It all started in a small upper room, -
0:35 - 0:38with humble, fervent prayer.

0:40 - 0:42Threatened by the authorities

0:42 - 0:43and banned from preaching,
-
0:43 - 0:47the church prayed and two
men witnessed -
0:47 - 0:49with great power and grace.

0:54 - 0:57And people prayed everywhere,
in one accord -
0:57 - 1:00in repentance, with confession
and humility. -
1:00 - 1:03And the lives of people were changed.

1:07 - 1:10Two men started out
on a missionary journey -
1:10 - 1:14that would turn the world
as they knew it upside down. -
1:14 - 1:17♪ choral music ♪

1:17 - 1:21And the message went out
to the world beyond. -
1:21 - 1:24♪ choral music ♪
-
1:24 - 1:28Corporate prayer helped a prisoner escape.
-
1:28 - 1:31♪ choral music ♪
-
1:31 - 1:35A king requested
that his people fast and pray -
1:35 - 1:37and the enemy was defeated.
-
1:37 - 1:40A battle won without the need to fight.
-
1:41 - 1:46♪ choral music ♪
-
1:46 - 1:50Through a faithful servant
and a young queen's faith and courage, -
1:50 - 1:53a people were saved.
-
1:53 - 1:58Stories in the Bible showing
the power of united prayer. -
1:59 - 2:00As I read the book of Acts,
-
2:00 - 2:04it's really a book about believers
coming together to pray, -
2:04 - 2:07and a prayer-answering God.
-
2:07 - 2:09Personal prayer is important.
-
2:09 - 2:12Secret prayer is the life of the soul.
-
2:12 - 2:17But we know that there has never been
a revival anywhere on this planet -
2:17 - 2:21that wasn't preceded by united and
continuous prayer. -
2:21 - 2:25Our Lord on one occasion says where
two or more of you agree -
2:25 - 2:29on touching anything that is according
to My will, it will be done. -
2:29 - 2:32So there is a synergy that happens
-
2:32 - 2:37when we hook up together and unite
our voices in crying out to God. -
2:37 - 2:40As the spirit of prophecy tells us,
-
2:40 - 2:45prayer is the key that unlocks
the storehouse of heaven's treasury -
2:45 - 2:46and blessings.
-
2:46 - 2:48Some of Ellen White's
counsel and statements -
2:48 - 2:50on united prayer are powerful as well.
-
2:50 - 2:53She says in one place that -
-
2:53 - 2:56when she was writing to the Farnsworths,
I believe it was - she said -
2:56 - 2:58there's more power in united prayer
-
2:58 - 2:59than even in private prayer.
-
2:59 - 3:01Then she says, "Why is that?"
-
3:01 - 3:03It's because the unity of heart
of the believers. -
3:03 - 3:05It's like God gets really excited
-
3:05 - 3:06when we're really of one accord
-
3:06 - 3:09when we unite together,
just like they did in Acts. -
3:09 - 3:11Another statement she says,
-
3:11 - 3:14at the sound of fervent prayer,
Satan's whole host trembles. -
3:14 - 3:18Jesus knows that the habit
of praying with others -
3:18 - 3:23helps to rid our lives of the
self-centeredness of our prayers -
3:23 - 3:25when we pray by ourselves.
-
3:25 - 3:29So when the Bible talks about
"continue earnestly in prayer," -
3:29 - 3:32that's not just an individual activity.
-
3:32 - 3:37It's a call to the church as a community
to call out to God. -
3:37 - 3:39Not to change God's mind,
-
3:39 - 3:42but that we come into alignment
with God's will -
3:42 - 3:47and actually I think he uses us as part
of the answer to those prayers. -
3:47 - 3:50As you look at the book of Acts,
-
3:50 - 3:54united prayer brought God's people together.
-
3:54 - 3:56In Acts chapter 1 and verse 14 and 15,
-
3:56 - 3:59the entire church met together and prayed.
-
3:59 - 4:02They knew that the task before
them was too great. -
4:02 - 4:04They knew the challenge was too immense.
-
4:04 - 4:07They knew there was no way they could
carry the gospel to the world. -
4:07 - 4:11But yet as they prayed,
God did something miraculous. -
4:11 - 4:13He poured out His Holy Spirit
on the day of Pentecost -
4:13 - 4:16and three thousand were baptized.
-
4:16 - 4:19You know one of the —
when you read the text there — -
4:19 - 4:23one of the things that jumps out at me is
the simple English phrase, -
4:23 - 4:26"they were in one accord."
-
4:26 - 4:29Pentecost was just an extraordinary event.
-
4:29 - 4:35It came after the culmination
of Christ's ministry on this earth. -
4:35 - 4:42And it looked as though everything was
completely dashed and destroyed. -
4:42 - 4:44When Christ was hanging on that cross
-
4:44 - 4:46and then of course
the resurrection took place. -
4:46 - 4:48And He appeared to His disciples
-
4:48 - 4:51which gave them a completely
different perspective -
4:51 - 4:54on what their ministry was all about.
-
4:54 - 4:57Our blessed Lord told His disciples
-
4:57 - 5:01to tarry in Jerusalem, united in prayer.
-
5:01 - 5:04And that was one of the prerequisites
-
5:04 - 5:06for bringing that rushing mighty wind
-
5:06 - 5:09and the presence of the Holy Spirit
on the day of Pentecost. -
5:09 - 5:11[man speaking berber]

