0:11 - 0:12Hi! I’m Emily and I’m Sean
-
0:12 - 0:16And we’re students at Wilkes Community College and members of the SAGE program.
-
0:16 - 0:20SAGE stands for Supporting Academic Goals for Education.
-
0:20 - 0:22Today we’re going to help you, as family members,
-
0:22 - 0:24learn how you can support those goals
-
0:24 - 0:26and how you can help your college student succeed.
-
0:26 - 0:30And show you just a few things that Wilkes Community College has to offer for your college student.
-
0:30 - 0:31music....
-
0:34 - 0:40The U.S. Census has released data that proves it! Adults with college degrees have higher earnings than those with less education.
-
0:40 - 0:43Homework in college is way different than it is in high school.
-
0:43 - 0:48In fact, it is actually recommended that for every hour you spend in the classroom,
-
0:48 - 0:50you need to spend about three hours studying for class.
-
0:50 - 0:56So, if your college student has about a three hour class each week, that means he needs to spend about nine hours a week to study.
-
0:56 - 1:00So it’s really helpful if the family can understand how much quiet time he needs.
-
1:00 - 1:04Your student may spend a lot of time around the campus of Wilkes Community College
-
1:04 - 1:10because there are many services that are supplied for them such as computers, Wi-Fi, and printing services.
-
1:10 - 1:16Despite these services, your student still needs a lot of time to prepare and study for class.
-
1:16 - 1:19So, support your student by giving him plenty of quiet time to study.
-
1:19 - 1:22You can’t focus when you’re not well rested,
-
1:22 - 1:28so make sure your college student takes regular breaks to assure their academic success.
-
1:28 - 1:35This may be the first time your college student has had to balance work, school, child care, and social activities,
-
1:35 - 1:37but there are many things you can do to assist them,
-
1:37 - 1:42such as offer to do a chore, go grocery shopping, and even cook a meal or two.
-
1:42 - 1:48College students need encouragement, so it’s important to show an interest in what they’re learning.
-
1:48 - 1:54After all, communication is such an important key to interpersonal relationships, but especially those within the family.
-
1:54 - 1:59So, don’t forget to take an interest in what they’re learning and their college experience.
-
1:59 - 2:02And most of all, don’t forget to tell them you’re proud of them!
-
2:02 - 2:07Be patient! It’s important for your student to know that you’re interested and that you care!
-
2:07 - 2:15Many students are going through this experience for the very first time, and there is a learning curve. So, remember to be patient with yourself and others.
-
2:15 - 2:19Attending college isn’t just about getting a higher paying job.
-
2:19 - 2:23It’s about self-empowerment and becoming a better person.
-
2:23 - 2:26And ensuring a brighter future!
