unClosing special content (unDocumentary)
-
0:05 - 0:11We thought it would be interesting
to start a network of spaces -
0:11 - 0:17And to draw on existing models that
seem to be working, like hackerspaces -
0:17 - 0:22but also by borrowing in some ways
from the communes -
0:22 - 0:24and thinking about why they failed.
-
0:24 - 0:28And that's kind of the idea
where the unMonastery comes from -
0:28 - 0:30unMonastery is a pilot project,
-
0:30 - 0:34and, as all prototypes,
needs to be evaluated -
0:34 - 0:38so it's good to take a break at some point
-
0:38 - 0:40and run an important event,
the one on July 22nd -
0:40 - 0:44That is not going to be a closing event
of the unMonastery -
0:44 - 0:49but a time to build
what future scenarios might look like. -
0:49 - 0:52How do I feel about
the unMonastery staying in Matera? -
0:52 - 0:55Oh, I would love
for the unMonastery to stay in Matera, -
0:55 - 0:58I think it's a wonderful place.
-
0:58 - 1:00What I imagine for the unMonastery is
-
1:00 - 1:02I think it's going to spread, at least in Europe
-
1:02 - 1:06Just as Matera could be a hub
-
1:06 - 1:09for all these different
social innovation projects, -
1:09 - 1:13and technological innovation projects.
-
1:13 - 1:21it could be a hub for unMonastery
to nurture its own growth. -
1:21 - 1:24When people from a local community
meet people from the outside world, -
1:24 - 1:27Their encounter enables seeing
that local place through new eyes. -
1:27 - 1:30So, the idea of the unMonastery
as a local development policy is this: -
1:30 - 1:34you reach out to people in Sweden,
UK, USA, Poland and so on, -
1:34 - 1:36You bring them here,
and they are going to say: -
1:36 - 1:38"Neat! Here we can do this thing.
-
1:38 - 1:41Or That other thing might be
interpreted in this way." -
1:41 - 1:42Local people will say
-
1:42 - 1:43"I don't know, you might be right ...
or you might be wrong", -
1:43 - 1:47so they discuss, they argue,
they work together, try stuff out, -
1:47 - 1:53and with a bit of luck,
a few real innovations will emerge -
1:53 - 1:57We ran a first workshop
to test [CoderDojo], -
1:57 - 2:06here at the unMonastery,
in late May, with 15 children. -
2:06 - 2:07It worked really well,
-
2:07 - 2:13so we decided
to run a second one -
2:13 - 2:21There is a school here in Matera,
called Pascoli -
2:21 - 2:26Headmaster and teachers
are very active -
2:26 - 2:29they want to change things
-
2:29 - 2:35So, together, we decided to organize
a day for the childern of Matera. -
2:35 - 2:42It happened in late June,
with 60 children. -
2:42 - 2:48It worked really, really well.
-
2:48 - 2:54The last 2 months have been
significantly different from the first 4 -
2:54 - 2:59And we were able to continue
to develop our projects -
2:59 - 3:01And think more about how we approach them,
-
3:01 - 3:04And how we might be able to improve them
in the future -
3:04 - 3:08And it also gave us an opportunity
to invite new people, -
3:08 - 3:10with different projects and ideas,
-
3:10 - 3:13to also be here with us in Matera,
-
3:13 - 3:15and develop their own projects
-
3:15 - 3:19as well as collaborating with us.
-
3:19 - 3:23What our unMonasterian friends gave us
when they came here -
3:23 - 3:27is some of their time
to build some of their own space -
3:27 - 3:29And to bring us new ideas,
and share them with us. -
3:29 - 3:33They've given us the gift of their ideas.
-
3:33 - 3:37No doubt, a very important experience
for Comitato [Matera 2019], -
3:37 - 3:39very meaningful
-
3:39 - 3:43But it needs to be shared,
and analysed -
3:43 - 3:46and we need to figure out
how to take it further -
3:46 - 3:50Because the unMonastery will be
one of our flagship projects, -
3:50 - 3:53So we are committed to keep working
-
3:53 - 3:56along this path of social innovation
-
3:56 - 4:00Following the unMonastery model and others
-
4:04 - 4:09I think the process has already started,
and it is irreversible. -
4:09 - 4:13It is like a clockwork set in motion,
-
4:13 - 4:16And it is not something that will
change the city ... -
4:16 - 4:20it is something that has already
changed the city. -
4:20 - 4:22When we talk about impact,
-
4:22 - 4:28Are we talking about the impact in 1 year,
or the impact over 200 years?
