There's so many paintings by famous artists here

Like van Gogh, Picasso, da Vinci,

or Monet

So I'll take you around to see the paintings today

Finally, after going through the gallery

and seeing so many famous artists

we are now in front of an original van Gogh!

Let's go see.

Vincent van Gogh. Gosh, so hard to pronounce!

known by Thais as van Gogh, is a Dutch post-impressionist painter.

He led a very sad life.

When he reached the age of 17-18,

he went to intern at a gallery

that sold paintings.

After interning in his hometown,

he was sent to Paris

which you might know that Paris was the

capital of art.

He thought he was going to succeed in life,

but no. Because he was a sincere person;

didn't like lying or taking advantage

he didn't succeed in selling pictures.

The gallery he was working at liked to take

low quality paintings and

tell people that "This is a masterpiece!"

Therefore, the price is very high.

van Gogh would then whisper the truth

to customers.

The owner then found out

and fired van Gogh.

That was his first episode of the unfortunate series,

so he thought he wasn't good in business

and turned to religion.

So, he plunged into a religious life

he studied and tried to become a pastor.

He got to deliver a sermon in a town

but because he wasn't good with public speaking

[I'm not good with words but my heart is yours]

Not good with speeches, but wanted to be a pastor

didn't work out. He didn't succeed

so he turned his back to religion

and realized that art was his calling.

"If I don't want to sell pictures, I'll paint them myself"

So during 1880 to around 1890,

these ten years, van Gogh

became a painter and produced so many paintings.

Just in a decade,

he painted around

2,100 paintings.

Try estimating how many days he used per painting.

His paintings weren't simple sketches, but

were oil paintings in big frames.

He painted so many works!

His style is post-impressionism:

bright colours, exciting brushwork.

If you look closely at his work, you can see

how his brush swifts.

When they try to prove a van Gogh,

they usually prove it from the brushwork.

Moreover, van Gogh's subjects are usually

simple daily life objects

to show that there's nothing more to life.

Apart from that, he wasn't an introvert, not interested

in meeting other people like other artists,

So he got to meet other renowned artists

especially his best friend, Paul Gauguin

I believe you have heard his name.

Which leads us to the next painting:

"The Sunflowers"

This painting is actually part of a collection.

The collection is entitled "Decoration for the Yellow House."

These paintings were painted to decorate a yellow house.

Yes, literally yellow. This is van Gogh's house in France

which Gauguin was going to stay at for a while.

Out of love for his friend, van Gogh wanted to decorate

Gauguin's room with a painting of sunflowers

"See Gauguin, life is simple"

"There is no need for extravagant decor"

"just a picture of sunflowers can brighten up your day"

This moved Gauguin so much that

he said that the sunflower collection

is van Gogh's best work.

It's his masterpiece.

The two were really close.

When van Gogh was painting that collection,

Gauguin also painted a picture of van Gogh painting the sunflowers

like a painting of a painting of a painting.

They had a really close relationship,

and also had some dramas like

when van Gogh was depressed

because his unsuccessful life.

His paintings were rarely sold when he was alive.

He only became famous posthumously.

Once, van Gogh was painting and got mad.

He took a blade and

chased Gauguin around

and after unsuccessfully hurting Gauguin,

he used that blade to cut his ear off

and then painted a portrait of himself without the ear.

You might have heard this story.

Because of his mental illness, he committed suicide

at the age of 37. Such a short life.

If he lived longer, we would've been

able to appreciate more of his art.

Despite being able to sell only one painting

from more than 2,000 paintings

when he was alive,

his work became a hit after he died.

Many people bought and sold his work.

It could be said that

his life was quite sad. He couldn't even see his fame.

You can see how popular he is.

It's the only painting people look at.

This is "Sunflowers" painted in 1888.

The "Sunflower" behind me,

he painted it in yellow

to show his friendship.

At first, it was hung in

the guest's room in van Gogh's house.

He was very proud of this painting.

Sunflowers are the symbol of appreciation,

and gratitude.

I tried oil paintings when I was little

and I studied from this painting.

Never thought I'd be able to see the original.

I think this is also a type of a nerd.

You might not know I painted too.

I did oil painting, pastel, acrylic

but now all my skills are gone.

All that's left are the illustrations for my videos.

Let's talk about the sunflower collection.

It's a collection because there isn't just one.

Right?

When I showed the painting, you might've wondered

it doesn't look like the one I've seen.

There are 7 paintings is this set; painted continuously.

Each painting is scattered in different parts of the world.

The 7 paintings are grouped into 2 sets.

The first group are the first 4 paintings.

