    [Connecting with our inner community]
    [Part One: Overview]
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    Greetings dear friends. We want
  • 0:17 - 0:20
to begin a series that is
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    honoring of our nature in
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    the practice of meditation,
    in the practice of stopping,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    and looking deeply. And
  • 0:33 - 0:36
this series is about a unique way
  • 0:36 - 0:39
of looking deeply at our inner life.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
And what I mean by inner life is
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    first that we have society
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    inside of us. We
  • 0:50 - 0:54
refer to this and as our
    land ancestors, our
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    blood ancestors, our spiritual ancestors.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
I like to also say our ecological ancestors and
  • 1:04 - 1:08
millions of ancestors we do not know personally.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Many years ago, I ran across a book written
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    by Joan Halifax called voices
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    of our ancestors,
and in this she was talking
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    about the the power
  • 1:23 - 1:26
of stillness and stopping and slowing
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    down enough
to be able to hear what's inside of
  • 1:29 - 1:33
us because what's inside of us is
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    always on and running. And
  • 1:36 - 1:39
so we're not talking about anything
    that has a entity
  • 1:39 - 1:42
here. We're not talking about anything
    that has an essence here
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    we're talking about
the flow of life within us,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
and part of that flow is:
    we were born already
  • 1:49 - 1:52
with society and it's in our genes,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
and in all that has been transmitted to
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    us since we've been alive.
    Wherever we've been
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    in the world,
    whatever our family situation
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    was like and whatever
    has happened in our lives
  • 2:07 - 2:10
as our lives have unfolded. So
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    this is really to enhance
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    our skillfulness in practicing with
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    ourselves. and some research
  • 2:21 - 2:25
many years ago on a category called
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    self-talk, how often
    we talk to ourselves in
  • 2:28 - 2:33
    the healthy way, and we
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    talked most to ourselves
more than we talk to other people.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
And so it's important to know
    and understand our own dialogue
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    with ourselves,
because it influences how we think,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    and influences how we speak,
    and it influences
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    how we behave. Another way
  • 2:51 - 2:54
to say what this series is about:
    it is about our
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    store consciousness, an
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    important teaching in Buddhism
    and Thay has emphasized
  • 3:02 - 3:05
a lot in his teaching. I want
  • 3:05 - 3:08
to just read a couple of paragraphs
    from the 50
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    verses on unconsciousness.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    Thay's translation. In us
  • 3:16 - 3:20
are infinite varieties of seeds, seeds
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    of Samsara and Nirvana, delusion,
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    Enlightenment, seeds of suffering, and
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    seeds of happiness; seeds
  • 3:30 - 3:34
    of perceptions, names and words;
  • 3:35 - 3:38
seeds that manifest as body and mind, as
  • 3:38 - 3:42
realms of being, stages and worlds, are
  • 3:42 - 3:45
all stored in our consciousness. That
  • 3:45 - 3:47
is why it is called store.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Some seeds are innate,
    handed down by our ancestors,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
some were sown while we were
    still in the womb, others
  • 3:55 - 3:57
were sown when we were children.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
Whether transmitted by family, or friends,
  • 4:02 - 4:06
    or society, or education, all
  • 4:06 - 4:09
of our seeds are by nature both individual
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    and collective. The quality of
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    our life depends
on the quality of the seeds
  • 4:17 - 4:19
that lie deed in our consciousness.
  • 4:21 - 4:26
    So another way to describe
what this series is about is
  • 4:26 - 4:30
just taking a pause and checking in on how
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    we're handling the seeds
    in our conscience.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
I try to do that every week
  • 4:38 - 4:40
and just see what habit patterns,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
what habit energies, what thought patterns
  • 4:44 - 4:47
do I have to practice with as
  • 4:47 - 4:50
life goes on, as I hear the news
  • 4:50 - 4:54
    as I see the news,
as I look in the streets of
  • 4:54 - 4:58
where I live and around the world. What
  • 4:58 - 5:01
happens inside of me? Because I
  • 5:01 - 5:04
think it's important to understand that
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    - which we all have experienced -
    whenever something externally
  • 5:08 - 5:12
    happens to us, something
  • 5:12 - 5:16
internally happens to us also. And
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    learning how to navigate that,
    especially in these
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    times of great pessimism
  • 5:22 - 5:28
    and doubt and fear and
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    concern for our planet
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    and for us all
it's important to be able to
  • 5:35 - 5:39
bring the best of ourselves to
  • 5:40 - 5:44
    our appointment with life
    and our appointment
  • 5:44 - 5:47
with one another. We have no time
  • 5:47 - 5:50
to lose in trying to be perfect.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
We have all the time in the world
    in the present moment
  • 5:54 - 5:57
to practice. So this is about
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    that. Yes, we
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    have a solitary life, but
  • 6:04 - 6:08
our solitary life can never escape the
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    society within. There's
  • 6:11 - 6:14
people who talked for many years about
    going on, going somewhere
  • 6:14 - 6:17
to get away, get away from things
    and discover that things
  • 6:17 - 6:20
were with them when they got there.
