What is a mindful student?

    [What is a mindful student?]
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Dear Thay, dear Sangha,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    In many of your writings,
you refer to a mindful teacher.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    A man learned
    the practice of mindfulness
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    and one student says
    he wrote no longer,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    "What are you thinking?
    Very bad grade!"
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    Instead he wrote,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    "You do not understand
    and it is my fault."
  • 0:49 - 0:53
And this is a very empowering
    view for students.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
But I wondered, what does it mean
to be a more mindful student?
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    What are the responsibilities
of the student towards the teacher
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    and towards their own work?
  • 1:16 - 1:25
    Mindfulness helps to deal
    with difficulties and problems,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    of course,
  • 1:27 - 1:32
    but mindfulness can bring
a lot of joy and happiness.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
And this part is very important.
  • 1:39 - 1:45
    You learn mindfulness not only
to deal with daily problems, difficulties.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
First of all you learn mindfulness
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    in order to nourish yourself,
    to heal yourself.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
And this can be done right away.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    When you breathe in mindfully,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    mindfulness of breathing.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    If you do it skillfully,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
if you know how to do it,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    you'll find that breathing in
    is very pleasant.
  • 2:15 - 2:25
If you suffer during the in-breath
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    this is not really mindfulness.
  • 2:35 - 2:40
Mindfulness is the energy that helps you
to know what is going on.
  • 2:40 - 2:45
And what is going on now
    is you are breathing in.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
It can be very pleasant to breathe in.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    And mindfulness tells you
that it is wonderful to breathe in,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    because you are breathing in,
    therefore you are alive.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    You are still there.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
And to be alive is a miracle.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
To get in touch with the wonders of life
  • 3:09 - 3:13
that are available in the here
    and the now is wonderful.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    One in-breath can bring you
a lot of joy and healing.
  • 3:18 - 3:24
And that in-breath should be pleasant
in order for you to enjoy.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
You nourish yourself, you heal yourself
by breathing in like that, breathing out.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
    When you practice walking meditation,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    you stop all the thinking
  • 3:40 - 3:44
and making a step with your left foot
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    you touch Mother Earth.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    It can bring you enlightenment.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
To be alive and to be walking
    on this beautiful planet
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    is a wonder.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    And you are alive.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    You are making one step
    on this beautiful planet,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    touching Mother Earth.
  • 4:08 - 4:12
That can bring you happiness right away.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
You don't have to run into the future
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    in order to get happiness.
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    And while sitting, and eating,
  • 4:30 - 4:36
washing the dishes or making breakfast,
    you practice mindfulness
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    and you enjoy every moment.
  • 4:44 - 4:50
That is why we say that mindfulness
is a source of joy and happiness.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
You don't need to run into the future
  • 4:53 - 4:57
    to look for happiness.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    Mindfulness tells you
    that the Kingdom of God,
  • 5:01 - 5:05
the Pure Land of the Buddha is available
in the here and the now.
  • 5:05 - 5:10
So you can taste every moment
that is given you to live.
  • 5:12 - 5:17
    So if students and teachers
    practice mindfulness,
  • 5:17 - 5:20
they should enjoy their time together.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    You can teach mindfully
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    and enjoy your teaching.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    If you suffer while teaching,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    that is not good practice.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    So as schoolteachers,
  • 5:36 - 5:39
you learn how to teach in such a way
  • 5:39 - 5:42
that there is pleasure in teaching.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    And as students,
    you also practice like that.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
Learning is not to get a Diploma
  • 5:51 - 5:53
in order to have a job later on.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    But the fact of learning,
    the act of learning
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    should bring happiness.
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    So teachers and students
    can sit together
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    and discuss a strategy
  • 6:04 - 6:09
    as how to be happy
    during the class, for both.
  • 6:10 - 6:14
You know that in Plum Village
    we have developed
  • 6:15 - 6:20
the program of Wake up, Global Ethics.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    We have been training
    many school teachers
  • 6:23 - 6:27
    so that they can go
and teach in that way in school.
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    They can help the students
    to enjoy learning
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    and teaching and learning
  • 6:35 - 6:40
    will not be hard labor
    anymore for both sides.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    So inquire about that,
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    specially the monastic brothers
    in Plum Village.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
Thay Phap Dung an so on,
    they are working on this.
  • 6:51 - 6:54
They have given many courses of training
  • 6:54 - 7:00
for school teachers in India, in Bhutan,
in Thailand, in America, in England.
  • 7:01 - 7:04
And there are many school teachers who
    have trained to do that,
  • 7:04 - 7:07
making the class into a family,
  • 7:07 - 7:11
    where is that joy and
    brotherhood and sisterhood
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    so the students
will have a chance to learn
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    and practice with the teacher
  • 7:18 - 7:22
in order to make the work
    of learning and teaching
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    agreeable, pleasant.
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    [connect,
    be inspired, be nourished]
  • 7:33 - 7:39
