Ilya Muromets
-
Prologue
-
directed by Ivan Aksenchuk
written by Michael Volpin
-
I beg your welcome, good people
-
Old men and young ones bow low
-
and gather yourselves here, good people
-
settle yourselves not for a short
-
but for a long stay
-
extraordinary and unusual
-
Not in a 100 werst from here
but no further then a 1000 werst
-
and some 1000 years ago
-
In the glorious settlement of Murom
-
in the village called Karacharovo,
-
lived the farmer Ivan Timofeevitch
-
with his wife Evfrosinya Yakovlevna.
-
"Look at me, look at me, Ivan Timofeevich." she said
-
Without uttering another word.
-
"Are you enceinte,
my faithful Evfrosinyushka? "
-
She responds with silence,
-
answers with downcast eyes
-
barely noticeable nodding.
-
And in due time
-
she gave birth to a son
-
this very happy Evfrosinya Yakovlevna
-
But then like a haze, no, a black cloud
-
passing over a clear sun,
-
trouble came,
fierce trouble
-
clouding the happiness of the mother.
-
Sick, very sick, fell Little Ilya.
-
"Oh what trouble, so terrible,
-
what poor parents,
-
they'll drink, feed, yes educate
Not a helping, not a working,
-
but a wretched freeloading son ... "
-
Leave at once, all you neighbor-women!
-
Get out of here, you non-compassionates
-
We are with you, my little son.
-
We do not need their pity.
-
Oh you're welcome, my happiness,
-
oh you, my rosy apple cheeks,
-
oh you my legs that cannot walk,
-
oh you my hands that cannot hold anything.
-
Thirty years was sitting Ilya Muromets ...
-
Oh, thirty years of sitting
without the use of arms or legs.
-
Where, where has gone our Motherland?
-
Where are your sons?
-
Where your defending heroes?
-
Are you lying on the stove,
Warming your backs against the bricks?
-
Oh you wayfaring old strangers,
-
Oh you wandering beggars,
-
If I'd have a man's strength,
-
not even his full strength but just half of it,
-
I myself would go wandering,
-
and stand up for the Russian land!
-
with a black power I would fight
-
Sparing neither my enemies, nor myself,
-
but now go, you old men,
-
do not force me, the cripple,
-
to cuss and curse.
-
Do not send us away, fine young man
we will go by ourselves,
-
just give us something to drink first
-
bring us some water from your well.
-
Aren't you ashamed old men
to ask a legless men to bring you water?!
-
Put down to earth your frisky feet
from this oakwood bench.
-
Just get up, get up! Well done!
-
Go, go forward to the Earth-mother's well.
-
Then a wondrous miracle happens;
-
A wonderful miracle, a marvelous miracle!
-
From the spring Ilyushenka
brings them refreshing cold water.
-
"A full bucket for you to drink."
-
"Drink some yourself Ilya Muromets,
Ilya Muromets son of Ivan!"
-
How do you feel, Ilya Muromets?
-
I feel a great power inside of me!
-
If there were a ring attached to the earth
-
and another ring to the blue sky
-
and I grab the ring of heaven,
and pull the blue sky to the Earth.
-
to mix the earthly with the heavenly.
-
You will forgive me, wandering beggars,
-
you miraculous old men.
-
If I will do a good deed -
it is you, not I who did it!
-
You - my second parents!
You have given me a second birth!
-
I greet you my dear father,
-
and greetings to you, my darling mother.
-
Give me your blessing
-
I will stand up for the Russian land
-
to serve her in faith and righteousness!
-
Then responded his father, old Ivan Timofeevich
-
For righteous works I will give you my blessing
-
When you go your path -
do not boast of your Herculean power.
-
Do right to the ones that
have been robbed of protection
-
and punish the ones that were abusing.
-
Long walked the son of Ivan Timofeevich
-
When he came to the light of a clearing.
-
On it stood a tower build of logs.
-
and a dark horse in it spoke,
-
Said with the voice of a man:
-
Oh, how welcome you are, Ilya Muromets,
-
I've been waiting for you a long time.
-
Prove your heroic strength -
-
and roll aside the 16 ton stone
-
then break open the oakwood door.
-
Ilya came galloping on the powerful steed
-
with his dauntless black power and speed
-
To stand up for the cause so justified:
-
Protect and preserve Russia's land with his might.
