Know your inner saboteurs | Shirzad Chamine | TEDxStanford
-
0:12 - 0:17I'd like to start
by making one thing very clear. -
0:17 - 0:19I want you to know that I am
-
0:19 - 0:21absolutely,
-
0:21 - 0:22incredibly
-
0:22 - 0:24and totally
-
0:24 - 0:26awesome!
-
0:26 - 0:28(Laughter) (Applause)
-
0:32 - 0:36Now, before you start thinking
that I have a problem with humility, -
0:36 - 0:38which I don't,
-
0:38 - 0:39(Laughter)
-
0:41 - 0:43let me add something important.
-
0:43 - 0:45I believe you, too, are awesome!
-
0:46 - 0:47Is that better now?
-
0:47 - 0:49(Audience) Yes.
-
0:49 - 0:50(Applause)
-
0:50 - 0:54But I also believe, based on my research,
-
0:54 - 0:58that there is - no, it's me, okay.
-
0:59 - 1:02But I also believe, based on my research,
-
1:02 - 1:05that there's an 80% probability
-
1:05 - 1:10that you have no idea
how truly magnificent you really are. -
1:11 - 1:13You used to know, but you've forgotten.
-
1:15 - 1:16I'm here to show you
-
1:16 - 1:22the science behind how you
gradually forget your true self, -
1:23 - 1:25your true potential,
-
1:25 - 1:29and how you can rediscover and unleash
-
1:29 - 1:34an even happier and more capable
version of yourself, -
1:34 - 1:38the true magnificent you!
-
1:38 - 1:40Is that cool?
-
1:40 - 1:42Great!
-
1:43 - 1:48I lecture on this topic,
right here at Stanford, -
1:48 - 1:53and my work is based on extensive research
in neuroscience and psychology. -
1:53 - 1:56I'd like to show you
my most important evidence -
1:56 - 2:01proving that you used to know
how amazing you really are! -
2:01 - 2:03Would you like to see that evidence?
-
2:03 - 2:05Well, here it is.
-
2:06 - 2:09Do you think she knows
how magnificent she is? -
2:09 - 2:11Absolutely. She is radiating with it.
-
2:11 - 2:13What about him?
-
2:13 - 2:16Do you think he knows
how magnificent he is? -
2:16 - 2:20Every strand of his hair
knows how magnificent he is. -
2:20 - 2:22(Laughter)
-
2:22 - 2:24And what about these two?
-
2:24 - 2:29I know they know
because they are my precious kids, -
2:29 - 2:30Tisa and Kion.
-
2:31 - 2:32The point is this:
-
2:32 - 2:37you were born as a unique
and magnificent being -
2:37 - 2:39and you used to know it!
-
2:41 - 2:43But what about this one?
-
2:44 - 2:47Do you think he knows
how magnificent he is? -
2:47 - 2:49He actually has no clue;
-
2:49 - 2:50he used to know,
-
2:50 - 2:54but by the time this picture is taken,
he no longer remembers. -
2:55 - 2:57By the way, this is me.
-
2:58 - 2:59Adorable, right?
-
2:59 - 3:01(Laughter)
-
3:01 - 3:02I told you.
-
3:02 - 3:03(Laughter)
-
3:04 - 3:11So why and how did I begin
to forget who I really am? -
3:15 - 3:19I was born a happy kid
in a troubled household. -
3:19 - 3:24I lived with four siblings and my parents
in a two-bedroom apartment in a ghetto. -
3:24 - 3:29My father was scary, angry
and unpredictably violent. -
3:29 - 3:31My mother was always
running around terrified. -
3:31 - 3:34I wasn't getting much love.
-
3:35 - 3:40Now, since my life
was in my parents' hands, -
3:40 - 3:46it would've been absolutely terrifying
for me to admit that they were flawed. -
3:46 - 3:48So, instead, a voice
started forming in my head -
3:48 - 3:51and saying that my parents were perfect
-
3:51 - 3:57and the reason they didn't love me
was because I was unworthy of their love. -
3:57 - 4:01I now call this voice the "Judge."