5:11 - 5:13It was the time of Passover
-
5:13 - 5:16and we were in an upper
room in Jerusalem. -
5:16 - 5:18We were all praying in one accord.
-
5:18 - 5:21We were praying for repentance
and humility, -
5:21 - 5:24and we were confessing our sins.
-
5:24 - 5:28We were also seeking the Lord's vision,
power and the Holy Spirit. -
5:28 - 5:30There was an incredible feeling of oneness
-
5:30 - 5:32as we prayed earnestly together.
-
5:32 - 5:36[man praying in Berber]

5:36 - 5:39[woman speaking in Berber]
-
5:39 - 5:42[female speaker] Suddenly there
was the sound of a violent wind -
5:42 - 5:44that filled the whole room
where we were sitting. -
5:44 - 5:47[wind sounds]
-
5:47 - 5:49Then tongues of fire came down
-
5:49 - 5:51and this fire rested on the people.
-
5:53 - 5:55[man speaking Berber]
-
5:55 - 5:58[male narrator] All the people in the
room were filled with the Holy Spirit. -
5:58 - 6:01Now remember that at
the time of the Passover, -
6:01 - 6:03people came from many countries to worship
-
6:03 - 6:06and now suddenly they
could hear the gospel -
6:06 - 6:08each in their own language.
-
6:08 - 6:10As a result of this, three thousand people
-
6:10 - 6:13were added to the believers in one day.
-
6:13 - 6:17♪ gently sparkling music ♪

6:17 - 6:18[woman speaking Berber]
-
6:18 - 6:21[female speaker] The people
devoted themselves -
6:21 - 6:23to the apostles' teaching
and the fellowship, -
6:23 - 6:25to the breaking of bread and of prayer.
-
6:25 - 6:28Every day they would meet together
in the temple courts. -
6:28 - 6:31In their homes, they broke
bread and ate together. -
6:31 - 6:34And the number of those
being saved grew daily. -
6:34 - 6:37♪ one rich chord music ♪

6:37 - 6:38And we believe something like this
-
6:38 - 6:41is going to happen
in the last days as well. -
6:41 - 6:44But I think only as a church
and as a people -
6:44 - 6:46we get together in one accord
-
6:46 - 6:48and in fervent prayer, will we ...
-
6:48 - 6:51till we do that, we won't see that happen.
-
6:51 - 6:54And really, what happened at Pentecost
-
6:54 - 6:58is going to be, again, duplicated
by the Lord -
6:58 - 7:00in an even greater fashion
-
7:00 - 7:02as the three angels' messages go forward,
-
7:02 - 7:06as the fourth angel of Revelation 18
is proclaimed -
7:06 - 7:10and as the final loud cry is heralded
all over the world. -
7:10 - 7:14And it's going to be people
who have submitted to the Lord, -
7:14 - 7:16confessed their sins,
-
7:16 - 7:18and then the Holy Spirit can fall
-
7:18 - 7:20and can use us in a mighty way.
-
7:20 - 7:23Well, I think in the book
of Acts, Acts chapter 6, -
7:23 - 7:24it seemed like a good problem.
-
7:24 - 7:27The church was growing exponentially.
-
7:27 - 7:31But in the midst of that, there's this
food distribution challenge. -
7:31 - 7:36[men arguing in Berber]

7:37 - 7:41[male speaker] The church
was undergoing practical challenges. -
7:41 - 7:44The Hellenistic Jews were complaining
against the Hebraic Jews -
7:44 - 7:47because the former's widows
were being overlooked -
7:47 - 7:49in the daily distribution of food.
-
7:49 - 7:51The apostles decided that they needed
-
7:51 - 7:55to focus on the ministry
of prayer and the word. -
7:55 - 7:57And so they requested for seven deacons
-
7:57 - 8:01to be chosen for these
other practical tasks. -
8:01 - 8:04♪ animating music ♪

