The secret to a fulfilling life, surprise! | Gil Peretz | TEDxSavyon

  • 0:10 - 0:15
From the moment I was born,
life has been full of surprises.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
"Mazel tov, your baby is a redhead!"
  • 0:20 - 0:23
the doctor smiled at my shocked mom.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
No one in my family expected a ginger.
  • 0:27 - 0:31

    My dad made his living
    inventing children's games,
  • 0:31 - 0:36
    and his creativity instilled
the magical power of surprise in me.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
One day, my mom came home
from the grocery store with eggs.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    Suddenly, she dropped them,
and they splattered all over the floor.
  • 0:45 - 0:51
The next day, my dad came home
    carrying five chickens.
  • 0:52 - 0:57
"Surprise! I want us to have
    five fresh eggs every morning."
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Honestly, I think the chickens
were more surprised than we were,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
having to live in our small apartment.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    (Laughter)
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    Fast forward 30 years later,
    in my mid-thirties,
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    my dad attended a leadership
    seminar I was delivering.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
I gave him a good price too.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    (Laughter)
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    Just before the break,
    I tell the audience:
  • 1:17 - 1:23
"Feel free to stick a post-it note
with your questions on the whiteboard."
  • 1:24 - 1:29
After the break, I walk back
on stage and discover a note...
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    from my dad.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
"Gili, when are you getting married?
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    (Laughter)
  • 1:39 - 1:44
I loved his surprises so much,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    but I couldn't even imagine
  • 1:47 - 1:50
how much they would impact my life.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    Now, let's have some fun.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Everyone, please reach
    for the envelopes.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    Open it.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Yes!
  • 2:00 - 2:05
And hold what's inside up high
so we can all see it.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    Now, look around, look around.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
Do you see those big smiles?
  • 2:11 - 2:15
Well, why are you so happy?
    It's only a dollar bill.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    Yes, you can keep it.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    (Laughter)
  • 2:21 - 2:26
Now we all know that $1
can't even buy you a cup of coffee.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
So, why are we so happy?
  • 2:30 - 2:33
Because of the element of surprise.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    Research shows,
  • 2:37 - 2:43
that the pleasure center in our brain
is more active during moments of surprise,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    and surprises intensify emotions
    by up to 400%.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    Four hundred percent!
  • 2:50 - 2:54
When the brain identifies a surprise,
    it releases dopamine.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    We remember better.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    So,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    today,
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    I want to talk about
    the gift of surprise,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    how it impacts our happiness,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    improves our connections,
  • 3:08 - 3:14
    and even helps us deliver
    powerful messages.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
Now, we all know that some surprises
    are better than others, right?
  • 3:18 - 3:22
“Surprise! We're going to Disney World”
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    versus "Surprise, dad,
I broke my phone again." (Laughter)
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    As humans, we prefer
    control and stability
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    over surprise and change,
  • 3:33 - 3:36
but even though we want control,
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    positive surprises still benefit us,
  • 3:40 - 3:46
and we can use the art
    of surprise to impact others.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
Have you ever heard of a unique proposal?
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    In a hot air balloon,
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    on a mountain, or underwater,
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    I proposed with a ring
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    hidden inside
    a warm... chocolate cake!
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    (Laughter)
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    And to this day,
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    my wife dreads cakes fearing
    another lifelong commitment.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    (Laughter)
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    See, my dad's note
    did influence me after all.
  • 4:18 - 4:24
But the problem is that many
relationships lack an element of surprise.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
    Life tends to become
    a predictable gray routine.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    So the magic is lost
  • 4:32 - 4:37
in the mundane daily tasks of laundry,
  • 4:37 - 4:41
    driving the kids, or watching
    "Dancing with the Stars."
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    However, research shows
  • 4:44 - 4:49
    that surprising your partner
    with new activities together
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    reignites the relationship's spark,
  • 4:52 - 4:55
and increases the level of satisfaction.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    When was the last time
    you surprised your loved ones?
  • 4:59 - 5:03
I see some of you are smiling
    at each other. That's lovely.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    (Audience) Seven years ago!
  • 5:04 - 5:07
Seven years ago? Not good enough!
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    (Laughter)
  • 5:09 - 5:13
    You see, it's simple:
    when you surprise someone,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    when you surprise people,
you show you care about them,
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    and surprises are fun.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
Last year, I saw my wife's car
    parked at a shopping center.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    So to surprise her,
  • 5:24 - 5:28
I left her a very sweet note
    on the windshield.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
Only I didn't tell her it was from me...
