Uncountable English Nouns | Fix Common Grammar Mistakes & Errors
-
0:10 - 0:14Hello I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!
-
0:14 - 0:21In this lesson we're focusing on English nouns. Why?
-
0:21 - 0:25Because so many of the mistakes that you're making in English
-
0:25 - 0:28are related to the way that you use nouns.
-
0:28 - 0:33Starting from the top, there are two types of English noun
-
0:33 - 0:37countable and uncountable English nouns.
-
0:37 - 0:39Now, you might be thinking
-
0:39 - 0:43"yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah... Whatever it doesn't really matter!"
-
0:43 - 0:46But actually, it does matter.
-
0:46 - 0:49It really really does, for a whole lot of reasons!
-
0:50 - 0:53Like, how to use articles correctly.
-
0:53 - 0:58How to use 'much' and 'many', 'so' and 'such',
-
0:58 - 1:02'some' and 'any' or 'a little' and 'a few'.
-
1:03 - 1:06These words all depend on the type of noun
-
1:07 - 1:12and learning and understanding more about countable and uncountable nouns
-
1:12 - 1:14and how they're used differently
-
1:14 - 1:18will dramatically improve your English grammar!
-
1:19 - 1:23I guarantee you that some of the mistakes that you're making in English
-
1:23 - 1:28are because you are treating an uncountable noun like a countable noun,
-
1:28 - 1:31or a countable noun like an uncountable noun!
-
1:32 - 1:36Now, I've made a 'cheat sheet' to help you understand these rules
-
1:37 - 1:41and I'm going to tell you how to
download it at the end of this lesson. -
1:41 - 1:45In this video we're focusing on
uncountable nouns -
1:45 - 1:50but you can check out another video on countable nouns right
there. -
1:50 - 1:53Okay! So, the kitchen is a great place
-
1:53 - 1:57to start talking about countable
and uncountable nouns. -
1:58 - 2:01It's been a while since mmmEnglish has been in the kitchen,
-
2:02 - 2:05so I'm very excited to be back here!
-
2:11 - 2:14The easiest way to remember uncountable nouns
-
2:14 - 2:18is to think about nouns that are difficult to count.
-
2:19 - 2:25Things like liquids, water, or wine.
-
2:25 - 2:27Gases the air,
-
2:28 - 2:31or powders like flour.
-
2:31 - 2:37Or things like electricity, money or abstract nouns like
-
2:38 - 2:42happiness, motivation and luck.
-
2:42 - 2:46Now, all of these nouns, if you think about it, are difficult to count.
-
2:47 - 2:50Uncountable nouns have only one form.
-
2:51 - 2:52They can't be plural.
-
2:52 - 2:56You can't use 'a' or 'an' with uncountable nouns
-
2:57 - 2:59because they can't be counted.
-
3:00 - 3:03You can't use numbers with them at all.
-
3:04 - 3:09We can't say "I need a milk" or "give me 3
monies". -
3:09 - 3:12But you can use some with uncountable nouns
-
3:12 - 3:16and that just means 'an amount', but not a specific amount.
-
3:17 - 3:20"Can you get some rice from the supermarket for me?"
-
3:21 - 3:25We can also use uncountable nouns without 'some'.
-
3:26 - 3:30"Can you get rice from the
supermarket for me?" -
3:30 - 3:32(That's) perfectly okay as well!
-
3:32 - 3:36For example, to make pancakes I need
to make, I need to have some flour. -
3:37 - 3:40I need to have some sugar, some water
-
3:41 - 3:43and maybe even some maple syrup.
-
3:44 - 3:47All of these nouns are uncountable
-
3:47 - 3:51but we do need a way to quantify these nouns,
-
3:51 - 3:53especially when you're cooking in the kitchen.
-
3:54 - 3:57We need to know how much to use!
-
3:57 - 4:01And that's easy to do when you're talking about countable nouns,
-
4:01 - 4:04like 'a lemon' or 'an apple'
-
4:05 - 4:07but with uncountable nouns
-
4:08 - 4:12you need another countable noun to help you quantify
-
4:12 - 4:14your uncountable noun.
-
4:14 - 4:17A packet of rice,
-
4:17 - 4:22a cup of oil,
-
4:23 - 4:28a can of coconut milk,
-
4:28 - 4:322 litres of water, for example.
-
4:32 - 4:37And all of a sudden, all of these things can become countable!
-
4:38 - 4:43Notice how I was using an article with all of those nouns?
-
4:43 - 4:47Now, this is all great in the
kitchen but what about outside of the kitchen, -
4:48 - 4:56with nouns like information or
happiness or money, luggage, advice! -
4:56 - 5:01It's the same idea! A piece of information,
-
5:02 - 5:04a moment of happiness,
-
5:04 - 5:08a bit of luck or a bit of money,
-
5:09 - 5:12two pieces of luggage or
-
5:12 - 5:15I've got three pieces of advice for you!
