My life is to play and to move forward with lightness | Anja Linder | TEDxParis
-
0:08 - 0:11As a small child, sitting on
the lap of my mother -
0:11 - 0:15who taught piano in private tuition
in the house of my childhood, -
0:15 - 0:17I was rocked by the music,
-
0:17 - 0:21and I watched all her fingers
browsing the piano keys. -
0:21 - 0:24As it was often the same pieces
that was returning, -
0:24 - 0:26Schumann, Mozart, Chopin,
-
0:26 - 0:30I knew the songs by heart
and I corrected the students by whistling. -
0:31 - 0:32In my family,
-
0:32 - 0:36education necessarily involves
learning an instrument, -
0:36 - 0:38and I chose the harp at age nine,
-
0:38 - 0:42after hearing Marielle Nordmann
play a concerto for harp -
0:42 - 0:45with the Strasbourg
Philharmonic Orchestra. -
0:45 - 0:49The heat, the roundness of tone,
the beauty of the instrument, -
0:49 - 0:53and its size which allows
almost to be hidden, -
0:53 - 0:55made me fall in love at first sight.
-
0:55 - 0:59It was this instrument and not another.
-
1:00 - 1:02After extensive musical studies,
-
1:02 - 1:06I was awarded with my soprano friend,
Nathalie Gaudefroy, -
1:06 - 1:10a first prize in the International
Chamber Music Competition in Arles. -
1:11 - 1:14This was followed by two wonderful years,
-
1:14 - 1:19rich in music, encounters,
trips, laughter, success, -
1:19 - 1:22because we were invited
in beautiful festivals -
1:22 - 1:25and were receiving a lot of proposals
for interesting projects. -
1:25 - 1:29I was leading the so intense
and creative life I have dreamed of -
1:29 - 1:30when I was a child.
-
1:31 - 1:37On July 6, 2001, there was a storm
at a concert where I was a spectator. -
1:38 - 1:41A plane tree has fallen upon the audience.
-
1:42 - 1:45I was knocked to the ground
and immobilized by the branches. -
1:46 - 1:47There were many dead,
-
1:47 - 1:51and I am one of the most
physically affected victims. -
1:52 - 1:55Despite the shock of the fall,
I was conscious, -
1:55 - 1:57and while trying to free myself
of the branches, -
1:57 - 2:00I realized that I was not able
to move my legs. -
2:01 - 2:03I immediately thought of the harp,
-
2:03 - 2:06because the legs are essential
to be able to play. -
2:07 - 2:11It is often not known, but the harp
is played with seven pedals. -
2:14 - 2:16I saw my life flash before my eyes,
-
2:16 - 2:19and I was terrified at the thought
of not being able to play. -
2:19 - 2:22For to me, in order to live
was necessarily to play the harp. -
2:24 - 2:28Following that, I experienced
the two most painful years of my life, -
2:28 - 2:32between the hospital
and the rehabilitation center. -
2:32 - 2:35I felt like I was in a nightmare,
-
2:36 - 2:38I had to get out of it
as quickly as possible, -
2:38 - 2:45to heal, to control the wheelchair,
and to manage all the negative words. -
2:47 - 2:51I was advised at the time
to give up the harp, -
2:51 - 2:54because of my inability
to use the pedals, -
2:54 - 2:59and to start practicing a parasport
and/or a new instrument as an amateur. -
2:59 - 3:02I was told that it would be better
that I make a career as a librarian, -
3:02 - 3:06or something sedentary,
because of my poor health. -
3:06 - 3:11I was told that any coquetry or femininity
was useless in a wheelchair. -
3:11 - 3:12So, knowing that for example,
-
3:12 - 3:15today where the dress code
was supposed to be jeans and shirt, -
3:15 - 3:19I found a way to come
in a long dress and lace, -
3:19 - 3:24you can imagine that these words
were almost a pain for me. -
3:25 - 3:30And the worst is that they told me
-
3:30 - 3:35I should give up the wish
to have a fulfilling love life, -
3:35 - 3:38because men do not stay
with a woman in a wheelchair. -
3:40 - 3:42I chose not to listen to these words.