  • 6:20 - 6:24
It's the wherever you go there you are, and
  • 6:25 - 6:28
that can be overwhelming. And so learning
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    how to be mindful and
    practicing with whatever
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    seeds are rising in us
because of the stress in the world, or the
  • 6:35 - 6:38
stress in our life, or the
shifts on our planet, all of
  • 6:38 - 6:41
which are interconnected. It is important
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    to pay attention to.
    So there's four stages
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    to the process.
We're going to introduce the verse
  • 6:48 - 6:52
one is a stage of recognizing
    and naming your
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    awareness of your current circle
  • 6:56 - 7:00
of influence inside of you. These
  • 7:00 - 7:03
    can be family, blood
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    ancestors, land ancestors, spiritual
  • 7:07 - 7:11
    ancestors, mentors, friends,
  • 7:11 - 7:15
    and even sometimes strangers. These
  • 7:15 - 7:20
can be human and non-human that
  • 7:20 - 7:25
we can have benefited from an
  • 7:25 - 7:28
    encounter with their presence in
  • 7:28 - 7:32
    our lives. And in everywhere
  • 7:32 - 7:35
I've ever lived, I found a tree that
  • 7:35 - 7:38
could begin to have a relationship with
    no matter what was
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    happening in my life.
    And there I'd be grounding
  • 7:42 - 7:46
the sit down and there I'd lie
    down or stretch back, I'd
  • 7:46 - 7:49
    wrap my arms around [it].
    That grounding that
  • 7:49 - 7:53
    is just there for me,
and I know how to do that
  • 7:53 - 7:57
and so I'm just talking about
    simple things that
  • 7:57 - 8:00
we can do to empower ourselves
    on our spiritual journey.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
So the first stage is naming, getting
  • 8:05 - 8:09
    getting some sense of
    the circle of energies
  • 8:10 - 8:14
in people and beings and teachings that
  • 8:14 - 8:18
are influential in us as individuals,
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    and observing how that
    impacts our nervous system.
  • 8:23 - 8:26
It's very - we already know [that]
    what we think impacts us,
  • 8:28 - 8:32
    what we say impacts us,
    what we hear impacts
  • 8:32 - 8:36
    us, and how we behave
    impacts us as well, inside
  • 8:37 - 8:40
as well as outside. And then
  • 8:40 - 8:43
we will - next session will be
    on the outer dialogue
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    with these energies and
  • 8:47 - 8:51
the way I've been doing it is ask myself:
  • 8:51 - 8:54
"What energy is most been most
  • 8:54 - 8:58
present in me the last 30 days? What
  • 8:58 - 9:01
push toward anything or what pull
  • 9:02 - 9:05
toward anything has been most influential
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    in my pattern of living?"
  • 9:08 - 9:12
And and then the next question is to
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    name that pattern, and then
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    next is to ask yourself:
    "Is that pattern wholesome
  • 9:19 - 9:24
    or unwholesome or mixed?" And
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    what do you need?
  • 9:28 - 9:31
What is the conversation you really
need to have with yourself that's
  • 9:31 - 9:35
    worth your precious time
    and energy, that you can
  • 9:35 - 9:38
give mindful attention to. And we have
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    these conversations with
    ourselves all the time.
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    And that's only natural as
  • 9:44 - 9:48
a part of the human journey
and then we'll look at what are the
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    characteristics and qualities of
  • 9:51 - 9:54
what's been transmitted to us by the seeds
  • 9:54 - 9:58
we've been paying attention to. And
  • 9:58 - 10:01
this is really another way of
    talking about what
  • 10:01 - 10:05
    Thay called "selective watering", right
  • 10:05 - 10:09
    effort, right diligence,
    meaning: what do we
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    pay attention to?
Where do we place our mind? On
  • 10:12 - 10:15
what do we place our mind
  • 10:15 - 10:18
and our heart? And so we will scan
  • 10:18 - 10:22
our circle, maybe pick the top three
  • 10:22 - 10:26
    that have been most present
    in our energy pattern
  • 10:26 - 10:29
over the last 30 days, and then
  • 10:29 - 10:34
that will set us up for
    the next session, which
  • 10:34 - 10:38
is to discern. It's the session
    on discrimination,
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    discrimination in the wise sense.
