Harry Potter's die-hard fans must be really excited right now.

Because Fantastic Beasts: the Crimes of Grindewald is about to show.
-
I don't know whether you're excited or not, but I am.
-
So, I think the name Grindewald, despite being mentioned in the main story,
-
is present only in the last book.
-
I think the 7th one is not re-read by much, comparing to the 1st or the 2nd.
-
So, today, I'm gonna tell you the story of Grindelwald.
-
Who is he? How important is he? Why must there be a sequel named after him?
-
I don't wanna waste time, but before we start, let me remind you to follow me on various social media.

[Grindelwald by Point of View]
-
Gellert Grindelwald was a very powerful dark wizard,
-
even before the era of the darkest wizard, Lord Voldemort.
-
This Grindelwald had caused a few global-scale catastrophic events.
-
His deeds shaped the wizard world as we know it,
-
and almost turned the world upside down, only if something hadn't happened first.
-
But first, let's hear about the story of his life.
-
From birth and through childhood. How did he grow to be this dark wizard?
-
Up until now, which means before the film comes out,
-
we don't know how he grew up. We only know that he might be a pure blood, or a half-blood,
-
meaning he grew up in a normal wizard society.
-
He attended a wizarding school called Durmstrang.
-
Remember when they had a triwizard tournament, there were three schools in the competition.
-
Durmstrang was one of them, with Viktor Krum as the representative.
-
If you ask what Durmstrang's reputation is,
-
you might remember that in the novels, Dreco Malfoy usually complained that,
-
"I don't wanna study in Hogwarts anymore! I wanna be in Durmstrang,
-
"because in Durmstrang, you don't have to study defense against the dark arts. You get to study dark arts."
-
That means Durmstrang was reputative about its dark arts course.
-
Grindelwald got to learn a lot about dark arts there,
-
and he showed to be an outstanding student in his class. One could say he's a genius.
-
Also, he was very interested in a thing called 'the Deathly Hallows.'
-
Many of you should remember the sign consisting triangle, circle and a straight line.
-
Let's just not get into details and say that it means Elder wand, resurrection stone and invisibility cloak.
-
It is believed that whoever possesses all three objects will be the Master of Death.
-
Grindelwald was so obsessed with this. He wanted to be the Master of Death.
-
He got so obsessed that he used the Deathly Hallows symbol as his personal symbol.
-
After studying in Durmstrang until he's 16,
-
even Durmstrang, a school that knew dark arts well, still felt that Grindelwald was too dark.
-
Because Grindelwald had done an unknown experiment on someone in the school,
-
he was expelled at the age of 16.
-
When he was expelled, he carved the Deathly Hallows symbol on the wall of the school, and it's been there since then.
-
It seems that now you can go and take a picture of this tourist attraction, just to be in trend.
-
Just kidding!
-
Expelling Grindelwald didn't help, though, because he was already smart.
-
He had more knowledge than what the school could ever give him.
-
And now there's no more rules to keep him down.
-
So, he turned to studying the dark arts by himself.
-
He started with going to Godric's Hollow.
-
Remember this place? It's Harry Potter's birthplace, where his parents lived.
-
They believed that it's the home of the first owner of the invisibility cloak.
-
After watching every Harry Potter film, we have come to know that this is correct.
-
The owner of that cloak was Harry's ancestor, who had been living there for a long time.
-
There, Grindelwald had a relative named Bathilda Bagshot.
-
She was the one who wrote the history book that Harry had to study.
-
Moreover, she was Harry's parents' neighbour.
-
You might remember her as the one possessed by Nagini in the 7th book.
-
She was Grindelwald's relative, and he went to live there with her.
-
As you might expect from someone who wrote the History book, her house consisted of so many books.
-
Grindelwald read all of them, gathering knowledge so that he could find the Deathly Hollows and develop his skills.
-
Godric's Hollow was also a residence of another important person,
-
that is, Albus Dumbledore. His house was located there.
-
Back then, Dumbledore was an orphan who lived with a younger brother (Aberforth) and a younger sister (Ariana).
-
Dumbledore's sister was bullied by muggles, causing her a mental breakdown.
-
She became unstable, always ready to burst out her magic power and cause chaos.
-
That's why their father took revenge on the muggles,
-
and that meant jail for the father.
-
So, their mother stayed and cared for the three siblings,
-
until one day the sister bursted, killing the mother.
-
So, Dumbledore became the head of the family, while his inside was traumatised.
-
When these two met, as two people who were both smarter than their own age,
-
they became friends right away, and hung out all day all night.
-
They had a lot in common
-
They were both interested in the Deathly Hallows.
-
Dumbledore thought that 'if I get to be the Master of Death, my life will be better,
-
'because I can use the resurrection stone to solve my family problem.'
-
While Grindelwald wanted to be the Master of Death so that he would be able to control Inferi,
-
or the walking dead of the wizard world. He wanted to make the army out of them.
-
Even though the two didn't discuss this issue, they had one common interest,
-
which Grindelwald persuaded Dumbledore to believed.
-
He asked 'why should the wizards and witches hide from muggles?
-
