10 English Words You're (probably) Mispronouncing! | Difficult Pronunciation | Common Mistakes
-
0:07 - 0:12Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish and in this
-
0:12 - 0:15lesson, I'm going to share with you 10
-
0:14 - 0:17English words that you're probably
-
0:18 - 0:22mispronouncing! If you are learning to
-
0:23 - 0:25speak English, then pronunciation is
-
0:24 - 0:26probably one of the biggest frustrations
-
0:26 - 0:30that you have right now and these words
-
0:31 - 0:33that I've chosen are difficult because
-
0:33 - 0:37of the combination of letters or sounds
-
0:38 - 0:40in English. Together they can be quite
-
0:40 - 0:44difficult or your eyes can, in fact, play
-
0:44 - 0:46tricks on you because the letters that
-
0:46 - 0:50you see, they don't sound like you think
-
0:51 - 0:54they should and some of these words are
-
0:54 - 0:57even difficult for native English
-
0:57 - 0:59speakers to pronounce! But don't worry
-
0:59 - 1:02about it, don't sweat, we are going to fix
-
1:03 - 1:05these pronunciation problems right here,
-
1:05 - 1:07right now in this lesson! Let's get
-
1:08 - 1:14started! OK the first word is 'vegetable'
-
1:14 - 1:17'vegetable'. Now this word is a challenge
-
1:18 - 1:20because it looks like there should be
-
1:20 - 1:24four syllables in this word. 'Vegetable'.
-
1:24 - 1:26But there's not, there are three
-
1:27 - 1:31syllables, 'vegetable'. Can you see the
-
1:31 - 1:36syllable - that we completely forget the 'e'?
-
1:37 - 1:40'Vegetable'. We don't pronounce that second
-
1:40 - 1:45syllable. 'Vegetable', 'vegetable'.
-
1:46 - 1:47Fantastic!
-
1:48 - 1:49I'm going to the market to get some
-
1:49 - 1:51vegetables for dinner.
-
1:52 - 1:54'Comfortable'. Now
-
1:54 - 1:56this word, just like 'vegetable', has an
-
1:57 - 1:59extra vowel in there that we don't need
-
1:59 - 2:05to pronounce. 'Comfortable', not 'comfortable'
-
2:05 - 2:10or 'comfortable' but
-
2:10 - 2:11'comfort-
-
2:11 - 2:17-able'. 'Comfortable'. You skip that vowel
-
2:18 - 2:22sound. 'Comfortable'. You look very
-
2:22 - 2:24comfortable this afternoon.
-
2:25 - 2:30'Almond'. Now in this word the 'L' is silent.
-
2:31 - 2:36It's not 'almond' or 'almond' it's 'al-
-
2:37 - 2:46-mond', 'almond', 'almond', 'almond'.
-
2:46 - 2:46I'm going to make an
-
2:47 - 2:50almond cake for dessert.
-
2:50 - 2:52Now there are lots of other English words that have a
-
2:53 - 2:56silent letter 'L' in them - words like
-
2:56 - 3:06'salmon', not 'salmon', 'half', not 'half', 'would',
-
3:06 - 3:09'talk', 'walk'. All of these words have a
-
3:10 - 3:12silent 'L' in them, which makes them a
-
3:12 - 3:14little bit tricky to pronounce correctly.
-
3:16 - 3:18I've got a separate video that is all
-
3:19 - 3:22about silent letters in English words
-
3:22 - 3:24and I talk about the letter 'L' and lots
-
3:24 - 3:27of other silent letters in that video.
-
3:27 - 3:30You can check it out up here at the end
-
3:30 - 3:32of this video!
-
3:32 - 3:35OK, what about this one?