  • 10:41 - 10:45
    Wise attention to what
  • 10:45 - 10:48
    positive presence do
  • 10:48 - 10:50
you need right now in your life?
  • 10:53 - 10:56
It's like I know I can call on
  • 10:56 - 11:00
the Buddha, I can call for a Thay.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
I can call on Dr, Martin Luther King,
  • 11:02 - 11:06
    I can call on Gandhi.
    I've had concrete experiences
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    with all these people
    in one way or another.
  • 11:10 - 11:13
And Gandhi staying in one of his huts
    and then being in India
  • 11:13 - 11:16
    two years and his energy
    was just about everywhere
  • 11:16 - 11:18
because I was working in villages.
  • 11:19 - 11:22
I made sure I paid attention
    to that. And one
  • 11:22 - 11:25
    of my favorite trips:
    to enter to the Village
  • 11:25 - 11:28
I was on a bicycle, [there] was a statue
  • 11:28 - 11:32
    of Martin Luther King and
a statue of Gandhi side by
  • 11:32 - 11:35
    side. And that - that's
  • 11:35 - 11:38
what I'm talking about. What will keep you
  • 11:38 - 11:42
alive and thriving in this very
  • 11:42 - 11:45
    difficult external time. In
  • 11:45 - 11:50
this very depressing external time. You
  • 11:50 - 11:53
have to find a way which is
  • 11:53 - 11:56
    what for me the practice
    is really important
  • 11:56 - 12:00
right now about, is to find
    the way to touch joy
  • 12:01 - 12:04
and be touched by joy. And so one of the
  • 12:04 - 12:07
ways I look at my own energy,
  • 12:07 - 12:11
    and my own energy patterns,
    and my own inner conversation
  • 12:11 - 12:14
    or dialogue with what might
  • 12:14 - 12:18
    represent that dialogue, is:
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    is it bringing me joy?
  • 12:21 - 12:23
Or is it only bringing me
    judgment?
  • 12:25 - 12:30
    That's an a very important
    distinction because
  • 12:30 - 12:33
    the transformation we require
in the world right now can
  • 12:33 - 12:37
only be sourced from this experience of
  • 12:38 - 12:41
    the wisdom of joy. Joy
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    in the present moment and
    throughout our lives...
  • 12:46 - 12:49
Here together on this planet with
  • 12:49 - 12:52
all these co-beings. And lastly we
  • 12:52 - 12:56
    will... I've
  • 12:56 - 12:58
    been trying to think about
    how to describe this.
  • 12:58 - 13:01
so it doesn't sound like a western model
  • 13:01 - 13:04
of the Knights of the Round Table, but this is your
  • 13:04 - 13:08
inner Sangha. You go through this process
  • 13:08 - 13:11
    and you want to choose
who you want to be on your inner
  • 13:11 - 13:16
    sangha. My
  • 13:16 - 13:19
grandmother is on my inner sangha, my
  • 13:19 - 13:22
mother's on my inner sangha, my father
  • 13:22 - 13:26
is - but not so much - but he's there, and
  • 13:26 - 13:31
    Thay is of course and
    I've mentioned others... one
  • 13:31 - 13:34
of my early teachers in Christianity is
  • 13:34 - 13:37
on - is in my inner sangha.
  • 13:38 - 13:41
And for me, that means I can hear them
  • 13:41 - 13:44
from time to time, things they said
  • 13:44 - 13:47
that I remember. And it becomes
  • 13:47 - 13:51
    what - we call it
    resilience - when a positive
  • 13:51 - 13:54
    memory comes. And
  • 13:54 - 14:00
so if I want to have a
    conversation with Thay,
  • 14:00 - 14:03
or any other teacher or friend,
  • 14:03 - 14:06
or Mentor, I can sit myself down
  • 14:06 - 14:10
    in meditation and in
    five minutes visualize myself
  • 14:10 - 14:13
    with them, in dialogue,
  • 14:13 - 14:18
    in conversation, in silence,
    and experience
  • 14:18 - 14:22
    the nourishment of
    being in touch with positive
  • 14:22 - 14:26
    healing, transformational energy.
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    And so the inner sangha
    is not a committee.
  • 14:31 - 14:35
    It's not permanent. Not like
  • 14:35 - 14:38
nothing - like nothing is permanent. But
  • 14:38 - 14:41
it is a peek into the moment
  • 14:41 - 14:44
of what might be helpful in
  • 14:44 - 14:47
    recognizing your inner life as
  • 14:47 - 14:51
    a living thing, as vital,
    as of importance.
  • 14:51 - 14:55
    Because whatever goes on
    in our inner life spills
  • 14:55 - 14:59
    out into our outer life.
  • 14:59 - 15:00
    Thank you.
