Using Negative Commands is Not Legalism - Tim Conway

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Sometimes people -
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    you can never please anybody,
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    and with James throwing
    everything out on the Internet,
  • 0:07 - 0:10
we get attacked from both sides.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    We get people that say
  • 0:12 - 0:17
that we don't deal with sin
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    and we're antinomian.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    But then we get charges
    that we're legalists.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
And brethren, I want to tell you this,
  • 0:28 - 0:34
    using negatives is not legalism.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Paul repeatedly tells these Christians
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    throughout these verses
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    not to do things.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Notice, Ephesians 4:26,
  • 0:43 - 0:47
"Do not let the sun go
    down on your anger."
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    V. 27, "Give no opportunity to the devil."
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    V. 28, "Let the thief no longer steal."
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    You know what it's saying?
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    Stop letting the sun go
    down on your anger.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Stop with unrighteous anger.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
Stop giving opportunity to the devil.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    Stop stealing.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    V. 29: Stop with the corrupting talk.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    V. 30: Stop grieving the Spirit.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Ch 5:3 - Stop looking at pornography.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    Stop with the sexual immorality.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
Ch 5:4 - Stop with the filthiness.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    Stop with foolish talk.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    Stop with crude joking.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Ch 5:7 - Stop being partners
  • 1:24 - 1:27
with people that are sexually immoral
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    and impure and covetous.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
Ch 5:11 - Stop taking part
  • 1:32 - 1:34
in the unfruitful works of darkness.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Ch 5:15 - Stop being unwise.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
Ch 5:17 - Stop being foolish.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
Ch 5:18 - Stop getting drunk.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Brethren, there's a place
    to say to Christians:
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    Stop it! Stop!
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    Stop that life!
  • 1:54 - 1:56
That's what he's saying to these people.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
You say, wow, that's all pretty negative.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
Yeah, there's a lot of positive in there.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
But what I'm saying is this:
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    When you tell people,
  • 2:04 - 2:05
"you need to stop doing that,"
  • 2:05 - 2:08
and you tell people these kind of things,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    that's not legalism.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    That is encouraging the
    same kind of godliness
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    that the Apostle Paul
  • 2:14 - 2:15
under the inspiration of the Spirit
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    is encouraging us with.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
Brethren, when you no longer live
  • 2:21 - 2:23
the way you used to live,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    you're going to stop doing
    a whole bunch of stuff
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    that you used to do.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    That's just a reality.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    We need to stop.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
We need to say to Christians: No longer!
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    No longer! Quit it!
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    Brethren, there's a place for
Christians to say to themselves -
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    speak to yourself -
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    That's it!
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    I'm done with that.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    Stop it.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Where are the Christians
  • 2:49 - 2:51
like I talked about years ago
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    in a message that I
    preached from Psalm 119,
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    but where are the Christians
  • 2:55 - 2:58
who like David are going to say:
  • 2:58 - 3:01
"I promise to keep Your words."
  • 3:01 - 3:04
The sermon Tim just referenced is called:
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Deliberate Holiness.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
And this excerpt that you just heard
  • 3:09 - 3:11
was taken from the full sermon:
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    No Longer Perishing in Futility