8:04 - 8:06[man speaking Berber]

8:06 - 8:10[male speaker] The apostles
asked us as a group -
8:10 - 8:12to chose seven men who were known
-
8:12 - 8:16to be full of the Spirit and have wisdom.
-
8:16 - 8:18This proposal from the apostles
-
8:18 - 8:20pleased our whole group.
-
8:20 - 8:23So we went about selecting the seven men.
-
8:23 - 8:25Once the men were selected,
-
8:25 - 8:28they were presented to the apostles.
-
8:28 - 8:32The apostles laid their hands on them
and prayed for them. -
8:32 - 8:36[2nd speaker] With prayer as a priority,
the church would never fail. -
8:36 - 8:39After this, the number of disciples
increased rapidly. -
8:39 - 8:44And a large number of priests
became obedient to the work. -
8:44 - 8:46So I think we find a case study there
-
8:46 - 8:49that says when we face challenges,
-
8:49 - 8:52let's use wisdom, let's use our training
-
8:52 - 8:54but let's also recognize that we have
-
8:54 - 8:57a prayer-answering God
who will give us wisdom. -
8:57 - 8:59I've seen this over and over and over.
-
8:59 - 9:01Churches with big problems
-
9:01 - 9:05have solved them when they
come together to pray. -
9:05 - 9:07♪ baritone choral music ♪

9:07 - 9:12[Chief priest lecturing Peter and John]
-
9:12 - 9:17[Chief priest continuing
to lecture Peter and John] -
9:17 - 9:20[male narrator]
Peter and John were called in -
9:20 - 9:22by the chief priests and elders
about their preaching. -
9:22 - 9:24They tried to defend their actions,
-
9:24 - 9:26but the leaders were very hard on them.
-
9:26 - 9:27They were commanded not to speak
-
9:27 - 9:29or teach in the name of Jesus.
-
9:29 - 9:33After further threats, they let them go.
-
9:33 - 9:35Peter and John went back to their
own people -
9:35 - 9:38and reported all that the chief priests
and elders had said. -
9:38 - 9:41♪ baritone choral music ♪

9:41 - 9:43[man speaking Berber]

9:43 - 9:47When we heard all this, we immediately
raised our voices in prayer to God. -
9:47 - 9:51The entire group prayed for
Peter and John. -
9:51 - 9:56We prayed for God to give boldness
to these two humble servants. -
9:56 - 10:00Such intense prayer I had not
experienced for a long time. -
10:00 - 10:04After we had prayed, suddenly
the whole place was shaken. -
10:04 - 10:06[another man speaking Berber]

10:06 - 10:08People were filled with the Holy Spirit
-
10:08 - 10:09and Peter and John went out
-
10:09 - 10:12and gave witness with
great power and grace. -
10:12 - 10:14They witnessed throughout the land
-
10:14 - 10:16about the resurrection of their Saviour.
-
10:16 - 10:18♪ final chord music ♪

10:18 - 10:21So I think Peter and John
drew great strength, -
10:21 - 10:23both from knowing they were praying
-
10:23 - 10:25but also from the power that's unleashed
-
10:25 - 10:26when people pray for us.
-
10:26 - 10:27There's a peace,
-
10:27 - 10:29there's a power from God
-
10:29 - 10:33that comes into us when that prayer
is being answered by many believers. -
10:33 - 10:34♪ stern music ♪
-
10:34 - 10:39[female narrator] Then Esther
sent this reply to Mordecai: -
10:39 - 10:43"Go and gather all the Jews
who are in Susa together -
10:43 - 10:47and pray and fast for me.
-
10:47 - 10:52Do not eat or drink anything
for three days and nights. -
10:52 - 10:57I and my maidens will fast as you do.
-
10:57 - 11:01After that, I will go to the king
-
11:01 - 11:03even though it is against the law.
-
11:03 - 11:07And if I perish, I perish."
-
11:07 - 11:28♪ continously rising music ♪

