-
0:06 - 0:07My mom
-
0:07 - 0:10came here when she was seven years old
-
0:10 - 0:11to New York.
-
0:11 - 0:14My grandfather, my maternal grandfather
-
0:14 - 0:16worked for the embassy.
-
0:16 - 0:18So he was posted in New York. So they all
-
0:18 - 0:20came to New York and she's been here
-
0:20 - 0:21ever since.
-
0:21 - 0:24So 40 something years, I think.
-
0:24 - 0:28And my dad, he came here for college,
-
0:28 - 0:31an engineer in San Jose. So
-
0:31 - 0:33he came, he studied and he just decided
-
0:33 - 0:34to live here.
-
0:34 - 0:38And that's my story.
-
0:38 - 0:40It starts off with my dad moving here
-
0:40 - 0:41for his job
-
0:41 - 0:44back in 2003 and
-
0:44 - 0:47that just left me and my mom back in the
-
0:47 - 0:48Philippines
-
0:48 - 0:52um for about two years before we moved
-
0:52 - 0:55to join suit with him and just join I
-
0:55 - 0:56mean just like live
-
0:56 - 0:58with him and my grandpa was already here
-
0:58 - 1:00prior, but I don't really know what year
-
1:00 - 1:01he moved.
-
1:01 - 1:04And yeah, we we just been here since
-
1:04 - 1:062005.
-
1:06 - 1:08Back in Philippines we were taught
-
1:08 - 1:09English as a second language,
-
1:09 - 1:12right? And I thought that coming here to
-
1:12 - 1:14the US I wouldn't really have a problem
-
1:14 - 1:14with that.
-
1:14 - 1:17However, it was really hard because like
-
1:17 - 1:17all
-
1:17 - 1:19everybody around me, like literally,
-
1:19 - 1:23everybody spoke fluent English and I'm
-
1:23 - 1:24still just like I know some words that
-
1:24 - 1:26they're saying but it's really
-
1:26 - 1:30like more complex just trying to like
-
1:30 - 1:32decipher what they're saying and all
-
1:32 - 1:33that and it's
-
1:33 - 1:35um it was hard going through that
-
1:35 - 1:39process, but eventually I
-
1:39 - 1:41I like learn to get along with it to
-
1:41 - 1:44like conform myself to the society.
-
1:44 - 1:47So my family comes from from mexico both
-
1:47 - 1:48my mom and my dad.
-
1:48 - 1:50And they came over in the 90s and they
-
1:50 - 1:52met each other like
-
1:52 - 1:56uh four years after they came over, and
-
1:56 - 1:59they met each other at work, and then
-
1:59 - 2:02they got together, and they had me and
-
2:02 - 2:04yeah, both of my parents were born in
-
2:04 - 2:05Egypt and
-
2:05 - 2:08lived there most of their lives all the
-
2:08 - 2:09way
-
2:09 - 2:11until college. They got married in Egypt
-
2:11 - 2:12and then my father decided that he
-
2:12 - 2:14wanted to come to America because
-
2:14 - 2:16it was the land of opportunity and
-
2:16 - 2:18dreaming and all that.
-
2:18 - 2:20My mother, they were both obviously like
-
2:20 - 2:22very torn to leave their family, but they
-
2:22 - 2:23left everything to come here so that me
-
2:23 - 2:26and my
-
2:26 - 2:28siblings could have a better life. My
-
2:28 - 2:30parents immigrated from
-
2:30 - 2:33Vietnam to here during the Vietnam war.
-
2:33 - 2:36So my dad, he came originally from China
-
2:36 - 2:40in Guangdong near Hong Kong and
-
2:40 - 2:44during the Vietnam war, he escaped from
-
2:44 - 2:47China through Vietnam and all the way
-
2:47 - 2:49through Malaysia as a vote person.
-
2:49 - 2:52So he went through a lot with his family
-
2:52 - 2:55and his four older sisters and his two
-
2:55 - 2:56parents.
-
2:56 - 2:58My dad and the rest of his sisters
-
2:58 - 3:00decided they wanted to go to America
-
3:00 - 3:02and really let their kids live the
-
3:02 - 3:03American dream
-
3:03 - 3:07and he was very adamant about wanting to
-
3:07 - 3:08stay in America
-
3:08 - 3:10seeing it as this wonderful country full
-
3:10 - 3:12of opportunities.
-
3:12 - 3:15So he went here when he was 21
-
3:15 - 3:18and he had to lie about his age to be
-
3:18 - 3:20able to go to
-
3:20 - 3:21an American high school. He went to San
-
3:21 - 3:24Jose high school which is very close by
-
3:24 - 3:26and he also graduated from San Jose
-
3:26 - 3:28state and
-
3:28 - 3:30he really took his education seriously,
-
3:30 - 3:32because he really wanted to provide for
-
3:32 - 3:33his family.
-
3:33 - 3:36And after everything was great he had a
-
3:36 - 3:36good job.
-
3:36 - 3:38He went back to Vietnam and that's where
-
3:38 - 3:40he met my mom.
-
3:40 - 3:42And my mom immigrated here, left
-
3:42 - 3:43everything she knew
-
3:43 - 3:47back in Vietnam and here we are
-
3:47 - 3:59with three kids and a happy family.