-
3:38 - 3:39How many times
-
3:39 - 3:42have you been asked to read a paragraph
-
3:42 - 3:46out aloud in front of the class and
-
3:45 - 3:47you've been reading and then you come
-
3:48 - 3:51across this and you think, 'How on earth
-
3:51 - 3:54am I going to say that?!' Lots of native
-
3:54 - 3:55English speakers actually mess this up
-
3:56 - 3:59as well and they'll pronounce X-cetera
-
4:00 - 4:04or X-cetera and it should be pronounced
-
4:04 - 4:11'et cetera', 'et cetera', 'et cetera'.
-
4:12 - 4:18or 'et cetera', if you're like me. OK this one
-
4:19 - 4:26is especially difficult! 'Clothes', 'clothes',
-
4:25 - 4:28'clothes'. Now the reason why it's
-
4:29 - 4:31especially difficult is because of the
-
4:31 - 4:34two final consonant sounds, the '-th' and
-
4:35 - 4:41the plural sound. Now this noun is of
-
4:41 - 4:45course, always plural. Clothes refers to
-
4:45 - 4:49shirts, shorts, trousers, jumpers, jackets
-
4:50 - 4:53- anything that you wear is your clothes,
-
4:53 - 4:59are your clothes! But 'clothes', 'clothes'
-
5:00 - 5:07not 'cloths', not 'close' and not 'clothes' either!
-
5:10 - 5:11The difficult thing about the
-
5:12 - 5:14pronunciation of this word is the two
-
5:14 - 5:16consonant sounds.
-
5:20 - 5:21together. Both of
-
5:22 - 5:25those sounds are voiced consonant sounds
-
5:25 - 5:28so the sound is made here in your vocal
-
5:28 - 5:28cords.
-
5:33 - 5:34Now the thing to remember
-
5:34 - 5:36that's really important is with that '-th' sound
-
5:37 - 5:40you need to bring your teeth through
-
5:40 - 5:43- your tongue through your teeth! Now the
-
5:44 - 5:49'-th' sound is very, very soft. It is
-
5:49 - 5:52definitely still there, it needs to sound
-
5:51 - 5:55different from the verb 'close'. OK, which
-
5:55 - 5:58doesn't have the '-th' sound. This word has
-
5:58 - 6:04the '-th' sound, 'clothes', 'clothes'. It's very
-
6:05 - 6:08short but it's definitely there! I need
-
6:09 - 6:11to pack my clothes tonight because we
-
6:11 - 6:14leave early in the morning. I need to
-
6:14 - 6:17pack my clothes tonight.
-
6:17 - 6:25'Jewellery', 'jewellery', 'jewellery'.
-
6:25 - 6:28Again, we've got an extra vowel here that we don't need
-
6:29 - 6:33to pronounce. We don't say 'jewellery',
-
6:33 - 6:39'jewellery'. It's just 'jewellery' and actually
-
6:39 - 6:42in American English the spelling is
-
6:42 - 6:44slightly different to the British and
-
6:45 - 6:48the Australian version. And the American
-
6:48 - 6:50version should help you to pronounce
-
6:50 - 6:57this word more correctly. 'Jewelry', 'jewelry',
-
6:56 - 7:01so that's gold, silver, pearls, diamonds,
-
7:01 - 7:05earrings, rings, necklaces - all of these
-
7:05 - 7:08things that we wear to make ourselves
-
7:08 - 7:11look more beautiful! I don't wear a lot
-
7:11 - 7:16of jewellery myself. The only jewellery I
-
7:16 - 7:19wear is this ring and sometimes some earrings.
-
7:21 - 7:25'Architecture', 'architecture'.
-
7:26 - 7:30This one is so often mispronounced! I hear
-
7:30 - 7:33'architecture', 'architecture',
-
7:35 - 7:40- which is incorrect! The '-ch' sound in this word is a
-
7:40 - 7:42sound like in 'cat'.
-
7:43 - 7:47'Architecture', 'architect'.
-
7:49 - 7:50'Architect'.