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    (Laughter)
  • 5:32 - 5:37
At first, she was excited, thrilled.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
She thought she had a secret admirer.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    (Laughter)
  • 5:44 - 5:46
Then she found out it was me.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    So a few weeks later,
    she left me a surprise,
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    a love note attached
    to a parking ticket
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    (Laughter)
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    she had received... so sweet!
  • 5:58 - 6:03
    Now a surprise doesn't have
    to be expensive or sophisticated.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    It can be simple.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
Even small surprises make a big impact.
  • 6:10 - 6:15
And you can surprise your partners
    with small gestures
  • 6:15 - 6:19
like painting a heart on a mirror,
or hiding a love note in their socks,
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    or buying the book
    they mentioned the other day.
  • 6:22 - 6:24
And the exciting thing about surprises
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    is that whenever you surprise
    someone, it also rewards you.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    Surprises reward everyone!
  • 6:32 - 6:36
    And speaking about loved ones,
    we have three daughters,
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    all girls...
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    (Laugther)
  • 6:39 - 6:43
Surprising them? Not easy at all.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
I'm not even allowed to tag them
on social media without their permission.
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    Yet, with time, they realized
that some of our best moments
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    are from surprising moments,
  • 6:56 - 7:00
    like when our eldest daughter
  • 7:00 - 7:06
flew home to San Diego CA
    from Washington DC
  • 7:06 - 7:09
and jumped out of a box,
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    (Laughter)
  • 7:11 - 7:17
    or when our daughters expected
a seven-hour layover in New York,
  • 7:17 - 7:20
but instead, we stayed there for a week.
  • 7:21 - 7:25
    Two years ago,
after I published my recent book,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
my daughters wanted to surprise me,
  • 7:27 - 7:31
so they bought me a star,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    a real star.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
    And they named it
    after my book "Wow."
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    Now, I guess I can't travel there,
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    but I will never forget
    how it made me feel.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    Now, besides family,
  • 7:47 - 7:50
we can use the art of surprise
  • 7:50 - 7:55
with friends, or at work with colleagues,
    customers, employees,
  • 7:55 - 7:59
but now, let's see how we can use it
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    to deliver compelling messages.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    For more than 30 years,
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    I've delivered hundreds of talks
    and workshops around the world
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    on many topics like influence,
    communication skills,
  • 8:11 - 8:15
    and the mindset for success,
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    and ever since
    I started speaking on stage,
  • 8:20 - 8:25
    I've used unpredictable moments
    to engage my audience.
  • 8:26 - 8:30
    Now why is it important
    to surprise an audience?
  • 8:30 - 8:33
    Daniel Gilbert and
    Matt Killingsworth discovered
  • 8:33 - 8:37
that we wander off in our thoughts
    and fail to be present
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    almost half the time,
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    47%.
  • 8:43 - 8:47
That means that since I started talking
    about nine minutes ago,
  • 8:47 - 8:50
some of you were present for only
    four minutes and nine seconds.
  • 8:50 - 8:51
    (Laughter)
  • 8:51 - 8:57
    That's exactly why it's a challenge
    to deliver messages effectively
  • 8:57 - 9:02
because if you are not paying attention
now, you will not remember anything.
  • 9:03 - 9:09
    However, the moment
    you surprise your audience,
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    you get their attention back.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    (Laughter)
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    (Laughter)
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    (Falling of a ping-pong ball
    on the scene) Thank you.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    (Laughter)
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    (Audience) Yes!
  • 9:49 - 9:53
    I call these unexpected
    moments, "Wow moments".
  • 9:54 - 9:55
    (Audience) WOW!
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    Yes! (Applause)
  • 9:59 - 10:04
    Sometimes people raise their eyebrows,
drop their jaws, and even say...
  • 10:04 - 10:05
    (Audience) Wow!
  • 10:05 - 10:10
Yes, "wow," and the great thing
about wow is that anyone can wow.
  • 10:10 - 10:13
A friend of mine, Ayala Biran,
    is a safety expert.
  • 10:13 - 10:16
    She was invited to speak
    to construction workers
  • 10:16 - 10:20
    about protecting their heads
    with safety helmets.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
So picture this: she goes on stage,
  • 10:25 - 10:29
and suddenly, she picks up a watermelon
  • 10:29 - 10:31
and drops it on the stage.
  • 10:32 - 10:36
    Bam! The watermelon splashes everywhere.
  • 10:36 - 10:38
    Everyone is shocked.