-
4:02 - 4:05Of course, once the Judge
started judging me, -
4:05 - 4:08it also had to start judging
everybody else around me -
4:08 - 4:10so that I would be less terrified.
-
4:10 - 4:13I grew up completely unaware
-
4:13 - 4:18that this Judge character was beginning
to take control in my mind. -
4:18 - 4:21I only discovered it 27 years later
-
4:21 - 4:24in an MBA class, right here at Stanford.
-
4:25 - 4:29We were divided into groups
of 12 MBA students sitting in a circle, -
4:29 - 4:32sharing our emotions openly.
-
4:32 - 4:36One of my classmates in the circle
turned to me and said nervously, -
4:36 - 4:38"Shirzad, this is really hard
for me to tell you, -
4:38 - 4:43but I often feel harshly judged by you,
and it really bothers me." -
4:45 - 4:46I turned to him and said,
-
4:46 - 4:49"John, thank you so much
for telling me this. -
4:49 - 4:51This is very helpful feedback."
-
4:52 - 4:54In the back of my mind, I was thinking,
-
4:54 - 4:56"Well, of course you feel judged
by me, you idiot. -
4:56 - 4:58(Laughter)
-
5:00 - 5:02You are the biggest loser in this group.
-
5:02 - 5:04(Laughter)
-
5:05 - 5:09How else do you expect me
to think of you?" -
5:10 - 5:14But then a second person, a third person
and a fourth person in the group -
5:14 - 5:16said exactly the same thing.
-
5:16 - 5:17I kept thanking them politely
-
5:17 - 5:22while thinking, "What losers,
blaming me for their insecurity." -
5:24 - 5:27I really - I did think
like that, trust me. -
5:27 - 5:33But somehow the fifth person
finally got through. -
5:33 - 5:34All of a sudden, I realized,
-
5:34 - 5:38"Oh my God, they are right.
I judge everything instantly. -
5:38 - 5:40This Judge character in my head
-
5:40 - 5:45was constantly and brutally
beating down not only others, but myself. -
5:46 - 5:49It was the invisible character in my head.
-
5:49 - 5:54It was the invisible lens
that distorted my reality. -
5:55 - 5:59And that discovery changed my life.
-
6:03 - 6:08Since this invisible character,
Judge character in my head, -
6:08 - 6:09secretly sabotaged me,
-
6:09 - 6:12I called him a "Saboteur."
-
6:12 - 6:16I later discovered that in addition
to the Judge Saboteur, -
6:16 - 6:21there are nine other Saboteurs,
-
6:21 - 6:25like the Controller, Stickler and Victim.
-
6:26 - 6:29Even in a perfectly happy childhood,
-
6:29 - 6:32you still develop
a couple of these Saboteurs -
6:32 - 6:37as a coping mechanisms
as a vulnerable kid. -
6:37 - 6:41For example, you might develop
Controller tendencies -
6:41 - 6:45to feel safer in a chaotic environment
-
6:45 - 6:49or become the Victim
to get more attention. -
6:49 - 6:54The problem is that these Saboteurs
become the invisible masters in your head, -
6:54 - 6:57just like my Judge had.
-
6:57 - 7:01They pretend they are you,
but they aren't you. -
7:02 - 7:07That's how you forget who you really are.
-
7:14 - 7:17A war is constantly raging
inside your head -
7:17 - 7:21between your Saboteurs
and your original true self, -
7:21 - 7:24whom I call your Sage.
-
7:24 - 7:28These are based on entirely different
regions of your brain. -
7:28 - 7:32Your Saboteurs are based
on the survival-brain region, -
7:32 - 7:38which is made up mostly of the brain stem,
limbic system and parts of the left brain. -
7:38 - 7:42Your Sage is based
on the positive-intelligence brain, -
7:42 - 7:45which is made up mostly
of the middle prefrontal cortex, -
7:45 - 7:49ACC insular cortex
and parts of the right brain. -
7:49 - 7:54Here is a fascinating insight
and clue to your happiness. -
7:54 - 8:00Look at this: the survival-brain region
and its Saboteurs are wired, -
8:00 - 8:04are neurochemically wired
to feel stress and unhappiness. -
8:04 - 8:07They just can't help themselves.