They are the original paintings intended to decorate the room.

The other 3 are his favourites

so he copied the first 4 and made another set.

So where can you see all 7?

Sadly, you can't see all 7.

Because the first is now private property.

We can only see it if the owner lets us.

The second one is even harder to see.

It was bought by a Japanese buyer to be installed in a museum

but during the second world war,

Japan was bombed,

and the painting disappeared along with other stuff.

Now, people are trying to recreate this painting

from old photographs

but haven't succeeded yet.

It's hard to achieve his brushwork

and other elements.

So, we just have to wait.

If you're a fan of Conan the Detective

Surprising to see that they're connected, right?

but in Conan the Movie 19: Sunflowers of Inferno

the sunflowers in that movie

are a reference to this second painting.

The third painting is one of the most famous.

It is in a museum in Munich, Germany.

We now come to

the fourth painting that I saw.

It might be a well-known painting with the yellow background.

Like said, it's in National Gallery Museum, UK.

If you don't want to travel to UK but want to see

the fourth painting,

the fifth, sixth, and seventh are copies of the first set.

The fourth has two copies and one is

at Tokyo, which is the fifth painting.

And the sixth

is at van Gogh Foundation, Netherlands.

The last is a copy of the one at Munich,

now installed in the US.

So that was a brief story about van Gogh's sunflowers.

Behind me is "van Gogh's Chair"

another famous painting.

It shows his chair, his pipe, and tobacco.

I don't know if I should censor the pipe,

but take it as art.

It is a picture of an ordinary chair, on ordinary earth ware floor

and reflects van Gogh's personality

as a simple and sincere person

not extravagant like artists

before him. Take the Romans as an example.

This is one of his significant works.

This is another van Gogh. It might not be well known among Thais.

It is entitled "Long Grass and Butterflies"

and it is literally

what the name suggests.

Very literal.

So it tells us about his character;

that his subjects would be

simple things

which is different from his predecessors,

who would paint about Christianity

have very fancy styles,

put all characters in one frame.

After seeing van Gogh's simplicity,

I'll tell you how exaggerated van Gogh's predecessors were.

So let's go see a lavish artist:

Leonardo da Vinci.

"Virgin on the Rock" or as known as

"Madonna on the Rock."

It is a picture of Mary with

baby Jesus, an angel,

and John the Baptist

who was still an infant.

All of them are in a cave

which is the reason of the title.

Many of you may know that Mary

is fully known as Virgin Mary.

You can see that he tried

to emphasize the purity, the virginity

of Mary through the choice of colours

and the halo on her head

In this picture, we see Mary sitting

and Jesus here

and the angel looking over Jesus.

All the important Christian symbols are here.

But, but, but, like the Sunflower collection,

This painting is also a part of a collection.

There are two paintings in this set.

The first

is at Louvre, France

and the second is the one I saw.

The two have different details.

At first, da Vinci painted

the first one and the commissioner

wanted some things changed

so he had to paint the second one.

It was intended to be hung

in a church in Milan, Italy

but the church

decided to sell the painting.

I believe many of you have read Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code"

that book made da Vinci popular for a while.

Can you remember when he mentioned Maddona on the Rock?

That he said there are 2 different paintings.

The first has all the evil symbols.

It is this painting I'm talking about.

So if you've read the book, here it is.

You might know this painting.

It's one of the paintings that

he co-painted. It's not 100% his work.

It is an

angel in a green dress, playing an instrument

similar to a violin

but it's a viola.

I give up with Italian. Comment if you know how to read.

You must know Picasso.

This is one of his works, but may not be well-known,

but shows us his brushwork

that is not realistic

So during his time

he was considered a rebel of the arts

"Why are you painting this?" "Go paint beautiful things!"

So he introduced a new chapter of art

Right here is a painting

by another famous painter

like van Gogh

which is Monet

Thais may not know, but he is famous so I'll show you.

So you can see the whole gallery.

Monet is van Gogh's contemporary

but he succeeded is his career

and became very rich

that he could buy a house.

In that house he had a big lotus pond

which inspired him to paint this painting

of the pond.

You might be familiar with this painting, so I wanted to show you.

So how was the tour?

It must have made you art nerds

excited to some extent.

If you went to Louvre, when you go see Mona Lisa

or other works, you can only see from afar

and there is always a crowd

but at National Gallery Museum, England,

the works are very accessible

there is only a thin line, and the paintings are inches away

we can observe the brushwork of van Gogh closely.

So if you go to England and like art

I recommend you to go there. It is also free!

And most importantly,

there are not only beautiful paintings,

the building is also fascinating.