11:28 - 11:30♪ martial fanfare ♪

11:30 - 11:32We look back at Esther now
-
11:32 - 11:34and we think what a gutsy girl.
-
11:34 - 11:37You know, what a woman of faith.
-
11:37 - 11:40But she was probably just as terrified
-
11:40 - 11:42as any of us might have been.
-
11:42 - 11:45It was a very desperate situation.
-
11:45 - 11:47You know the old saying,
there's no such thing -
11:47 - 11:49as atheists in foxholes.
-
11:49 - 11:53And I think this was a case where
-
11:53 - 11:56they knew without divine intervention,
-
11:56 - 12:00without divine intervention,
all was going to be lost. -
12:00 - 12:05But she was wise enough
to say to her uncle, Mordecai, -
12:05 - 12:08"I will fast and pray.
-
12:08 - 12:12And I will have my people
here in the palace fast and pray. -
12:12 - 12:15But I want all of God's people
to fast and pray." -
12:15 - 12:17I think we miss out a lot
-
12:17 - 12:19on the unleashing of God's power
-
12:19 - 12:22in this world by not fasting.
-
12:22 - 12:25And it doesn't have to mean you
have to go totally without food -
12:25 - 12:28but some form of giving up something
-
12:28 - 12:30we really love every day
-
12:30 - 12:32and uniting that together with prayer
-
12:32 - 12:35and praying with others,
it does something, -
12:35 - 12:37moves in this great controversy.
-
12:37 - 12:40It's very easy at times to forget
-
12:40 - 12:43just how dependant we are upon God.
-
12:43 - 12:46And as Dwight Nelson likes to remind us—
-
12:46 - 12:48Pray desperate prayers!
-
12:48 - 12:49And Esther was desperate.
-
12:49 - 12:52Pray urgent prayers!
-
12:52 - 12:54And pray prayers of expectancy!
-
12:54 - 12:58And I think her prayers
encompassed all three. -
12:58 - 12:59If you look at the book of Acts,
-
12:59 - 13:02prayer was very uniting.
-
13:02 - 13:05Take, for example, Peter and Cornelius.
-
13:05 - 13:10Cornelius, a Gentile.
Peter, a Jew. -
13:10 - 13:14And Jews and Gentiles would
not possibly come together -
13:14 - 13:17in any kind of intimate talking
-
13:17 - 13:18or visiting in one another's homes
-
13:18 - 13:19or eating together.
-
13:19 - 13:23This was the Holy Spirit breaking
down some walls. -
13:23 - 13:28A Gentile of the Italian band,
Cornelius, was praying. -
13:28 - 13:31It was no accident. He was praying.
-
13:31 - 13:34Peter on the rooftop, praying.
-
13:34 - 13:36And he prayed so long that he fell asleep.
-
13:36 - 13:39Peter has this dream of the sheet
coming down -
13:39 - 13:41with all these various animals in it.
-
13:41 - 13:43And God says, Peter, rise and eat.
-
13:43 - 13:45And Peter says, I've never eaten snakes
-
13:45 - 13:48and crocodiles and rodents.
-
13:48 - 13:50The vision of course was not about
-
13:50 - 13:52clean or unclean foods.
-
13:52 - 13:55The vision was about respect
for other cultures. -
13:55 - 13:57Respect for other people.
-
13:57 - 14:02And God sent visions, epiphanies, to
both of them -
14:02 - 14:04that broke down the walls
-
14:04 - 14:06that divided them.
-
14:06 - 14:09And Peter declared, God has shown me
-
14:09 - 14:12that He is no respecter of persons.
-
14:12 - 14:15As both of them prayed, Jew and Gentile,
-
14:15 - 14:17their prayers ascended to heaven
-
14:17 - 14:19and met at the throne of God.
-
14:19 - 14:27♪ drifting while ascending piano music ♪

14:27 - 14:31[1st speaker] It was around noon
when Peter went up to the roof to pray. -
14:31 - 14:33It was here that Peter had a vision
-
14:33 - 14:37about a large sheet containing
a mix of unclean animals -
14:37 - 14:39representing God's affirmation
-
14:39 - 14:40of the diversity of peoples
-
14:40 - 14:42in the growing church.
-
14:42 - 14:45♪ yearning flute mingled in ♪

14:45 - 14:48[2nd speaker] We had heard
that Peter was staying -
14:48 - 14:50at the house of Simon the tanner,
-
14:50 - 14:54and were instructed by Cornelius,
the centurion, to go out and find him. -
14:54 - 14:56♪ piano and flute continue ♪
-
14:56 - 14:58[1st speaker] While Peter
was still thinking about the vision, -
14:58 - 15:01the Holy Spirit told him to go downstairs
-
15:01 - 15:05because three men were looking for him.
-
15:05 - 15:06[same man speaking Berber]
-
15:06 - 15:08Peter went down and told the men
-
15:08 - 15:12that he was the one they were looking for.
-
15:12 - 15:17♪ piano and flute continue colorfully ♪