-
8:07 - 8:10If you want to feel consistently happier,
-
8:10 - 8:15you must learn to strengthen your Sage
and weaken your Saboteurs. -
8:15 - 8:19It's just a matter
of neurochemical science. -
8:22 - 8:24One of the things
that I can guarantee you, -
8:24 - 8:26based on my experience,
-
8:26 - 8:32is that you can achieve all the great
wealth and success in the world -
8:32 - 8:37and still feel deeply unhappy
because of your Saboteurs. -
8:37 - 8:40I once ran a leadership
development seminar -
8:40 - 8:43for more than 100 CEOs and presidents
-
8:43 - 8:48who are all extremely successful
and look perfectly happy on the outside. -
8:48 - 8:54I told them, "Look, I have coached
too many successful CEOs and billionaires -
8:54 - 8:59to be still fooled by your facade
of confidence and happiness." -
8:59 - 9:03So I asked them to anonymously
write on an index card -
9:03 - 9:09one secret they never shared
about how they really felt inside. -
9:09 - 9:13With their permission,
I'd like to read some of those cards. -
9:17 - 9:21"I am terrified of failing
as the leader of my business." -
9:22 - 9:25"I am rarely at peace with myself."
-
9:26 - 9:30"I fear dying of an early age
from overwork and stress." -
9:31 - 9:33"I am feeling very sad and lonely,
-
9:33 - 9:37and the antidepressants I'm on
don't seem to be helping." -
9:38 - 9:43"I battle with constantly ranking
and judging everyone around me." -
9:44 - 9:48"I have no idea how
to truly connect with my only son." -
9:49 - 9:53"My air of confidence is false."
-
9:54 - 9:58"I am self-destructive,
and I don't know why." -
9:59 - 10:03"I don't love myself very much."
-
10:06 - 10:10"I lack strength in resisting
temptations and desires." -
10:11 - 10:14"I often feel like I'm a fraud."
-
10:15 - 10:19"I worry my materialism
is hurting my children." -
10:20 - 10:25"I have been abusing drugs and alcohol
to deal with stress." -
10:25 - 10:30I wish I could run away
for one year - just be alone." -
10:31 - 10:33And finally,
-
10:34 - 10:37"I'm afraid of ending up like my father,
-
10:37 - 10:41who is unloved and will die alone."
-
10:52 - 10:54This is the story of our lives, folks.
-
10:55 - 10:59I have worked with people
ranging from these CEOs -
10:59 - 11:04to people on the manufacturing floor
without high school diplomas. -
11:04 - 11:08Regardless of our level
of wealth or success, -
11:08 - 11:12these Saboteurs are still there,
tormenting us. -
11:13 - 11:17I used to think I was particularly
broken and screwed up. -
11:18 - 11:20What a relief to discover
-
11:21 - 11:25that we are all screwed up
by our Saboteurs. -
11:25 - 11:26(Laughter)
-
11:28 - 11:31So, who are these Saboteurs?
-
11:31 - 11:32In my research,
-
11:32 - 11:37I have classified the Saboteurs
based on their motivation -
11:37 - 11:40for independence, acceptance or security
-
11:40 - 11:44and their style of assert, earn or avoid.
-
11:44 - 11:50This grid shows
the gang of nine Saboteurs. -
11:50 - 11:54They are Controller,
Hyper-Achiever, Restless, -
11:54 - 11:57Stickler, Pleaser, Hyper-Vigilant,
-
11:58 - 12:01and Avoider, Victim, Hyper-Rational.
-
12:01 - 12:03What a cast of characters.
-
12:03 - 12:05(Laughter)
-
12:05 - 12:08Everyone has the master Judge Saboteur
-
12:08 - 12:13in addition to at least one
from this gang of nine. -
12:14 - 12:19Now, before you are able
to weaken these Saboteurs, -
12:19 - 12:23you need to be able to catch them
in your head, red-handed. -
12:25 - 12:29Imagine that you're in the middle
of an important project -
12:30 - 12:34and have just learned that you've
completely failed the midway milestones. -
12:34 - 12:40Here is how some of your Saboteurs
in your head might be talking. -
12:41 - 12:42Judge -
-
12:44 - 12:49"Oh, I'm a loser, just a stupid loser.