'We are smarter and more powerful. Why don't we govern those who are inferior to us?'
-
Dumbledore had to agree, because he himself also hated muggles for ruining his family.
-
That's how Dumbledore came up with the phrase 'For the Greater Good.'
-
He believed that they sometimes had to use force to make things better.
-
If one had to sacrifice for the greater good, they must do it.
-
And Grindelwald used that phrase as his personal slogan.
-
They continued to be good friends, until one day they agreed to travel the world together,
-
to seek for Elder wand, resurrection stone and invisibility cloak.
-
Could Grindelwald go? Of course, but he wanted Dumbledore to go with him.
-
Could Dumbledore go? No! Because he had to take care of his sister and brother.
-
If he took his sister with him, it'd be like carrying a time bomb.
-
He couldn't just leave his sister to his brother.
-
Being a teenager, Dumbledore obviously hated that he had to take this responsibility.
-
Eventually, they argued. Alberforth wouldn't let him go with Grendelwald,
-
telling him that it's a bad and villainous idea, to go and rule over muggles.
-
In that event, Grindelwald, being a dark arts lover he was, got mad and tried to curse Alberforth.
-
When Dumbledore saw that, he turned to fight Grindelwald instead.
-
So, the three were fighting, while an unstable girl sat there and watched.
-
Then, a curse defected and hit Dumbledore's sister, and she died!
-
She died, just like that.
-
Dumbledore promptly blamed it on Grindelwald, saying that he killed the sister.
-
That forced Grindelwald to flee from Britain.
-
After that, he went to gather his power and respect from places,
-
staying true to his ideology that he'd take over the world.
-
Along the way, he acquired the Elder wand by stealing it from a wandmaker called Mykew Gregorovitch.
-
He cursed the guy with the stunning spell and stole the wand from him.
-
This totally changed the perception about the Elder wand.
-
It was believed that this wand was the most powerful wand, and whoever owns it will have additional powers.
-
And this wand can only change owner by killing the old one.
-
However, the way Grindelwald took it made everyone realised that you don't have to kill,
-
you can just win it.
-
After acquiring the wand, Grindelwald wrecked chaos all over Europe and the US.
-
He barely escaped from the hands of the US Ministry of Magic.
-
This was where the first Fantastic Beasts film began, with Grindelwald disguised as a person in the ministry,
-
met Newt Scamander, and searched for Obscurus, a child with contained magic.
-
Grindelwald saw that it would be a pathway into showing the magic world to the muggles.
-
His main purpose was to reveal the magic world to everyone,
-
and that he'd rule over them.
-
I'll not go into details, so just skip over to the end, where Grindelwald was captured,
-
and then jailed in the US.
-
This is not a spoiler, since all the 7 books have already told you about all this.
-
It's just that they go into more details.
-
What we know from the books is that after the capture, Grindelwald managed to break out.
-
And he brought chaos all over the places for many years.
-
Eventually, people turned to Dumbledore, saying that he's the mightiest wizard,
-
and he might be the only chance to stop Grindelwald.
-
Dumbledore had always tried to avoid it, and if you want to know why,
-
it seems that Dumbledore later admitted it to Harry.
-
He said that, in the night when they fought, Grindelwald must know that whose curse killed Dumbledore's sister.
-
Dumblerdore was afraid that Grindelwald would expose that it was Dumbledore's own spell.
-
However, Dumbledore, being a transfiguration professor at Hogwarts at that time, had to take responsibility,
-
and so he went to fight Grindelwald.
-
They had a dual, and it's been said that the dual was the biggest one the wizard world has ever witnessed.
-
Whoever waiting to see the 2nd Fantastic Beasts must be expecting this particular scene.
-
After that event, Dumbledore won over Grindelwald, and locked him up in a prison.
-
Grindelwald lived there until the last day of his life,
-
which was recorded in the 7th book, where Lord Voldemort tried to find the Elder wand,
-
and he broke into the prison, because he heard that the last owner of Elder wand was Grindelwald.
-
So he went to find out where the wand was.
-
In the prison, Grindelwald teased Voldemort.
-
Voldemort thought that he'd encounter an old guy with no power, who's been in prison for over 40 years. He must be sad and pathetic.
-
But when he arrived, he found that Grindelwald wasn't afraid at all.
-
He was like, 'I have been waiting for you to come and kill me.'
-
'I know about you and know that you want the wand, but you will not have it!'
-
Grindelwald teased Voldemort until he lost his temper and killed the old man.
-
That ended the life of the greatest dark wizard of his time.
-
This is the story of Gellert Grindelwald as we know it from the Harry Potter novels.
-
Hope this makes you watch the 2nd Fantastic Beasts with a better understanding.

-
Actually, there's a rumour that hasn't been answered in either of the books.
-
We know from J.K.Rowling that Dumbledore was gay.
-
And it seems that there were something more between Dumbledore and Grindelwald,
-
not just friends, but also a bit of a bromance.
-
I don't know whether Fantastic Beasts will acknowledge this tension or not.
-
You shippers can wait for the moments, while non-shippers are invited to watch how great these two were.
-
In Harry Potter, Dumbledore was already old, and he couldn't compare to Voldemort.
-
But this, they were of same age, must be real fun! I'm excited already!!