15:17 - 15:19[2nd speaker] We then told Peter
-
15:19 - 15:21that Cornelius, the centurion,
-
15:21 - 15:23had been told by an angel
-
15:23 - 15:24that Peter would come
-
15:24 - 15:25and see him at his house.
-
15:25 - 15:27So, unbeknown to Peter,
-
15:27 - 15:31Cornelius was already expecting
his visit to Caesarea. -
15:31 - 15:33[first man speaking again]
-
15:33 - 15:36What happened here was quite unusual.
-
15:36 - 15:39Just the fact that Peter
entered the house— -
15:39 - 15:41remember that it was against the law
-
15:41 - 15:43for a Jew to associate with
-
15:43 - 15:45or visit a Gentile.
-
15:45 - 15:47♪ restrained music ♪
-
15:47 - 15:50[2nd speaker] Cornelius told Peter
how three days earlier -
15:50 - 15:52he had been praying in his house
-
15:52 - 15:54when an angel had appeared before him.
-
15:54 - 15:57[first man speaking Berber again]
-
15:57 - 15:59Peter shared with Cornelius
-
15:59 - 16:01his new understanding that God
-
16:01 - 16:03does not show favoritism
-
16:03 - 16:04and is the Lord of all.
-
16:04 - 16:07This was a real turning point.
-
16:07 - 16:08From this point on,
-
16:08 - 16:12the gospel was also given among
other people groups. -
16:12 - 16:17And it all started out with prayer
and fasting, and a vision. -
16:17 - 16:19Cultures were bridged.
-
16:19 - 16:21Barriers were broken down.
-
16:21 - 16:23Hearts were united.
-
16:23 - 16:26And they became one in Jesus Christ.
-
16:26 - 16:28And the gospel was open to the Gentiles.
-
16:28 - 16:29What does united prayer
-
16:29 - 16:31do for breaking down cultures?
-
16:31 - 16:34When we are kneeling together -
-
16:34 - 16:37different cultures, different backgrounds,
-
16:37 - 16:39different sociological backgrounds,
-
16:39 - 16:42different educational backgrounds,
-
16:42 - 16:43different racial complexions -
-
16:43 - 16:46when we are kneeling together
-
16:46 - 16:49our hearts are united
as one in Jesus Christ. -
16:49 - 16:50I look in Acts chapter 13,
-
16:50 - 16:53where the church in Antioch
-
16:53 - 16:56is sending out Paul and Barnabas.
-
16:56 - 16:58And they lay hands on them.
-
16:58 - 17:00And they pray for the blessing
of the Holy Spirit. -
17:00 - 17:04The laying on of hands was the
setting aside, in Acts 13, -
17:04 - 17:08of Paul and Barnabas for
ministry and mission. -
17:08 - 17:11They were going to launch
their missionary journeys. -
17:11 - 17:15I don't think there's anything
magical about the hands. -
17:15 - 17:16I think it's a symbol.
-
17:16 - 17:19Like water is with baptism
-
17:19 - 17:22or the unleavened bread and the
unfermented grape juice -
17:22 - 17:24are in the communion service.
-
17:24 - 17:26When the church comes unitedly,
-
17:26 - 17:28and lays hands on an individual,
-
17:28 - 17:31they are praying for that individual,
-
17:31 - 17:36setting them aside for a specific task
of witness and ministry. -
17:36 - 17:37[male speaking Berber]

17:37 - 17:39As the prophets and teachers
of the early church -
17:39 - 17:41were fasting and praying,
-
17:41 - 17:43the Holy Spirit called Paul and Barnabas
-
17:43 - 17:46to go on their first mission journey.
-
17:46 - 17:49The church prayed together
before sending them out. -
17:49 - 17:50♪ angelic music ♪

17:50 - 17:52[female speaking Berber]

17:52 - 17:54Hands were laid on them and we
prayed earnestly. -
17:54 - 17:57As a united church,
we prayed for their safety -
17:57 - 17:58and that God would grant them
-
17:58 - 18:01the right words to speak to the multitudes
-
18:01 - 18:03We prayed that our missionaries
would be successful -
18:03 - 18:05in spreading the gospel.
-
18:05 - 18:07♪ soaring music ♪