-
5:16 - 5:20Let's recap on uncountable nouns for a
moment. -
5:20 - 5:21They have only one form.
-
5:22 - 5:24They're never plural.
-
5:24 - 5:27You can't use
articles like 'a' or 'an' with them -
5:28 - 5:30and can't use numbers.
-
5:31 - 5:36You can't say 'an information' or 'two luggages'
-
5:36 - 5:38or 'three advices'.
-
5:39 - 5:42Okay? Fabulous!
-
5:42 - 5:45Don't forget that you can download this worksheet
-
5:46 - 5:50to help you practice using uncountable nouns correctly.
-
5:51 - 5:55Now, there are some uncountable nouns that you'll
-
5:55 - 5:57see being used as plural nouns.
-
5:58 - 5:59Eeeek!
-
6:01 - 6:03But before you freak out,
-
6:03 - 6:06these exceptions are related to the context
-
6:06 - 6:10and just for a moment this is going to get a little bit confusing.
-
6:11 - 6:13But be patient, stay calm!
-
6:13 - 6:16I'm going to help you to understand right now!
-
6:17 - 6:20Let's use coffee as an example!
-
6:20 - 6:23I've got some instant coffee here,
-
6:23 - 6:26some coffee beans and of
course, -
6:26 - 6:28a delicious cup of coffee.
-
6:29 - 6:32Now, the liquid is uncountable
-
6:32 - 6:36and so is the powder that's in instant coffee.
-
6:37 - 6:42Now, you can count the
beans but that's less common. -
6:43 - 6:46So, we need some other countable nouns
-
6:46 - 6:50to tell us some more information about the noun.
-
6:50 - 6:56A jar, a packet or a kilogram a cup.
-
6:57 - 7:00But you might hear someone say
-
7:00 - 7:03"I'll have a coffee with two sugars please."
-
7:04 - 7:05Huh?
-
7:05 - 7:08Coffee and sugar are both uncountable!
-
7:09 - 7:11How can that be?
-
7:11 - 7:15Well simply, the context will
tell us that -
7:15 - 7:18it means a cup of coffee
-
7:19 - 7:23and two teaspoons of sugar.
-
7:23 - 7:26The same if someone said "We'll take three waters."
-
7:27 - 7:31It means three bottles of water or three
glasses of water. -
7:31 - 7:36So, how do you know if a noun is countable or uncountable?
-
7:36 - 7:37It's easy!
-
7:38 - 7:40In the dictionary when you look up this word
-
7:41 - 7:45you'll see [U] or a [C] next to that noun.
-
7:46 - 7:49It will tell you if it's countable or uncountable
-
7:49 - 7:54and instantly, you'll know how you can use this noun,
-
7:55 - 7:59especially once you download the
worksheet that's going to help you. -
7:59 - 8:03It's really important because remember
there's lots of different words -
8:03 - 8:05that you can use in English
-
8:05 - 8:10with uncountable nouns that you can't use with countable nouns.
-
8:10 - 8:13There's a little water in my cup.
-
8:14 - 8:17There's a few waters in my cup.
-
8:18 - 8:21There's too much information.
-
8:22 - 8:25There's too many informations.
-
8:27 - 8:30So, it's really important that you're using the correct
-
8:30 - 8:32English word with these nouns.
-
8:33 - 8:34Now, before I finish
-
8:34 - 8:36I want to tell you some of the
biggest mistakes -
8:37 - 8:41that I see with uncountable nouns in English.
-
8:42 - 8:45Advice, knowledge,
-
8:45 - 8:50information, news,
-
8:50 - 8:54luggage, equipment
-
8:54 - 8:56and furniture
-
8:59 - 9:02These are all uncountable nouns.
-
9:02 - 9:04They have only one form.
-
9:05 - 9:06So, that's it for this lesson!
-
9:06 - 9:08I hope that you're feeling a little more confident
-
9:09 - 9:11with uncountable nouns now.

There are two types of nouns - countable and uncountable. Knowing the difference between them and how you can use these types of nouns is really important. It affects how you use:

I've made a worksheet that you can download so you can practice what you learn in this lesson. This video, we’ll focus on uncountable nouns. You can check out my lesson on countable nouns right here: https://youtu.be/XWkRGtCd3eY
What you need to know about uncountable nouns:
Uncountable nouns are difficult to count! All of these nouns are uncountable:
- Liquids (water, milk, wine)
- Powders (flour, coffee, sugar)
- gases (air)
- electricity, money, music...
- abstract nouns (like happiness, motivation and luck)Uncountable nouns have only one form - they cannot be plural.
You can’t use 'a' or 'an' with uncountable nouns because they are used with singular nouns (one) - and uncountable nouns can’t be counted!
You can’t use numbers with uncountable nouns! You can use ‘some’ with uncountable nouns - because we use it to say there is an amount, but not a specific amount.
But you can also use uncountable nouns WITHOUT ‘some’: Can you get rice from the supermarket? When it’s not important to say how much!