-
12:49 - 12:52Everything will start crashing down now."
-
12:53 - 12:55Controller -
-
12:56 - 13:00"But my way's always the right way.
-
13:00 - 13:03Someone else must have screwed up."
-
13:03 - 13:05(Laughter)
-
13:05 - 13:07Victim -
-
13:08 - 13:12"Oh, they did it to me again.
-
13:12 - 13:17Just watch. That next lightning
will be striking right here!" -
13:18 - 13:20Ow, that hurt.
-
13:20 - 13:21(Laughter)
-
13:21 - 13:23Stickler -
-
13:24 - 13:30"I knew it! That report cover
used the wrong shade of blue." -
13:33 - 13:34Avoider -
-
13:35 - 13:41"Oh, there's still plenty of time.
I wonder where I should go for lunch. -
13:41 - 13:42(Laughter)
-
13:44 - 13:45Hyper-Vigilant -
-
13:47 - 13:49(Laughter)
-
13:49 - 13:53That's me tearing my hair out -
if I still had any. -
13:53 - 13:57And so on with the other five Saboteurs.
-
13:57 - 14:02Now, once you catch
a Saboteur in your mind, -
14:02 - 14:03what you want to do
-
14:03 - 14:06is just label that thought
as "Saboteur" and let it go -
14:06 - 14:08instead of trusting it or pursuing it.
-
14:08 - 14:12Just notice the difference
between me saying "I will fail tomorrow" -
14:12 - 14:17versus "My pesky Judge Saboteur
says I'll fail tomorrow." -
14:17 - 14:19You feel the difference?
-
14:19 - 14:25You weaken your Saboteurs
by exposing and labeling them. -
14:26 - 14:32Now, how would your Sage respond
in the same exact scenario? -
14:32 - 14:36One of the most brilliant things
about your Sage is the Sage perspective. -
14:36 - 14:42Every outcome or circumstance
can be turned into an opportunity. -
14:42 - 14:49So you ask, "How do I turn my failure
in this project into an opportunity?" -
14:49 - 14:54This perspective changes everything.
-
14:54 - 14:59With this perspective, you keep
the positive-intelligence brain activated, -
14:59 - 15:05which gives you access
to five great Sage powers. -
15:05 - 15:07Empathize.
-
15:07 - 15:09Your Sage knows
-
15:09 - 15:12that beating yourself down
when you're already down -
15:12 - 15:14is absolutely insane.
-
15:14 - 15:18So you feel compassion for yourself
and others as fallible humans. -
15:18 - 15:22This keeps you energized and positive.
-
15:23 - 15:24Explore.
-
15:25 - 15:30You become the fascinated
explorer kid in the woods, -
15:30 - 15:33turning over every rock
to see what's underneath it. -
15:33 - 15:35You become fascinated to discover
-
15:35 - 15:40all the factors contributing
to your project's failure. -
15:40 - 15:43You discover things
you couldn't have seen -
15:43 - 15:45if you were upset or defensive.
-
15:46 - 15:48Innovate.
-
15:48 - 15:54You become the innovative kid
on the beach, building sandcastles again. -
15:54 - 16:00Since your positive-intelligence brain
is wired for creativity, -
16:00 - 16:04you can take all of these discoveries
about your project's failure -
16:04 - 16:08into creative new solutions
for the project. -
16:09 - 16:15And in the interest of time,
you then navigate by choosing a direction -
16:15 - 16:20and move into fearless, bold action.
-
16:20 - 16:25Your Sage performs a lot better
and remains positive -
16:26 - 16:29even in the middle of this crisis.
-
16:30 - 16:32Now, you would only be able
to perform this way -
16:32 - 16:35if you have strong Sage muscles.
-
16:35 - 16:38Functional MRI of the brain shows
-
16:38 - 16:42that one technique
to build powerful Sage muscles -
16:42 - 16:47is to shift your attention
to one physical sensation for ten seconds -
16:47 - 16:50a few times every hour,
-
16:50 - 16:52a few reps an hour.