-
7:52 - 7:54It's not the same '-ch' sound
-
7:54 - 7:56that you hear in words like 'chocolate'
-
7:57 - 8:02and 'cheese', it's a sound and there are
-
8:02 - 8:04quite a few English words that actually
-
8:05 - 8:08have this same pronunciation of the '-ch'
-
8:08 - 8:14combination - words like 'stomach' and 'ache'.
-
8:16 - 8:18The '-ch' in all of these words is
-
8:18 - 8:23pronounced like a sound.
-
8:23 - 8:26My brother is an architect.
-
8:27 - 8:30He went home early because he had a stomach ache.
-
8:32 - 8:35'Enthusiastic', not
-
8:36 - 8:40'enthusiastic' or 'enthusiastic', but
-
8:40 - 8:44'enthusiastic'. You have to work harder to
-
8:45 - 8:48get this one correct! So many of my
-
8:49 - 8:51students say "This one is too hard! I'm
-
8:51 - 8:53just not going to use this word!" and I
-
8:54 - 8:57say "NO, we are going to get it right,
-
8:57 - 9:00right now, together here in this lesson!"
-
9:01 - 9:05'Enthusiastic'. So what you need to do
-
9:05 - 9:09is break down this word. Start with the
-
9:09 - 9:10first syllable,
-
9:14 - 9:14Where is your
-
9:15 - 9:17tongue? What's it doing on that final
-
9:18 - 9:19consonant sound?
-
9:21 - 9:22It's at the top of
-
9:23 - 9:27your mouth and the 'n' sound is made back
-
9:27 - 9:29in the soft palate - it's a nasal sound
-
9:33 - 9:36and to move to the '-th' sound, you need to
-
9:36 - 9:40of course, bring your tongue down and out
-
9:40 - 9:42through your teeth.
-
9:51 - 9:53The tongue must come out through the middle of your
-
9:54 - 9:56teeth! If you don't, you will mispronounce
-
9:57 - 9:59this word and you'll say 'enthusiastic'
-
10:00 - 10:03or 'enthusiastic' instead. You need
-
10:03 - 10:03to say
-
10:14 - 10:16See how I'm breaking that down for you?
-
10:20 - 10:25'Enthusiastic', 'enthusiastic'.
-
10:26 - 10:28Now you're going to be enthusiastic
-
10:28 - 10:30about using that word!
-
10:31 - 10:34'Word', 'world'.
-
10:35 - 10:36and 'work'.
-
10:36 - 10:39Now you're probably mispronouncing
-
10:39 - 10:41these words because you are looking at
-
10:42 - 10:45the '-or' and you're trying to pronounce
-
10:46 - 10:50the vowel sound 'or', like in 'door'.
-
10:50 - 10:54But this is incorrect, the vowel sound is actually
-
10:57 - 11:06as in 'her'. 'Work', 'world', 'word'.
-
11:08 - 11:11This is your eyes playing tricks on you! Your eyes are
-
11:12 - 11:14seeing these words, seeing the letters O
-
11:15 - 11:17and R and they're telling you to
-
11:17 - 11:19pronounce 'or' but, in fact, you should be
-
11:20 - 11:21pronouncing
-
11:22 - 11:23for all of these words!
-
11:23 - 11:32'Word'. 'World. 'Work'.
-
11:33 - 11:38If you pronounce 'or', especially for this last one, 'work', it
-
11:39 - 11:42actually sounds a lot like the English
-
11:42 - 11:44word, 'walk'.
-
11:45 - 11:47'Photograph'. Now perhaps you
-
11:48 - 11:50can pronounce this word correctly,
-
11:51 - 11:54'photograph', but what about all of the
-
11:55 - 11:59other words in this word family?
-
11:59 - 12:05'Photography', 'photographer', 'photographic'.
-
12:06 - 12:08When my students mispronounce these
-
12:09 - 12:11words, it's usually because they are
-
12:12 - 12:15stressing the wrong syllable. English
-
12:15 - 12:17words that have more than one syllable
-
12:18 - 12:22always have one strong stressed syllable.