  • 10:39 - 10:45
    Can you imagine the chunks
    of watermelon on the stage?
  • 10:47 - 10:49
    Then she says, "What happens
    to the watermelon
  • 10:49 - 10:54
can happen to anyone without a helmet."
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    Wow!
  • 10:57 - 11:02
That's exactly how a message becomes
not only memorable but also unforgettable.
  • 11:03 - 11:07
Now there are many creative ways
    to wow an audience,
  • 11:07 - 11:11
and in my book, I've collected
    more than a hundred ideas.
  • 11:11 - 11:15
    When designing a wow moment,
you want to ask yourself one question:
  • 11:15 - 11:20
what emotion do I wish to evoke
    to deliver my message?
  • 11:20 - 11:25
    In most cases, we want
    to evoke positive emotions
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    like joy,
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    trust,
  • 11:29 - 11:30
    and surprise,
  • 11:30 - 11:34
    but sometimes we can
    evoke negative emotions
  • 11:34 - 11:36
    like sadness,
  • 11:36 - 11:37
    or fear.
  • 11:38 - 11:42
Why is it important to trigger emotions?
  • 11:43 - 11:49
    Well, when an emotion
    is attached to a message,
  • 11:49 - 11:51
    people remember it better.
  • 11:51 - 11:56
    Sometimes people
    may forget what you say,
  • 11:56 - 12:00
    but they never forget
    how you make them feel.
  • 12:01 - 12:04
So if surprises make such a big impact,
  • 12:04 - 12:07
why don't we use them more often?
  • 12:07 - 12:13
    As part of my research,
I posted that question on social media,
  • 12:13 - 12:17
"Why don't you surprise more often?"
    and hundreds of people replied.
  • 12:18 - 12:21
Most of them said, "What if I fail?"
  • 12:21 - 12:23
"What if they don't like my surprise?"
  • 12:23 - 12:25
    "I'm an introvert,"
  • 12:25 - 12:27
    "I'm not good at surprising,"
  • 12:27 - 12:31
    and the best one,
"I'm an accountant. We don't do wow."
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    (Laughter)
  • 12:35 - 12:39
However, there are lots of reasons
    why you should surprise more.
  • 12:39 - 12:42
    First, "Satisfaction."
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    When we surprise,
  • 12:45 - 12:50
    we increase the level
    of satisfaction in our relationships.
  • 12:51 - 12:56
    When we surprise,
    we create unforgettable moments.
  • 12:56 - 12:58
    We activate the dopamine,
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    and we create magical moments
for the people we care about.
  • 13:02 - 13:06
    When we surprise,
we renew the spark in our life.
  • 13:06 - 13:11
    We become more present
as well as the people that we surprise.
  • 13:12 - 13:17
    Surprises reward everyone.
  • 13:17 - 13:22
    And surprises
intensify emotions by up to 400%.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
And "Simplicity," it's simple to do it.
  • 13:26 - 13:29
Even small surprises make a big impact.
  • 13:29 - 13:32
    And last but not least,
  • 13:33 - 13:34
    "Enjoyment."
  • 13:34 - 13:39
    When we surprise, we activate
the pleasure center in our brain,
  • 13:40 - 13:43
    so we impact our happiness.
  • 13:43 - 13:50
    That's why I'm so passionate
about spreading the gift of surprise.
  • 13:51 - 13:56
    After my dad passed away
seven months ago at the age of 94,
  • 13:57 - 14:03
    I realized that one
of his secrets to a great life
  • 14:03 - 14:06
    was his habit of surprising,
  • 14:06 - 14:12
and I truly believe it helped him
think with flexibility, humor, and joy,
  • 14:13 - 14:16
    and kept him young forever.
  • 14:17 - 14:23
So now, I invite you all
    to embrace surprise.
  • 14:23 - 14:29
Take a moment to reflect on how you can
apply the gift of surprise in your life.
  • 14:31 - 14:35
You know, at the beginning of every year,
  • 14:35 - 14:38
I pick one word as my inspiration
    for the whole year,
  • 14:38 - 14:43
and every morning, I focus on that word.
  • 14:46 - 14:50
    This year, I'm choosing
    the word "surprise,"
  • 14:50 - 14:54
and I invite you all to join me
  • 14:54 - 14:56
and let "surprise" be your word too
  • 14:56 - 15:01
    so together, we can create
    a year full of surprises.
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    It's wow or never.
  • 15:06 - 15:07
    Thank you.
  • 15:07 - 15:09
    (Applause)
