0:20 - 0:21How do media organizations

0:22 - 0:22overcome that?

0:23 - 0:24Well, we have the challenge
-
0:25 - 0:27that people now trust
-
0:27 - 0:28their peers more than they
-
0:29 - 0:30trust established media
-
0:30 - 0:32institutions and that
-
0:32 - 0:33more and more people,
-
0:34 - 0:35over half the people,
-
0:36 - 0:37get their news from social
-
0:37 - 0:37media.
-
0:39 - 0:40But also it's very important to
-
0:40 - 0:41remember that fake news is not
-
0:42 - 0:43a new phenomenon.
-
0:44 - 0:46Let me take you back to
-
0:47 - 0:49the year before the invasion
-
0:50 - 0:50of Iraq.
-
0:52 - 0:53The fake news
-
0:53 - 0:54then was on the front page
-
0:54 - 0:55of The New York Times,
-
0:56 - 0:57in stories by Judith Miller,
-
0:58 - 0:59about their weapons of mass
-
1:00 - 1:01destruction programs in Iraq.
-
1:02 - 1:04All of them entirely fake.
-
1:05 - 1:06And then they were amplified
-
1:07 - 1:09on the morning Sunday shows
-
1:09 - 1:10and by administration
-
1:11 - 1:11officials.
-
1:12 - 1:13But at the time they were
-
1:13 - 1:14reporting
-
1:15 - 1:16on what they were being told by
-
1:17 - 1:17the administration.
-
1:18 - 1:19But that's fake news because
-
1:19 - 1:20the reporting- becoming a
-
1:21 - 1:22mouthpiece for the
-
1:22 - 1:24administration is promoting
-
1:24 - 1:25fake news. And look at what it
-
1:26 - 1:28led to. It led to the
-
1:29 - 1:31most tragic foreign policy
-
1:31 - 1:32mistake of the Western world in
-
1:33 - 1:33our lifetime,
-
1:34 - 1:35because a lot of the
-
1:35 - 1:36consequences that follow that
-
1:37 - 1:38we reading about every day in
-
1:38 - 1:40the papers now including ISIS,
-
1:42 - 1:43were the result of that
-
1:44 - 1:46incredible destabilization
-
1:46 - 1:47of the region because of
-
1:48 - 1:49the invasion of Iraq
-
1:50 - 1:51based on entirely fake
-
1:52 - 1:53news, we should never forget
-
1:54 - 1:54that.
-
1:55 - 1:56So we've talked about that
-
1:56 - 1:57relationship with fake news and
-
1:57 - 1:58the administration that that
-
1:59 - 1:59you're saying,
-
2:00 - 2:01Arianna, bu what about the
-
2:01 - 2:02administration now in the U.S.
-
2:03 - 2:03with President Trump?
-
2:04 - 2:05Because there's the
-
2:06 - 2:07fake news, or is there, the
-
2:07 - 2:08dossier that's being talked
-
2:09 - 2:10about, the relationship that
-
2:10 - 2:12he's having now with media
-
2:12 - 2:14outlets. It's unprecedented.

2:14 - 2:15He's accusing networks
-
2:16 - 2:17and it's never happened before.

2:19 - 2:20What do you make of it?

2:21 - 2:21Well two things.

2:21 - 2:22First of all Donald Trump

2:23 - 2:24should be separated from his

2:25 - 2:26phone at night.

2:27 - 2:28Get a full night's sleep and

2:29 - 2:30stop tweeting in the middle of
-
2:30 - 2:30the night.

2:31 - 2:32Yeah, because he's tweeting at
-
2:33 - 2:333 a.m.

2:34 - 2:36Exactly. He's the poster child
-
2:36 - 2:37of sleep deprivation.
-
2:38 - 2:38He's exhausted.
-
2:38 - 2:39How do you think it's affecting
-
2:40 - 2:40him?
-
2:40 - 2:41It's definitely- you can see
-
2:41 - 2:42it's affecting him!
-
2:43 - 2:43In what way?
-
2:43 - 2:45It's affecting him in the sense

2:45 - 2:45that,

2:46 - 2:47even after he won,

2:48 - 2:50he was basically taking

2:51 - 2:52the bait constantly.

2:53 - 2:54You would have thought after

2:54 - 2:56your win you can just relax,
-
2:56 - 2:57you're on top of the world,
-
2:57 - 2:58you're going to be President of
-
2:59 - 3:01the United States in a few
-
3:01 - 3:01days.
-
3:02 - 3:04And it's really
-
3:04 - 3:06the opposite of my
-
3:06 - 3:07greatest hero,
-
3:09 - 3:11Marcus Aurelius who was Emperor
-
3:11 - 3:12of Rome and a stoic
-
3:12 - 3:12philosopher.

3:13 - 3:14And really these are like two
-
3:15 - 3:15examples,

3:16 - 3:17polar opposites,
-
3:17 - 3:17of leadership.

3:18 - 3:21One is kind of unflappable

3:21 - 3:23in the presence of any dangers,

3:24 - 3:25accusations and leading
-
3:26 - 3:27from a very centered,
-
3:28 - 3:29responsible place and
-
3:30 - 3:31the other, unfortunately,
-
3:31 - 3:33is being affected by every
-
3:34 - 3:35negative tweet and
-
3:36 - 3:38portrayal on Saturday Night
-
3:38 - 3:39Live that he doesn't like
-
3:40 - 3:41and every thing
-
3:42 - 3:43kind of makes him upset.
-
3:44 - 3:45And I promise you, if he got
-
3:45 - 3:45eight hours sleep
-
3:47 - 3:48and did not
-
3:49 - 3:50to eat in the middle of the

3:50 - 3:52night, the next
-
3:52 - 3:52four years it would be

3:53 - 3:54infinitely better for the

3:54 - 3:55world. So I highly recommend

4:03 - 4:05tweets that he directed

4:05 - 4:06at you personally,

4:07 - 4:08back in 2012,

4:09 - 4:10and they were very harsh.

4:11 - 4:12They- they were real personal

4:12 - 4:13attacks on you.

4:13 - 4:14But that's his style.

4:15 - 4:16You know, that doesn't mean
-
4:16 - 4:17anything. You know, he always
-
4:17 - 4:18attacks people.
-
4:19 - 4:21I think- right now I think
-
4:21 - 4:23he has an opportunity to tap
-
4:23 - 4:24into the best Donald Trump
-
4:24 - 4:24there is.
-
4:25 - 4:26Because I think we all have the
-
4:27 - 4:28better angels of our nature and
-
4:29 - 4:30the worst part of ourselves,
-
4:31 - 4:32and we all have an interest for
-
4:32 - 4:33him to tap into that part
-
4:34 - 4:35because he is now the
-
4:35 - 4:35president.
-
4:36 - 4:38And I think it's incredibly
-
4:39 - 4:40important for people,
-
4:41 - 4:41good people,
-
4:42 - 4:43to accept to be in his
-
4:43 - 4:44administration. I'm a believer
-
4:45 - 4:47in that because the more he
-
4:46 - 4:47is surrounded by people who can
-
4:49 - 4:50influence him in the right
-
4:50 - 4:50direction,
-
4:51 - 4:52the better off the world will
-
4:53 - 4:54be. He- and
-