-
12:22 - 12:24Sometimes there are secondary syllables
-
12:24 - 12:26but there is always one main stressed
-
12:27 - 12:30syllable that is clearer and stronger
-
12:31 - 12:35than the others and the unstressed
-
12:35 - 12:37syllable - the syllable that's not
-
12:38 - 12:41stressed - is often reduced down to a
-
12:41 - 12:43schwa vowel sound.
-
12:43 - 12:47Now the schwa sound is the lazier sound
-
12:47 - 12:48in English.
-
12:50 - 12:51That's the schwa sound,
-
12:54 - 12:56it's the laziest vowel sound in English.
-
12:58 - 13:00And these stress patterns are exactly
-
13:01 - 13:02what is different about the
-
13:02 - 13:05pronunciation of these words, so in the
-
13:06 - 13:11first example, 'photograph', the first
-
13:10 - 13:12syllable is the stressed syllable. You
-
13:13 - 13:16can hear it very clearly, 'photograph'.
-
13:22 - 13:23The second syllable is
-
13:23 - 13:27unstressed and it is reduced down to the
-
13:28 - 13:28schwa sound.
-
13:31 - 13:36'Photograph', 'photograph', it's very short,
-
13:36 - 13:39it's very lazy, it's not very strong at all.
-
13:40 - 13:42Now if you look at the second
-
13:43 - 13:47example, 'photography', you can hear the
-
13:48 - 13:49pronunciation is different and that's
-
13:50 - 13:53because the second syllable is the
-
13:53 - 13:56stressed syllable in this word.
-
13:55 - 13:56'Photography'.
-
14:00 - 14:01'Photography'.
-
14:03 - 14:06Compare it to the first syllable where the schwa
-
14:07 - 14:10sound is - it reduces down to the schwa
-
14:10 - 14:14sound and you just hear 'photography'.
-
14:17 - 14:18'Photographer'.
-
14:22 - 14:23The third example
-
14:23 - 14:26'photographic', the stress is on the third
-
14:27 - 14:30syllable, so you can hear how much
-
14:30 - 14:34influence stress has on this word family.
-
14:35 - 14:36To correctly pronounce all of these
-
14:37 - 14:39words correctly you need to pay
-
14:39 - 14:43attention to the stressed syllable
-
14:44 - 14:46and that's true for a whole range of
-
14:46 - 14:52different word families. 'Economic', 'analyze',
-
14:51 - 14:55'nature, 'politics', all of these words and
-
14:56 - 14:58their word families are influenced by
-
14:59 - 15:01stress in different ways.
-
15:02 - 15:06Well that's my official list of the words that you are
-
15:06 - 15:09probably mispronouncing and I didn't
-
15:10 - 15:13just make that list up, I built that list
-
15:13 - 15:15over years and years of coaching English
-
15:16 - 15:18students to improve their English
-
15:17 - 15:21pronunciation. They're the words that
-
15:22 - 15:26students consistently get wrong! Many
-
15:26 - 15:28different students, many different times,
-
15:28 - 15:30they are the ones that are the most
-
15:30 - 15:32difficult for you to pronounce.
-
15:33 - 15:35I hope that you enjoyed this lesson, if you did
-
15:36 - 15:38make sure you subscribe by clicking the
-
15:39 - 15:41red button here. I mentioned a video
-
15:41 - 15:44about silent letters earlier in this
-
15:44 - 15:47lesson, you can watch it here and you can
-
15:48 - 15:51also watch my imitation lessons right
-
15:50 - 15:53here and those lessons are fantastic for
-
15:53 - 15:55improving your English pronunciation and
-
15:56 - 15:59expression by speaking with a native
-
16:00 - 16:03English speaker. Thanks for watching and
-
16:03 - 16:05I will see you in the next lesson.
-
16:05 - 16:06Bye for now!