-
3:43 - 3:47I did exactly the opposite
of everything they had advised me, -
3:47 - 3:52and as soon as I left the center,
I struggle to play again. -
3:53 - 3:57In this quest, I had the chance
to meet two men: -
3:57 - 4:01Jean-Marie Panterne,
the Director of the Instrumentarium, -
4:01 - 4:03and Marc Lamoureux,
-
4:03 - 4:10an exceptional engineer for whom like me,
the word "impossible" was not admissible. -
4:10 - 4:12Together,
-
4:12 - 4:17we have designed an automatic harp
that would allow me to play again. -
4:18 - 4:22This project took two years
to see the light of the day. -
4:22 - 4:26We faced some difficulties,
but it was exciting, -
4:26 - 4:31because we wanted to have together
a really satisfactory outcome. -
4:32 - 4:35It is, beyond our expectations,
-
4:35 - 4:39as the electro-pneumatic harp
allows you to play -
4:39 - 4:42through a simplified use of the pedals,
-
4:42 - 4:46a much larger repertoire
than the normal harp. -
4:46 - 4:50Some composers even wrote
for this new harp, -
4:50 - 4:54which is ultimately a step forward
in the history of the instrument. -
4:55 - 4:58Its name is "l'anjamatique"
-
4:58 - 5:01from my first name Anja and automatic,
-
5:01 - 5:04and I now teach it
at the Strasbourg Conservatory -
5:04 - 5:07to non-disabled people.
-
5:08 - 5:11I lost everything in a second,
-
5:11 - 5:15and it took years to rebuild
a life that matches my expectations. -
5:16 - 5:18This is the case right now.
-
5:18 - 5:20I am in love and loved,
-
5:20 - 5:23I play and I teach my instrument,
-
5:23 - 5:26and I work with talented partners.
-
5:27 - 5:31In the month of July,
I experienced an incredible moment. -
5:32 - 5:35Milan Kundera called me in person,
-
5:35 - 5:37to tell me he was giving me the permission
-
5:37 - 5:41to record excerpts from
The Unbearable Lightness of Being, -
5:41 - 5:46illustrated by musical pieces
by Schumann, Chopin, and Dvorak. -
5:46 - 5:49He told me that he had been moved
by my playing, -
5:49 - 5:54and I have perceived those words
as a kind of validation, -
5:54 - 5:56a blessing for all these struggles.
-
5:58 - 6:02I sincerely believe
that all the difficult moments, -
6:02 - 6:04as painful as they are,
-
6:05 - 6:12move us ahead as we aspire to a goal
and we make every effort to get there. -
6:12 - 6:15Nobody knows better than you
for what you're made for. -
6:16 - 6:20Disability still scares
and I never wanted to recognize myself -
6:20 - 6:23in the restricted vision
that some people have about it. -
6:23 - 6:28Because it is neither a handicap
nor a difference or a disease -
6:28 - 6:30that creates our identity.
-
6:30 - 6:35It is the energy and the love we put
to accomplish what is dearest to us. -
6:36 - 6:41My life is to play
and to move forward with lightness. -
6:49 - 6:52(Harp music: "Recuerdos de la Alhambra"
by Francesco Tarrega) -
10:28 - 10:29(Applause)

- My life is to play and to move forward with lightness | Anja Linder | TEDxParis
- Description:
-
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
After becoming paraplegic following an accident, Anja decided to fight to keep playing the harp, an instrument which requires the use of the legs. Through her the "Anjamatique" was born, an instrument taught to the non-disabled people today. - Video Language:

Thank-you for the beautiful inspiring words to remind us never to give up following your dreams...
I am very interested in this auto pedaling system. Could someone tell me how does the pedal system function and how can we go about in ordering one?!