18:07 - 18:10Paul and Barnabas traveled
to several places. -
18:10 - 18:12In Cyprus, they proclaimed the word of God
-
18:12 - 18:14in the Jewish synagogues.
-
18:14 - 18:17In Pisidian Antioch, almost the whole city
-
18:17 - 18:19gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
-
18:19 - 18:22When the Gentiles heard
their messages, they believed. -
18:22 - 18:25The word of the Lord spread
throughout the entire region -
18:25 - 18:29and the disciples were filled
with joy and the Holy Spirit. -
18:29 - 18:32♪ floating angelic music ♪

18:32 - 18:35Paul and Barnabas appointed
elders in every church -
18:35 - 18:38and prayed with fasting, commending
them to the Lord. -
18:38 - 18:40They gathered the church together
-
18:40 - 18:43and reported all that God
had done through them -
18:43 - 18:46and how He had opened a door
of faith to the Gentiles. -
18:48 - 18:49As a praying community,
-
18:49 - 18:53when we lay hands upon those
that we're praying for, -
18:53 - 18:56it represents the hand of God.
-
18:56 - 18:58Kneeling around that person,
-
18:58 - 19:00setting them aside for that task,
-
19:00 - 19:02we're asking the Holy Spirit to come
-
19:02 - 19:04to empower them, to strengthen them
-
19:04 - 19:07for the task that God has given them
through the church. -
19:07 - 19:10I remember a story where Paul was -
-
19:10 - 19:12he encountered a beautiful woman.
-
19:12 - 19:15Her name was Lydia. And she was praying.
-
19:15 - 19:18And, I don't know, that might have been
beside a river, for all I know, -
19:18 - 19:20it may have been beside a well.
-
19:20 - 19:22Maybe it was in the middle of a market,
-
19:22 - 19:24you know, at their time.
-
19:24 - 19:28Wherever it was, God was
able to reach her heart -
19:28 - 19:31and the Bible tells us that she accepted
-
19:31 - 19:33the message of the gospel
and she was baptized. -
19:33 - 19:36We were a group of women
outside the city gate -
19:36 - 19:39by the river at a place of prayer.
-
19:39 - 19:41Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth,
-
19:41 - 19:43from Thyatira was also there.
-
19:43 - 19:46Two men came along
and started to speak to us, -
19:46 - 19:48and asked to join us in prayer.
-
19:48 - 19:51We later learned that they
were Paul and Silas. -
19:51 - 19:56The Lord opened Lydia's heart
to heed Paul's message. -
19:56 - 19:59She and all the members
of her household were baptized. -
19:59 - 20:04Another day Paul and Silas
were on their way to a place of prayer. -
20:04 - 20:06They were met by a female slave
-
20:06 - 20:09who had a spirit in her
that could predict the future. -
20:09 - 20:12She earned a lot of money
for her owners by fortune-telling. -
20:12 - 20:15She followed us and shouted at us.
-
20:15 - 20:19This was disrupting and so Paul
ordered the spirit out of her. -
20:19 - 20:23When her owners realized that their
chance of making money was gone, -
20:23 - 20:26they dragged Paul and Silas
to the authorities -
20:26 - 20:27and they were put in prison.
-
20:27 - 20:33At around midnight, these two
very positive prisoners -
20:33 - 20:36named Paul and Silas were praying
-
20:36 - 20:38and singing hymns to God.
-
20:38 - 20:40The rest of us were listening to them.
-
