We thought it would be interesting
to start a network of spaces

And to draw on existing models that
seem to be working, like hackerspaces

but also by borrowing in some ways
from the communes

and thinking about why they failed.

And that's kind of the idea
where the unMonastery comes from

unMonastery is a pilot project,

and, as all prototypes,
needs to be evaluated

so it's good to take a break at some point

and run an important event,
the one on July 22nd

That is not going to be a closing event
of the unMonastery

but a time to build
what future scenarios might look like.

How do I feel about
the unMonastery staying in Matera?

Oh, I would love
for the unMonastery to stay in Matera,

I think it's a wonderful place.

What I imagine for the unMonastery is

I think it's going to spread, at least in Europe

Just as Matera could be a hub

for all these different
social innovation projects,

and technological innovation projects.

it could be a hub for unMonastery
to nurture its own growth.

When people from a local community
meet people from the outside world,

Their encounter enables seeing
that local place through new eyes.

So, the idea of the unMonastery
as a local development policy is this:

you reach out to people in Sweden,
UK, USA, Poland and so on,

You bring them here,
and they are going to say:

"Neat! Here we can do this thing.

Or That other thing might be
interpreted in this way."

Local people will say

"I don't know, you might be right ...
or you might be wrong",

so they discuss, they argue,
they work together, try stuff out,

and with a bit of luck,
a few real innovations will emerge

We ran a first workshop
to test [CoderDojo],

here at the unMonastery,
in late May, with 15 children.

It worked really well,

so we decided
to run a second one

There is a school here in Matera,
called Pascoli

Headmaster and teachers
are very active

they want to change things

So, together, we decided to organize
a day for the childern of Matera.

It happened in late June,
with 60 children.

It worked really, really well.

The last 2 months have been
significantly different from the first 4

And we were able to continue
to develop our projects

And think more about how we approach them,

And how we might be able to improve them
in the future

And it also gave us an opportunity
to invite new people,

with different projects and ideas,

to also be here with us in Matera,

and develop their own projects

as well as collaborating with us.

What our unMonasterian friends gave us
when they came here

is some of their time
to build some of their own space

And to bring us new ideas,
and share them with us.

They've given us the gift of their ideas.

No doubt, a very important experience
for Comitato [Matera 2019],

very meaningful

But it needs to be shared,
and analysed

and we need to figure out
how to take it further

Because the unMonastery will be
one of our flagship projects,

So we are committed to keep working

along this path of social innovation

Following the unMonastery model and others

I think the process has already started,
and it is irreversible.

It is like a clockwork set in motion,

And it is not something that will
change the city ...

it is something that has already
changed the city.

When we talk about impact,

Are we talking about the impact in 1 year,
or the impact over 200 years?
