Students' Immigration Stories

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [Music]
  • 0:06 - 0:10
My mom came here when she
was seven years old to New York.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    My grandfather,
    my maternal grandfather
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    worked for the embassy.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
So he was posted in New York,
So they all came to New York
  • 0:19 - 0:20
and she's been here ever since.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
So 40 something years, I think.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
And my dad, he came here for college,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    an engineer in San Jose.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    So he came, he studied
and he just decided to live here.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    And that's my story.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
It starts off with my dad
    moving here for his job
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    back in 2003
  • 0:44 - 0:48
and that just left me and
my mom back in the Philippines
  • 0:48 - 0:52
um for about two years before we moved
  • 0:52 - 0:56
to join suit with him and
just join I mean just like live
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    with him and my grandpa
    was already here prior,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    but I don't really know
    what year he moved.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    And yeah,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
We just been here since 2005.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
Back in Philippines we were taught
English as a second language, right?
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    And I thought that
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    coming here to the US
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    I wouldn't really have
    a problem with that.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    However, it was really
    hard because like
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    all everybody around me,
    like literally,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
everybody spoke fluent English and I'm
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    still just like I know
    some words that
  • 1:24 - 1:27
they're saying but it's really like
  • 1:28 - 1:30
more complex just trying to like
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    decipher what they're
    saying and all that
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and it's um, it was hard
    going through that process,
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    but eventually I
  • 1:39 - 1:41
I like learn to get along with it to
  • 1:41 - 1:44
like conform myself to the society.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    So my family comes from
Mexico both my mom and my dad.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
And they came over in the 90s and
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    they met each other like
  • 1:52 - 1:56
uh four years after they came over, and
  • 1:56 - 1:59
they met each other at work, and then
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    they got together,
and they had me and yeah.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
Both of my parents were born in Egypt
  • 2:05 - 2:10
and lived there most of their
lives all the way until college.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    They got married in Egypt
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    and then my father decided
that he wanted to come to America because
  • 2:14 - 2:17
it was the land of opportunity
    and dreaming and all that.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
My mother, they were both obviously like
  • 2:20 - 2:22
very torn to leave their family but they,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    left everything to come
here so that me and my
  • 2:26 - 2:27
siblings could have a better life.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    My parents immigrated from
  • 2:30 - 2:33
Vietnam to here during the Vietnam war.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
So my dad, he came originally from China
  • 2:36 - 2:40
in Guangdong near Hong Kong and
  • 2:40 - 2:44
during the Vietnam war, he escaped from
  • 2:44 - 2:47
China through Vietnam and all the way
  • 2:47 - 2:49
through Malaysia as a vote person.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
So he went through a lot with his family
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    and his four older sisters
    and his two parents.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
My dad and the rest of his sisters
  • 2:58 - 3:00
decided they wanted to go to America
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    and really let their kids
    live the American dream
  • 3:03 - 3:08
    and he was very adamant
about wanting to stay in America
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    seeing it as this wonderful
    country full of opportunities.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
So he went here when he was 21
  • 3:15 - 3:21
and he had to lie about his age to be
able to go to an American high school.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
He went to San Jose high
school which is very close by
  • 3:24 - 3:27
and he also graduated from San Jose state
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    and he really took his
    education seriously,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    because he really wanted
    to provide for his family.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    And after everything was
great he had a good job.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
He went back to Vietnam and
that's where he met my mom.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    And my mom immigrated here
    left everything she knew
  • 3:43 - 3:50
back in Vietnam and here we are
with three kids and a happy family.