20:40 - 20:43Suddenly there was a violent earthquake
-
20:43 - 20:45and the prison shook.
-
20:45 - 20:47All the prison doors flew open
-
20:47 - 20:50and everyone's chains came loose.
-
20:50 - 20:52The jailer woke up, saw all the doors open
-
20:52 - 20:55and drew his sword to kill himself.
-
20:55 - 20:57He thought all the prisoners had escaped.
-
20:57 - 21:00But Paul assured him and shouted
-
21:00 - 21:02that he should not harm himself.
-
21:02 - 21:08The jailer called for lights, rushed in
and lay in front of them, trembling. -
21:08 - 21:11The jailer accepted Jesus Christ,
-
21:11 - 21:15and his whole family was baptized.
-
21:15 - 21:17So prayer can happen anywhere.
-
21:17 - 21:19For Hope Channel, you know
I anchor a program, -
21:19 - 21:21I co-anchor a program
called Let's Pray. -
21:21 - 21:24And so here we are in a television studio
-
21:24 - 21:26with lights and cameras and action
-
21:26 - 21:30and yet we are very much
in the manner of prayer. -
21:30 - 21:33And we have seen God,
-
21:33 - 21:36we have seen amazing answers to prayer,
-
21:36 - 21:39from the studio, so it can
happen anywhere. -
21:39 - 21:40One friend of mine has said
-
21:40 - 21:43we must pray with such specificity
-
21:43 - 21:46that we will know when
God answers our prayers. -
21:46 - 21:50In Acts chapter 12, Peter is in prison.
-
21:50 - 21:53He is scheduled for execution.
-
21:53 - 21:56He's chained between soldiers.
-
21:56 - 21:59Herod has decreed that he will die.
-
21:59 - 22:02As Peter's in prison, the entire church
-
22:02 - 22:04—I like that—
the entire church is praying -
22:04 - 22:06for Peter in prison.
-
22:06 - 22:09Right before that, James was, you know,
-
22:09 - 22:11taken to prison, but was killed.
-
22:11 - 22:13And I think the people got
really concerned -
22:13 - 22:15that they may now lose Peter
-
22:15 - 22:17when he was hauled off to jail.
-
22:17 - 22:20And that caused them to get worried
-
22:20 - 22:23so they got together and
really prayed all night long. -
22:23 - 22:26King Herod had arrested some
that belonged to the church -
22:26 - 22:29and was planning to persecute them.
-
22:29 - 22:31When Herod had James
put to death with a sword, -
22:31 - 22:33and saw how the Jews had approved of this,
-
22:33 - 22:35he seized Peter also.
-
22:35 - 22:37[female reporting in Berber]
-
22:37 - 22:39Peter was guarded by four squads
-
22:39 - 22:41of four soldiers each.
-
22:41 - 22:44We were very concerned for his safety.
-
22:44 - 22:46And the church prayed earnestly for him.
-
22:46 - 22:49[male further reporting in Berber]
-
22:49 - 22:52The night before Herod was going
to bring him to trial, -
22:52 - 22:54Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,
-
22:54 - 22:58bound by chains and sentries
stood guard at the entrance. -
22:58 - 23:00Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared
-
23:00 - 23:02and light shone into his cell.
-
23:02 - 23:05The angel struck Peter on
the side to wake him up -
23:05 - 23:07and the chains fell off his wrists.
-
23:07 - 23:11As he was instructed, Peter followed
the angel out of the prison, -
23:11 - 23:15past all of the guards
to the gate of the city. -
23:15 - 23:17[female further reporting in Berber]