-
16:52 - 16:55This leads to some
surprising recommendations. -
16:55 - 16:59For example, if you want
to perform better in your job, -
16:59 - 17:05then really, really taste
that bite of your crunchy apple, -
17:06 - 17:11really see the hundred shades of color
in your friend's eyes, -
17:11 - 17:18or hug your loved one so attentively
that you feel her heartbeat. -
17:20 - 17:24This, surprisingly,
sounds too good to be true -
17:24 - 17:28until you study the neuroscience evidence.
-
17:31 - 17:35In order to track your progress,
we can now actually measure -
17:35 - 17:39the strength of your Sage muscles
versus your Saboteurs', -
17:39 - 17:43based on your emotions
in a typical 24-hour period. -
17:43 - 17:45We have defined this ratio
-
17:45 - 17:48as your positive intelligence
quotient or "PQ." -
17:48 - 17:51Independent researchers have now shown
-
17:51 - 17:55that with increased PQ,
people are far happier and less stressed. -
17:56 - 17:59They also perform much better.
-
17:59 - 18:03For example, almost 40% better in sales
-
18:03 - 18:06and a third better
in team performance metrics. -
18:06 - 18:12Everyone can learn to strengthen
their Sage muscles with a little practice. -
18:13 - 18:16And finally,
-
18:16 - 18:22you can help strengthen the Sage
in your loved ones. -
18:23 - 18:27Unlike my daughter, Tisa,
my son, Kion, loves tickling. -
18:27 - 18:31So I have invented a game with him
-
18:31 - 18:35where I start tickling him and stop
only if he gives me all the right answers. -
18:35 - 18:37So I start tickling him and ask,
-
18:37 - 18:40"Kion, why do I love you so much?"
-
18:40 - 18:42He has learned to say, and he says,
-
18:42 - 18:45"I don't know, Daddy.
Why do you love me so much?" -
18:45 - 18:49I ask, "Is it because you're so handsome?"
-
18:49 - 18:53I know, it's his mother's genes - right? -
you don't have to tell me that. -
18:53 - 18:54(Laughter)
-
18:55 - 18:57And he has learned to say, and he says,
-
18:57 - 18:59"No, Daddy, it isn't
because I am handsome." -
18:59 - 19:01I ask, "Is it because
you get good grades?" -
19:01 - 19:02"No, Daddy, it isn't."
-
19:02 - 19:05"Is it because you're good in sports?"
"No, Daddy, it isn't." -
19:05 - 19:07So I go down a long list
of his great qualities, -
19:07 - 19:09and he keeps saying,
"No, Daddy, it isn't." -
19:09 - 19:12So at the end,
I pretend great frustration, -
19:12 - 19:15and I say, "So why is it, Kion,
why do I love you so much?" -
19:15 - 19:17And he has learned to say, and he says,
-
19:17 - 19:20"Daddy, it's because I am me!"
-
19:32 - 19:35Daddy, it's because I am me!
-
19:37 - 19:41His beautiful true self, his Sage.
-
19:44 - 19:46What about you?
-
19:49 - 19:51What would life be like
-
19:51 - 19:56if you fully reclaimed
your beautiful true self, -
19:56 - 19:58your Sage?
-
20:00 - 20:06What would be the gift of that to you,
to your loved ones, to our world? -
20:08 - 20:10What would become possible then?
-

- Title:
- Know your inner saboteurs | Shirzad Chamine | TEDxStanford
- Description:
-
According to Shirzad Chamine, our positive intelligence quotient, PQ, measures the percentage of time our mind serves us well, not sabotages us. His work exposes ten well-disguised mental saboteurs and shares how to defeat them. While IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence) contribute to our maximum potential, it is PQ that determines how much of that potential we actually achieve.
Professor Shirzad Chamine is author of the New York Times' bestseller, "Positive Intelligence." Chamine is chairman emeritus of CTI, the largest coachtraining organization in the world. Formerly, he was CEO of an enterprise software company. His academic background includes PhD studies in neuroscience, a BA in psychology, an MS in electrical engineering and an MBA from Stanford.
