as viscerally
as if I tell you that 73 percent,
  • Not Synced
or three out of four of the people
who smile when you walk in,
  • Not Synced
who help you comfort that crying baby,
  • Not Synced
who maybe help you have the best
    vacation you ever have,
  • Not Synced
can't consistently put food on the table.
  • Not Synced
    It's supposed to be
    the happiest place on earth.
  • Not Synced
And the people who work there
    take incredible pride,
  • Not Synced
that they pursue a higher purpose.
  • Not Synced
    It's a higher purpose
  • Not Synced
    that both my grandfather and
    great-uncle very intentionally built
  • Not Synced
when they made it a place that honors
    an interaction over a transaction.
  • Not Synced
Now, I know that a word like magic
    makes you wonder
  • Not Synced
if I've taken leave of my senses.
  • Not Synced
I know it's hard to imagine
that something as ephemeral as love
  • Not Synced
can support a brand as big as Disney,
  • Not Synced
and I know that it's hard to imagine
  • Not Synced
    that things as unquanifiable
    as moral obligations
  • Not Synced
should have any call on us
  • Not Synced
    when we seek to deliver
    value to our investors.
  • Not Synced
    But accounting and finance
    don't run the world.
  • Not Synced
    Beliefs,
  • Not Synced
    mindsets --
  • Not Synced
those are what drive business ethics.
  • Not Synced
And if we're going to change
    those mindsets and belief systems,
  • Not Synced
we're going to have to use the most
    Disney superpower out there.
  • Not Synced
We're going to have to use
    our imaginations.
  • Not Synced
You're going to have to invite
Jiminy Cricket back to the party.
  • Not Synced
    Now, Jiminy Cricket might start
    with some low-hanging fruit
  • Not Synced
    like, greed is not good,
  • Not Synced
like the world is not divided
    into makers and takers,
  • Not Synced
    and that nobody ever,
  • Not Synced
    without any help,
  • Not Synced
    pulled themselves up
    by their own bootstraps --
  • Not Synced
if you know anything about physics
    you'll understand why that is.
  • Not Synced
Jiminy might remind us that every
single person who works for us,
  • Not Synced
    without exception,
  • Not Synced
whether they fill out the spreadsheets
  • Not Synced
    or change the bedsheets,
  • Not Synced
    deserves the respect
    and dignity of living wage.
  • Not Synced
    It's as simple as that.
  • Not Synced
    And Jiminy might wonder
    how managers and employees
  • Not Synced
    could possibly have any kind
    of empathy for each other
  • Not Synced
    when their workplaces have
    become so segregated
  • Not Synced
that it seems normal and natural
  • Not Synced
    that an executive needs
an especially swanky place to park
  • Not Synced
or eat or go to the bathroom,
  • Not Synced
or that an executive is too good
to pick up a piece of garbage.
  • Not Synced
We are, after all, just the one species
living together on just the one planet.
  • Not Synced
Jiminy might ask us to question
    some of our dogma.
  • Not Synced
Does a CEO really need to be paid
as much or more than every other CEO,
  • Not Synced
    or is that just creating
    a competitive dynamic
  • Not Synced
    that's driving numbers
    into the stratosphere?
  • Not Synced
He might wonder if boards really do know
all that they really need to know
  • Not Synced
when they don't have frontline workers
    ever at their meetings.
  • Not Synced
He might ask if there's such a thing
    as too much money.
  • Not Synced
Or he might wonder if maybe we can
    make common cause
  • Not Synced
    with consumers,
  • Not Synced
    with workers,
  • Not Synced
    with companies,
  • Not Synced
    with communities,
  • Not Synced
for all of us to come together
  • Not Synced
to redefine this incredibly narrow idea
  • Not Synced
    of what the purpose
    of a company really is.
  • Not Synced
Jiminy would want us to remember
that nobody works in a vacuum,
  • Not Synced
that the men and women who run companies
  • Not Synced
    actively co-create the reality
    we all have to share.
  • Not Synced
And just like with global warming,
  • Not Synced
we are, each of us, responsible
    for collective consequences
  • Not Synced
of our individual decisions and actions.
  • Not Synced
I believe that the most profitable
    business ecosystem
  • Not Synced
in the history of the world
  • Not Synced
    can do better.
  • Not Synced
I believe we can take just a little bit
    off of the upside,
  • Not Synced
take a tiny bit of pressure off
the speed at which things are happening.
  • Not Synced
    I believe that everything
    we lose in the short-term
  • Not Synced
will more than make up for itself
  • Not Synced
in an expanded landscape of moral,
    spiritual and financial prosperity.
  • Not Synced
I know what the cynics say,
  • Not Synced
    and it's true:
  • Not Synced
    you [... ... ... ] your principles.
  • Not Synced
    But you've can't breathe
    a basis point either,
  • Not Synced
    and neither can your children.
  • Not Synced
    I idolized my grandfather
    probably too much.
  • Not Synced
He worked in very different times
  • Not Synced
    and those are times
none of us want to go back to
  • Not Synced
for all kinds of good reasons.
  • Not Synced
I know there are a lot of CEOs today
    who are just as well-meaning
  • Not Synced
and just as decent as my grandfather was,
  • Not Synced
but they're working at a time
    with very different expectations
  • Not Synced
    and much more cutthroat context.
  • Not Synced
    But here's the good news:
  • Not Synced
    expectations and contexts are made
  • Not Synced
and they can be unmade too.
  • Not Synced
There is so much to learn
    from the simple integrity
  • Not Synced
    of how my grandfather
    understood his job as CEO.
  • Not Synced
    Behind every theme park
    and every stuffed animal,
  • Not Synced
    a handful of principles
    governed everything.
  • Not Synced
    Every single person deserves
    respect and dignity.
  • Not Synced
    No one is too good
to pick up a piece of garbage,
  • Not Synced
and always let conscience be your guide.
  • Not Synced
    We could all do worse
    than listen to Jiminy Cricket.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