23:17 - 23:19Many people had been praying together
-
23:19 - 23:22in the house of Mary, the mother of John.
-
23:22 - 23:26As the servant in the house,
I heard knocking on the door. -
23:26 - 23:31♪ soothing string music ♪
-
23:31 - 23:33With caution, I went to open the door
-
23:33 - 23:36and to my surprise, there stood Peter.
-
23:36 - 23:40We had just been praying
earnestly for him in prison. -
23:40 - 23:42[male further reporting in Berber]
-
23:42 - 23:45Once again, united prayer had worked
-
23:45 - 23:50and the word of God continued
to spread and flourish. -
23:50 - 23:52No one who was at that
prayer meeting that night -
23:52 - 23:55would ever forget that they have a God
-
23:55 - 23:57answering prayer after that night.
-
23:57 - 23:59Everywhere those people went
-
23:59 - 24:02for the rest of their lives,
they told that story, -
24:02 - 24:04which is part of the reason
we know it today, -
24:04 - 24:07they told that story with great power
-
24:07 - 24:10because it was utterly convincing to them
-
24:10 - 24:12of not only God's willingness to help,
-
24:12 - 24:16but God's ability to do it
on a grand and surprising scale. -
24:16 - 24:20Here were three big, huge nations,
-
24:20 - 24:23converging on his little
dinky kingdom of Judah -
24:23 - 24:26and from a human standpoint,
it was wipeout. -
24:26 - 24:29Jehoshaphat says some very honest things
-
24:29 - 24:30about the ones praying.
-
24:30 - 24:32We don't know what to do.
-
24:32 - 24:33We're weak.
-
24:33 - 24:36We're helpless against this great
number that's come against us. -
24:36 - 24:40But he says some very honest
things about who God is too. -
24:40 - 24:43God, You are capable. You are willing.
-
24:43 - 24:46You are able and we are ready.
-
24:46 - 24:50All of which prepared God's
people for His deliverance. -
24:50 - 24:52But I think when we humble
ourselves in prayer -
24:52 - 24:54we're giving God permission
-
24:54 - 24:57to break through in a supernatural way.
-
24:57 - 25:00And, we're even told in the book,
Christ's Object Lessons, -
25:00 - 25:02that we are to present our prayers
-
25:02 - 25:06with a determination that
will not be denied. -
25:06 - 25:08What a promise!
-
25:08 - 25:25♪ ominous music ♪
-
25:25 - 25:27Many people came and told Jehoshaphat
-
25:27 - 25:31that a vast army was approaching
to wage war against him. -
25:31 - 25:35Alarmed by this news,
Jehoshaphat proclaimed -
25:35 - 25:37a fast for all of Judah.
-
25:37 - 25:40People came from every town in Judah
-
25:40 - 25:42to fast and pray together.
-
25:42 - 25:44We were part of a large group
-
25:44 - 25:49and Jehoshaphat was earnestly
asking God for assistance. -
25:49 - 25:52Then a man called Jahaziel stood up
-
25:52 - 25:55and said that Jehoshaphat
should not be concerned— -
25:55 - 25:58that it was not his battle
but God's battle. -
25:58 - 26:05♪ urgent music ♪
-
26:05 - 26:07[man speaking Berber]
-
26:07 - 26:09It was early in the morning
-
26:09 - 26:11when we set out to the desert of Tekoa.
-
26:11 - 26:15We were seriously concerned
about facing this huge army, -
26:15 - 26:17but we were told to have faith.
-
26:17 - 26:20We had also prayed.
-
26:20 - 26:22♪ tense music ♪
-
26:22 - 26:24When our reconnaissance
platoon came over the hill, -
26:24 - 26:27we only saw dead bodies all around.
-
26:27 - 26:29♪ tense music continued ♪
-
26:29 - 26:31The enemy had apparently turned on
each other. [dark brass] -
26:31 - 26:34Jehoshaphat's prayers
had won them the battle -
26:34 - 26:37without even having to fight.
-
26:37 - 26:38When you look at prayer,
-
26:38 - 26:40in the book of Acts in the Bible,
-
26:40 - 26:42a definite pattern emerges.
-
26:42 - 26:45That pattern is that the disciples,
-
26:45 - 26:48as they begin to share what God
has put on their hearts, -
26:48 - 26:52they are persecuted, sometimes
to the point of death. -
26:52 - 26:55As the persecution begins,
-
26:55 - 26:58they actually gather
the believers together. -
26:58 - 27:02They pray and the Holy Spirit
is poured out. -
27:02 - 27:04Thus causing the word of God
-
27:04 - 27:07to be spread even more boldly.
-
27:07 - 27:09Thus the church of God grows.
-
27:09 - 27:12United prayer is critically important
-
27:12 - 27:15to the church because it is the key
-
27:15 - 27:22to national revival and to the
healing of national challenges. -
27:22 - 27:24Prayer, especially united prayer,
-
27:24 - 27:26is not about leverage,
-
27:26 - 27:28twisting the hand of God with more people
-
27:28 - 27:31praying the same phrase
over and over again. -
27:31 - 27:34It is about God's people together
-
27:34 - 27:36getting aligned with His will.
-
27:36 - 27:39When we pray, I think
it changes our hearts. -
27:39 - 27:42And when we can unite together in prayer,
-
27:42 - 27:45there is a unity that is experienced.
-
27:45 - 27:48And then when we ask, whatever we ask,
-
27:48 - 27:52in the powerful name of Jesus,
things happen. -
27:52 - 27:55Why is united prayer important?
-
27:55 - 27:57Because it opens our hearts
-
27:57 - 28:00to the power of the living God
-
28:00 - 28:02to accompany our witness.
-
28:02 - 28:06It brings you to the foot
of the cross, together. -
28:06 - 28:09United prayer is unleashing God's power
-
28:09 - 28:10in the universe.
-
28:10 - 28:12I believe in the great controversy,
-
28:12 - 28:14He's what we need, not the prayer.
-
28:14 - 28:18In the controversy between good and evil,
-
28:18 - 28:21God does not violate our
freedom of choice. -
28:21 - 28:28But as we pray, God opens up
new avenues of working. -
28:28 - 28:31Isn't God already working for that son
or daughter before we pray? -
28:31 - 28:34Isn't He working for the community
before we pray? -
28:34 - 28:36He is. But he's limited by their choice.
-
28:36 - 28:40But as we pray, just like
in the book of Acts -
28:40 - 28:44as the church prayed, God honours
the choice of the praying one. -
28:44 - 28:49And miracles occur as we pray unitedly.
-
28:49 - 28:53When we get things right on the vertical
-
28:53 - 28:56they will become right on the horizontal.
-
