Kerry James Marshall: Ser un Artista | Art21 "Exclusivo"

Episode #018: Kerry James Marshall discusses three recent paintings, all Untitled (2008), during the installation of his exhibition Black Romantic at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York.

Kerry James Marshall's work is based on a broad range of art-historical references, from Renaissance painting to folk art. A striking aspect of his paintings is the emphatically black skin tone of his figures, a development the artist says emerged from an investigation into the invisibility of blacks in America and the unnecessarily negative connotations associated with darkness.

Quiero decir que si vuelves a leer el ensayo de Langston Hughes de 1929,

Pienso que era, "El Artista Negro y la Montaña Racial".

El abre con una pregunta de un joven poeta que se le acerca y le dice:

"Yo no quiero ser un poeta negro, yo sólo quiero ser un poeta". Pero que significa eso, realmente.

En su ensayo, el dice, que lo que el artistica realmente está diciendo es "Yo quiero ser un artista blanco".

Porque no están quemados por el problema de la raza.

No ser llamado un artistica negro parece realizar algún tipo de

función liberadora en las mentes de muchas personas.

Entonces, ¿quién tiene que no saber, o quién tiene que no pensar en usted como un artista negro

para que usted se convierta en un artista real?

La pintura es la pintura. Y pintores negros han hecho todo tipo de trabajo todo el tiempo,

Así que no es una cuestión de si representan o si no representan.

Pero es el tratamiento de cualquiera de las formas en que ellos participan.

Eso es lo que determina el valor de la obra. No si usted los llama artistas negros o no.
